why do people start threads and not say what they know?? If it's a huge secret you've been told by your brothers girlfriends sisters aunty and your not allowed say anything cus it will put the deal in jeopardy then why start a thread at all? We get loads of these on here.

From the football detectives and news hounds on OVF it's all cloak and dagger with the mystery striker holed up in nearby Hotel prior to signing and the big reveal.....probably to be actioned after training......Smurf directing said shenanigans from top secret licensed establishment with a stroke of a white cat and permanent ink.....whether any significance can be taken from the accompanying Newcastle Brown and bag of Hoola-Hoops is yet to be seen.

I think the opening post deserves a special award for using the minimum number of words to get his/her message across.

"New striker happening today"

Is it even possible to convey that opinion/fact in less words than was used? I can't see how you can...

new stiker today ?

But I think the words "happening today" makes it sound conclusive - it's going to happen wheras "new striker today?" sound less conclusive - more of a question.

I also apologise for going massively off topic but as someone who writes hundreds of headlines for OVF articles, I'm fascinated by how you can convey a message as succinctly as possible. Sometimes I spend longer over the headline than the article itself, so it's a pet topic of mine...

Someone did that some years ago, asking the students on a journalism course to convey the content of a story, with its attendant impact, in as few words as possible. The winning submission was "POPE ELOPES" (and no, we're not talking about our erstwhile striker)

I once won an "headline of the week" award when I worked on a sports website with "Newcastle chop Souey" (yes, it was many years ago)...
