Your favourite Female vocalist...

Some nice memories in this old thread.

Like most people I have a wide variety of tastes and have listened to most of the above at different times in my life.

The question is impossible to answer. There are so many wonderfully gifted singers and many not so gifted but among my own favourites.

Paul's soul/jazz names take some beating. What a great list.

I also liked Barbra Streisand. Listen to The Way We Were without shedding a tear.

I also liked the Seeker's Judy Durham, and Jodi Mitchell.

Maria Callas if you like opera.

I'd agree that Dusty was ahead of Sandie Shaw and Pet Clark but Downtown and Puppet on a String were among my favourites in the mid sixties. Showing my age now.

Shirley Bassey had a great voice and lots of followers thanks to Morecambe and Wise.

Good of someone  to bring up this thread. I'll revisit some of these artists in the next few days. Thank you.

Joan Baez, Kiri te Kanawa, Dusty Springfield - in no particular order.

Always remember watching a documentary of the making of an operatic version of West Side Story with Leonard Bernstein conducting,  Kiri Te Kanawa as Maria and Jose Carreras as Tony. Berstein was infatuated with KirI Te Kanawa, he appeared much less so with the singing of Jose Carreras.

This thread shows there used be far more variety of posters on the site than there is now. Every single thread is dominated by 3 or 4 same people who are experts on every single topic and people wonder where all the old posters went.

FWIW my favourite female vocalist of today is Adele. Unbelievable voice but nothing on the GOAT Dusty Springfield.

In the 70s as a teenager into Heavy Rock  the thought of listening to a Carpenters record was unheard of. Older and wiser Karen Carpenter has a voice like honey. Dusty also iconic and yes Stevie Nicks too, saw Fleetwood Mac last year at Wembley and Sara was spine tingling. Love listening to a cd I have best of Eva Cassidy . All great just depends on  the mood I am in.

I've already confessed my paramour for Candi Staton, but then again in a race around the block Gwen MacRae wouldn't be far behind, who would just be dipping to the line in front of Randy Crawford

As for more 'rawkish' sonnettas, anyone recall Janita [Jenny] Haan?
