A very average player. He was average in League Two, and certainly even more average in League One. I don't think he would get in a lot of other sides in L1.

We must have some great players in the team to cover for Yates - we've won half the games he's started and only lost 3 of 10. He's no superstar, but he's a decent squad player at this level. I believe their are 2 problems with Purkiss, firstly he hasn't played to the high standards he's set in the last couple of games and secondly he's got a bit of a hamstring problem. My guess is the 2 are probably related.

He doesn't get in our side when everyone is fit. A more fitting comparison would be asking how many League 1 sides have 2 better right backs than him.

Whilst I agree Wigan's left winger(Wildshutt is it?) was a good player but Yates was pathetic and simply inept. They is no excuse not to even try and tackle or have a go at stopping the cross, which was basically what he did. I'd expect those basics commodities at the very least even if he was up against Cristiano Ronaldo and the bloke then beat him hands down and ripped him to shreads everytime. Not to at least attempt a tackle though was awful!

 

Yates has been a good servant to Vale and a decent squad player but he is a mediocre lower league full back. You only have to see a better player for a few games(Purkiss at the start of this season was very good) to see this and realise his limitations especially at League One level. However 7 or 8 times out of 10 you get away with it because most sides don't have a particular quick(or good) left winger.

Like Wildshutt he was good, had a bit of pace and ran at our defence but I've seen better had we actually got stuck into the bloke he wouldn't have had it so easy. The lack of tackling from Vale generally(not just Yates) on Saturday was appalling!

I'm also in the 1%. I think he is a decent backup player. We obviously don't know what he is paid but I would guess he is a low earner who is no trouble.

A decent full back finds different ways to deal with a winger, like show him onto his weaker foot, stay really close to him or launch him. So no excuse other than ability. However you are all forgetting one thing....he also had Dodds in front of him...not someone id want in the trenches with me when the going got tough.... Defending is a team thing so as average as Yatesy is not sure the rest helped the situation...

No, you are not, but I disagree and so do some others who don't expect world class players for peanuts wages.

 

Yatesy has been a good squad player who has had some good and a couple of bad games this season and is equally as good as many of the defenders in league 1, maybe not the top few clubs but certainly he has contributed and for a player on a modest wage has been an asset.

 

He has also served Vale well over a number of years and deserves credit for that when he does finish playing for us.

He could of had kelly in front of him who doesn't know what a tackle is
