Europa league final

Congratulations to Sevilla who won tonights final with some style.

I do feel that this competition is not an improvement on the old UEFA cup and Cup Winners Cup, with its groups and endless matches and weakened teams, plus it isn't always clear what you have to do to qualify for it.

Many teams way down the scale get to contest qualifying..such as minor teams from Ireland and Wales...the real flaw in this competition is allowing beaten Champions league teams to enter late on...it simply isn't fair on teams that have started the competition from scratch.

I think it is time that instead of offering beaten champions league teams a place..they should allow teams from League 1 and Championship to contest a qualifying knock out early in July and August with similar clubs from Europe like France's Lique 2 and Spain's Seconda division.

In all fairness to your 'weakened' teams comment..I actually think some of the games in the Europa are more entertaining than Champions league...look at Everton's games at Dynamo Kiev and against Wolfsburg as an example

I see West Ham have qualified for next season's Europa League after topping the PL Fair Play table.

They will be one of 104 teams in the first qualifying round, which begins on the 2nd July and must win through four rounds to reach the group stage.

Well, I hope they enjoy it.

Not really what is needed but is it any different from endless friendlies - maybe not.

In reply to Carl, yes both Wolfsberg and Everton provided good entertainment, and only some of the teams fielded weakened sides.

bookworm - I was amazed to read that the early (magnificently titled) Inter Cities Fairs Cup had teams like Birmingham and London entering, presumably these were composite teams made up of the best players.

Then of course there was our own dear Anglo-Italian cup, which should be revived and the first 10 season all previous finalists allowed to enter, and no one else. :)

I think that means Sevilla qualify for the Champions League next season, so there is some incentive not to play a weakened team. It is long haul though if you start from the qualifying rounds, bad enough from Rd 1!

I'd like to see something like the Anglo Italian(or maybe German, Spanish etc?) again. However I can't see it, the price of football is prohibitive enough these days and attendances would be dire. Those in the Football League trophy(JPT) are bad enough!
