New Striker - JJ Hooper

You know this how?

I'm quite sure other players who are now successful have struggled in their first 3 games. Remember he had no pre season behind him and was playing against two very strong sides, and did score in one of the matches. He may not be good enough but how you can come to that conclusion after 3 matches seems very harsh. Surely deserves a chance, probably on loan elsewhere first.

True, there is a chance in wrong, but his awareness and general football brain looked well off the pace for league one.

He's now had a full pre-season behind him and can't get anywhere near the first team. What does that tell you? Maybe dropping down a couple of divisions on loan will be the best thing for him.

He hasn't played 12 for vale. Not even close.

Started 4 and come off the bench 8 times. Something missing in his game and I think he'll only improve by playing competitive games which count. Hopefully he can go to a conference level side and learn how to hold the ball up against some big hairy and scary centre-halves - as there is some basic ability and he is a natural finisher. Don't think Page has quite given up on him yet.

Came of the bench 8 times?! No way surely not?

Fleetwood, Crawley, Sheffield, Bristol, Bradford, Chesterfield, Gillingham, Swindon I think (although might have come off the bench twice against Gillingham) I think.

OK - So he was MOM against Bradford but has no awareness ?

He has a full pre-season? he played something like two to three times... and managed to score twice and deliver an assist... in something like 100 minutes...?

Uche gave what? one goal in 400 minutes...?

IMO, a striker should be assessed based on stats only.

And the best ones in training should be playing on w.e. - period -

Ask the players how they see the strikers in training: you would be amazed..

The real problem RP has with Campion/ Kapend / Enoch version 2014/ Deen-Conteh is that they don't have "pedigrees"...

Enoch, being a national story this summer, just switched from no pedigree to desirable.

RP has admitted himself in the Sentinel he wasn't brave enough to play Enoch last year.

As for Campion, Kapend and Denn-Conteh, it would take RP some courage to throw them into the first team.

And RP and courage.... :razz::razz::razz:

It will be his second chance in the football league :). He scored 20 goals in 29 appearances last season :). Non league gem :). Page looks set to look at some more non league gems. Future looks promising. I do agree about Maynard if we signed him then we would make the playoffs. Anyone who can kick the ball in the back of net is good though :).

He came on as many times as that? Didn't think it was close to that, I agree with your post.

To be fair to the manager, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he'd played Enoch in a losing team last season and he'd failed and the fans had got on his back - would he have a future? Wasn't it wiser for Page to give him a run-out in the summer friendlies to see him in the first-team environment and then give him a go?

That's a contradiction isn't it? At the moment, Campion's stats are one goal in 12 first-team appearances. So, even if he's good in training, if he's assessed on stats only, he's not that great. I don't agree that players should be assessed on "stats only" as stats only tell part of the story and stats, can also be improved over time.

On the outside, it does look a tad unfair on Campion but at least Page is being honest with him - saying in effect "you're not in first-team contention, go out on loan and get yourself into contention" - if Campion is really as good as some believe, then surely clubs will be swarming around him, he'll score half a dozen goals in his first month on loan, come back and score dozens more for Vale.

I'm not being "down" on Campion - I'd love him to succeed but there always seems to be a "grass is greener" view with him - in that despite stats and what the manager says, fans think he's some goal machine. Well, go out on loan and prove it. I'd love him to go somewhere and score lots of goals but until he does, he still has a lot to prove.

He started at Bristol City, and came off the bench twice against Gillingham. Also started against MK Dons, Scunthorpe and Preston.
