Michael Brown Sentinel Article

We're at the business end of the season, results are the most important thing and grinding them out however.

Playing open, cavalier style football from the off would be suicide with the state of our defence. Conceding an early goal would also kill us.

You don't necessarily end a football match in the same way you start it, but you need to set a tone in the early exchanges.

I think sitting back with our defensive would be much worse than an attacking set up.

It's a platform to build confidence.

Sometimes you also have to make sure you don't lose a game before you've had a chance to win it.

Rochdale puts that plan into perspective.

Also.........where is plan B? What happens when the opposition scores in the first few mins? Vale never seem to be able to adapt when plan A goes t its up.

U should never sit back and invite pressure on yourself thats why Rochdale and Scunthorpe kept coming and got there rewards .

Id prefer us go for it folk dont pay watch boring.negative tactics they pay watch midfielders going beyond the forwards and creating.space for our forwards .

(no wonder they dont score).

Terrible way of playing and it will only lead to relegation as Preston will defo just take control.

We need get the first goal and while u at get a second quickly after then.close the game down with negativity if u have the players do that.

Disagree Mr Brown ,play to win.get forward and play in.there half keeping.Garner Gallagher Beckford as far away from.our goal as possible .

Says that the ethos in the last few games has been a deliberate attempt to make us harder to beat by not conceding.

Whilst that may have to be the case tomorrow, and probably won't work, surely it will be a recipe for disaster in the last two games?

Thoughts?

If you don't concede, at least you can't lose!

Buy the DVD of Vale -v-PNE and you will see .........They scored in 11 minutes , we wernt playing well they were all over us, second half Page makes a change and we look livelier. We get a penalty - we score ........ Then we let them attack us and we concede a penalty and get a man sent off ! Vale keep on attacking - double whammy as it raises the spirits of the Vale Fans AND keeps Preston from our penalty area - Kept on attacking - we get a penalty !! We score, We defend beyond the 95th Minute.

We get a point the Vale Fans are Very Happy - the Preston fans are a bit peeved .

If we hadn't attacked we would have got slaughtered but taking the game to them rattled them a bit and gave everyone hope

But if we had attacked them from the beginning with free abandon we would probably have been 3 down by half time. Good football teams are based on a sound defense, its easier to stop goals being scored than to score them. Only one football team in history could guarantee scoring more than the opposition and they played in the World Cup Finals 45 years ago.

Good, well organised teams press from the front right down to the back. We have all to often given the opposition the freedom of the park in their half to be comfortable to build a new attack. By getting the forwards to constantly press the ball often the other team loses possession. It's so simple really.

Unfortunately the likes of Williamson couldn't press a shirt never mind a big defender who has the ball.

Popey showed over the last few minutes exactly what I mean he was constantly in their faces and throwing himself at the ball. This is another reason why he is invaluable to our team. Brown, O'Connor, Marshall and the often maligned Dodds are the same when they are on their game, they show the desire to get the ball from the opposition.

Talking about Marshy if he could hit a decent cross what a player he would be! The only trouble is if he could he wouldn't be with us.

This is the reason why I was such a big critic of JMW. It wasn't for what he did more about what he didn't do. If you doubt me then just think back and how often when the opposition had the ball did he 'bust a gut' to win it back?
