According to the Portuguese press, we are on the verge of signing Miguel Santos from Benfica on loan.

 

He's a goalkeeper and apparently flew out either yesterday or today to sign a deal

Is this the rumoured new signing from yesterday I wonder. Is alnwick injured or do they need someone who can understand the goalkeeping coach?

Seems a bit odd if true.

 

If it is a done deal then I presume Alnwick's days are numbered.

The lad has been playing for Benfica's B team and is 6/4.

 

It's puzzling. I would have thought a full back and a really good creative player were our priorities.

I have a few theories about this. Perhaps they think that Boot will not benefit from being on the bench and want him to go on loan at a decent standard. If Pickering has a loan deal ready then we have no cover for Alnwick.

 

In that case this could simply be a player to come in and understudy Alnwick while at the same time Benfica (who have millions of players) get one of their youngsters to experience the conditions in a foreign league.

 

I guess the fact that we played Benfica in a closed doors friendly and that NS tweeted afterwards that the "sweetie jar was open" again may lend some credence to this.

 

p.s. Unless this guy can play upfront as well as in goal

You might have a point there, I think boot needs regular games to bring him on.

Need a striker not a goalie.Missed out on Nathan Tyson who at least knows where the goal is.Cant see where the goals will come from as we havnt scored in 3 games and Michael Brown is top scorer. Think Norman must be playing on Premier Manager between signings.

In my opinion which counts for nothing! Alnwick is good goal stopper but the rest of is game as not improved,he does not command is box and stick to is goal line to much,think possible over rated.the little bit of action I've Seen of boot is the complete opposite and would like to see a bit more of him today

No I would imagine if a signing is happening today then it probably won't be him.

 

I guess that's the thing with reproducing rumours from the press - they are rumours because not all of them turn out to happen.
