Bring him home!

That is a very good point. Pope is nailed on for 100% effort and you never lose your ability to head the ball and tom was the best header of a ball I have ever seen play for Port Vale.

we all have a opinion but i think you are forgetting ernie moss in the heading ability.

Or if you are comparing Popes last season for us against AJ's first, identical. I didn't realise it was the Chairman's decision to decide who we want to keep etc, normally a manager does that. He may have been proven right, however, the manner in how he conducted his business in the media (he still spoke to the Sentinel then) was disgusting.

They both spoke to the sentinel, I wished they hadn't but they both chose to.

People came in here laughing when the chairman said he could replace Pope's goals when he left, he did and yet these very critics never owned up to him being right! ;)

What no one has mentioned is that when Tom Pope plays in the true number 9 position he will always sore goals.

Who would argue that he had stayed he would have added many goals with his head that we failed to do last year and ten more goal may well have given us at least 10

more points.

I di however agree that it is doubtful the he would fit into Bruno's plans at this time but I for one would welcome him back if we could get him at the right cost.

I do thing he will go to Northampton with Page and co and some posters who have rubbished him will eat their words when he comes back and score the winner against us!!

Sing him back up if he has his 3 yr contract still paid off by bury he could afford to take the wage drop

Looking at Bury's finances the last thing they are looking to do is pay him off, they are trying to move him on because they have no money and hope someone will take him at no cost to themselves. By all accounts he hasn't done badly for them, although his goal scoring record hasn't been that good.

Like he did for Bury when he didn't get a kick in either game against our **** poor defence?

As people have said, one of the decisions Smurthwaite has got right. Time moves on, his promotion season was unforgettable but it is now 4 years ago, since when he has had a lot of injuries.

I enjoy reading his articles in The Sentinel - it's clear he knows his stuff about football (and a few other sports).

I could see him back one day as youth team coach and that would be good.

He'll always be Vale, and there must be some way that can be used to our benefit.

If it was possible financially Pope would be a good, experienced foil and mentor for the younger forwards here, who are very inexperienced at this level.

I find it amazing reading some of the disparaging comments on here about him. He scored, what, about 70 goals in less than 200 games for us, over a five year period, and has got more league goals than the rest of the entire squad of 30 put together.

Whether he'd be a regular, who knows, but he'd be an asset to the team, of that I'm certain.

I would take him on a squad player's salary. He's still got something to give at this level.

But he proved last year what many of us thought. That despite his wonderful performances and the goal record for the Vale, that the injuries were starting to catch up with him. As stated above Smurf made the right decision not to match Bury's offer, which they are clearly regretting now. If we can do a deal that's positive for the club, then I would be keen.

I'd have him back, lets look at the facts last season... we scored barely any goals aerially last season and had a dreadful record scoring from corners/free kicks into the box... against sides like Bradford who are very physical and anti football Pope would have been ideal to utilise.
