Richie Benaud RIP

Recommended Posts

A comment on his style of TV commentary was don't tell the viewers anything that they can see for themselves..,.others could learn from that. And also that he saw himself as a guest in peoples living rooms when he was broadcasting..a marvellous attitude to the job.

Wonderful to listen to and equally importantly from all I can gather a gentleman and a gentle man.

RIP

What's the feeling in Oz about the state funeral idea, Barry?

Hi Jean,

Next to Bradman, Benaud is an Australian cricket icon and for most, if not all Australian lovers of sport in general and cricket in particular the news of a State Funeral has been warmly received.

Since the early '50s until his illness 2 years ago his life and passion has been cricket both on and off the field. We miss him already.

Our Prime Minister said 'he' was offering a SF, but one thing's for sure there would have been more than a little disquiet had it not been offered.

One comment I'll always remember from Ritchie Benaud was during the 85's Ashes series in England, the Aussies batting last and needing to bat for a long time with the compulsive hooker Andrew Hilditch opening facing Botham who bowled a bouncer which was hooked and caught at long leg. RB commented "Oh dear me, you wouldn't believe it", I'll always remember the exasperation in his voice.

Sometimes we can have too many formal celebrations - a bit like the minute's silence/round of applause which seemed at one time to take place every month - but, thinking about it, I quite like the idea of a state celebration for Richie Benaud.

He gave millions of cricket lovers world wide enormous joy and pleasure over many decades and certainly deserves to be held in high esteem.

He provided me with unlimited hours of cricket enjoyment, far more than anyone connected to royalty or the government.

Good on yer, Richie, and thank you. If the Aussies don't want him we'll have him!

It seems our Prime Minister was shooting from the hip - yet again. The man never learns.

When broadcasting 'he' was offering a State Funeral he did so without checking with the Benaud Family first. Obviously this came a complete surprise to them. The Benaud Family declined the offer saying Richie had specifically asked for a very quiet funeral.
