Alty by tram

Recommended Posts

Just in case anyone might to Altrincham on Saturday by public transport, it's worth bearing in mind that there are engineering works going on in Manchester at the moment and no trams are crossing the city centre due to St. Peter's Square being completely shut.

There are replacement shuttle buses but they're pretty grim and not recommended. Much easier to head across town on foot to Deansgate-Castlefield (this stop used to be called G-Mex until a couple of years ago) and getting the tram from there.

I like Pi but it's a bit on the pricey side. There's a nice place just near to it that sells zillions of different bottled continental beers but again might be a bit pricey/ poncey for some. I can ask my Alty acquaintance...

Does Pi in Altrincham have Tatton blonde on?

Not sure. I haven't been for a couple of months, I'm afraid. What may be worth checking out if you want summat a little different is the market food hall. It's a big covered food/ beer hall adjoining the covered market, just opposite Pi (and opposite the other beer place too). They do beer on a sunday and I think it's open Saturday too.

Alty acquaintance has responded...

"King George is near the ground - decent pub, some home fans might be there, probably not many but no trouble anyway. If you want more quality/expensive beers, there are a couple of decent Belgian bars in town (best is Mort Subite), and at the other end of the spectrum, there's a ubiquitous Wetherspoons. If you're going to the match, I'd appreciate your thoughts - haven't been to a preseason game yet, but seriously worried about this season (especially Griffiths...)."

Apparently the Alty fans have already started getting really fed up with Griff's 'distribution'. (Mort Subite is the Belgian place near the market (past the chippy) I think.)

There's a Pi near me (I imagine they're run by the same people) and it's decent. Expensive craft beer in South Manchester is just par for the course these days.

I think it may be a franchise - send your check to Pieminster and get a box full of tin Duvall plaques for the wall - but may well be wrong. I went to the Chorlton one once and it's pretty identical to the Alty one, even down to the free peanuts. I've not been to South Manchester for ages but have a real hankering for a pint of Beagle Pale every now and then...
