Not getting a contract offer at Cambridge does not necessarily equate to them not wanting to give him one - he might have made it clear that he would not sign whatever and wanted to move on, so no point even making an offer.

He's clearly not the finished article, but let's

(a) wait until he actually signs

(b) wait until we see him play

before we all decide he's no use.

I don't quite get how he's deemed not good enough for a team a league below, but good enough to sign for us, a league higher? This potential signing wouldn't fill me with much encouragement or excitement surely we can do better?! Let's be honest if he was average in League 2 he's not suddenly going to set the world alight in League One

That's exactly the same situation we had when we signed Akpo Sodje. Sodje was 26 years old, playing for a middle-ranking League Two side and he'd only scored eight times in 39 games the previous season. When he signed, the Darlington fans thought we were crazy. But he turned out OK.

There's no guarantee that Elliott will do the same (if it is him) but I would imagine that with better service and quality around him, there is always the chance that he will thrive in the same way Sodje did.

Div 1 and 2 players aren't greatly different in terms of ability, but they do tend to be less rounded players than in the championship with obvious strengths and weaknesses. Successful managers at this level tend to be ones who can see something in a players style of play which is a good fit on how they want their team to play - unless you manage a club like Sheffield United when you can offer the wages to attract just about any player you take a fancy to and sign more rounded footballers. Compared to other clubs at this level we have a massive pitch and particularly defenders and forwards often get found out when we sign them ... as they just aren't mobile enough to play on the playing area. My guess there will be 3 forwards coming in ... although one will probably be competition with Dodds to play just off a target man, and this guy would probably be seen as the alternative centre forward alongside Campion and more as a replacement for Williamson. He's obviously got some potential for Cambridge to pay a fee a few years ago and how much his release is down to injury (and if the injury problems are likely to be ongoing), loss of form or partly the player wants to move back closer to home we don't really know. Some of the doom and gloom and under-whelmed brigade do need to wake up and smell the real world, when was the last time Vale had the resources to go out and sign a player who had scored 15 - 20 goals at the level we are playing in during the previous season ... maybe Hughes and then you probably have to go back to Ron Futcher. Look at the number of 15 - 20 goal strikers we've had since Futcher. Seeing players develop (and sometimes complete duffers like the useless Ville Viljanan and his one goal off his butt) is part of the joy of watching the Vale as opposed to Man Utd.

JJ Hooper would have been at the Newcastle Academy with Remie Streete and in the same Youth Team.....seems to be something of a goal machine.

Kinda think that Keshi Anderson on loan and JJ Hooper would score for fun with a quality midfield of Marshall/Foley/O'Connor/Moore to supply the bullets.....anyway it will be interesting to see who the mystery striker is whether JJ Hooper or Uche Ikpeazu or Thomas Elliot.
