Books about the Vale

What are the best ones?

I used to really enjoy the Jeff Kent ones, particularly the Port Vale Tales and The Port Vale Record ones. Does JK still write books? Some of his earlier books go for a few quid sometimes.

I have a couple of Vale related autobiographies, namely by Denis Dawson (ex Groundsman - RIP) and Ray King (goalkeeper in the famous early 1950s team). Both are really great.

Then there are a few cheapo-ish A-Z style books full of facts that most people already know.

Peter Swan's autobiography has a bit of Vale stuff in it but not enough to warrant a purchase. Then there's the long mooted Rudgie autobiography, if it ever gets published.

Owt else?

Phil Sherwin's book about the 53-54 season is very good.

Ah, is that the Men of Steele one? I just saw that on ebay for £15; is it worth a bid?

There are 2 of the excellent Denis Dawson one, one for £67 and another for a fiver!?

Suppose I should mention Our Glorious Leader's story of the promotion season. There seems to be another one about the Gannon weeks too, the title refers to the bus bust up, I think.

The Sentinel one that was basically a reproduction of articles and old photos from the 50s and 60s was enjoyable. I wish they'd do another. Rudge Years would be good.

There were some ace photos I remember from Rudgie's days. Jan Jansson frying some grass to illustrate the fact he owned a restaurant back in Sweden, players hiding behind the dug-out when we signed Peter Beadle with the inevitable headline 'Watch Out Beadle's About', Rudgie in a sombrero with maracas (for some reason I can't remember) and another with him in his PJs in bed with the Autoglass Trophy on his bedside table.

There's a good one of Rudgie with his 'JR' tracksuit on, wearing a ten gallon hat and smoking a cigar. Then there's the one with the gorilla when McGrath signed a new contract on the pitch. I saw a reproduction of that photo in the Green Un where it was suggested it was Rudgie himself in the gorilla costume.

I have a book called " it's goals that count" by Ronnie Allen. It's from 1955 so about half of it is about Allen's time at vale. As most of you will know he put the penalty past vale in our 53/54 cup semi-final against WBA. He mentions the post bag chock full of ' traitor' letters he had from us after the game. Lucky for him there was no social media back then.
