Best manager in English football

Not so much who is the best ever (but feel free to suggest) but what is your criteria?

I can't put Sir Alex at the top cos my criteria would be success against the odds. Plus success is relative.

That's my main criteria..success against the odds

For the record I go with Sir Alf's success at Ipswich

To be fair, man Utd were at the bottom of the old first division when he took over. And it's not just trophies he brought, he transformed a club that had gone stagnant on and off the field. Also, if you look at the years before and after he was there, the difference is clear. Other clubs have tried spending to copy their success, none have managed. So my criteria I suppose is not just winning trophies, but transforming a club to your vision (you could liken it to Dario at Crewe), Having a lasting legacy.

I'd also say cough should be in the mix too.

Sir Alf is a good shout,World Cup winner and First Division winner with an unfashionable club will take some beating.

For number of trophies won,Sir Alex is nailed on but Brian Clough's feat in winning Championships with Derby and Forest plus two European Cups is also an outstanding achievement.

To manage years ago when players thought it a privilege to play football must have been easier than trying to control the over paid players of today,,so for me it's sir Alex by a mile.
But in Busby`s day they were all paid the same, there was no incentive to move clubs like today, nowadays the big clubs just buy up the best players from around the world. I do not disagree that Sir Alex was not the best recent manager, just an entirely different ball game to coin a phrase.

Agreed,in todays game the money available to a manager usually dictates his success at that club.

'Sir' John Rudge for all of the joy he gave me

Without a shadow of a doubt, John Rudge, a true gentleman and an honest, hardworking, loyal manager who never disgraced the game or made hurtful or hateful remarks about his colleagues, compatriots or fans.

One of the few people loved in all parts of Stoke-on-Trent, a knighthood is long overdue.

What form did that joy take (careful)..what specifically..the trophies, the quality of the football, the giant killings, thet getting one over Stoke several times..all of that?

If I was to pick one thing seriously it would be the sheer quality of the football..even if we'd won nothing, if we hadn't beaten Everton and Spurs etc, if we hadn't won at Wembley..the football we played at times was just a joy to behold. We didn't beat Leeds and we didn't beat Arsenal but my greatest memories (possibly the greatest) are of the quality we showed at Elland Road and Highbury and in the replays. To see a vale team compete and play that well....

So if one is choosing the best manager based solely on the criteria 'the joy he gave me' then it's fairynufff to exclude everything else about that manager? Not that I am saying that there is anything else about Mr Rudge,,anything 'untoward'..I'm not aware of anything. I wonder what fans of other clubs would say if they applied that sole criteria..Leeds, Forest, Chelsea..where their (arguable in some cases) most successful managers gave them a lot of joy but there was another 'side' to them? What if Rudgey had been a bit of a git but still did what he did on the pitch? What if that had enabled him to be more successful, won more?

I suppose I'm asking would fans accept their manager being a bit dodgy if he still brought great football and/or success? ideally you get both but what if that 'niceness' meant less success?

Success against odds?? How about winning a European trophy with Aberdeen. Alex is the best manger England and probably the world has seen IMO. It also showed with his last season winning the league with the dross which was in Uniteds squad then totally shown up the next season with Moyes in charge.

Clough took on two ropey second tier clubs and won the League title with both of them. That, to me, is beyond compare.

But Sir John gets my vote! Not only did he achieve great things with our club, he is also a wonderful bloke. I still have a handwritten letter he sent to me when my Mam died. A true gent.
