I am very familiar with the crash site because I live on the Wirral. It is a road off the M53 leading down to the docks past a Toyota garage and ending in a roundabout. It only has a pavement at the very end near the roundabout. There is a central divide slightly rasied in tarmac along it.

 

The thing is the roundabout is a proper roundabout and there is no way to take it at speed without likelihood of losing control. It maybe that the driver did indeed try to avoid the sting either by mounting the pavement / grass verge or swerving across the central reservation on to the other carriageway. Because it is a dual carriageway it is possible and 18 year old thinks it is ok to drive at 70-80 mph but the speed limit limit is 40 and then 30 near the roundabout. So misjudgement and loss of control in a chase is likely to be the defence if the above action is possible to discount. In which case he will be found guilty of the lesser offence of death by dangerous driving.

 

But this is a heart rendering tragedy in any event. It can't ever be made good.
