Poor game in my opinion considering the players on show and all the hype. There were moments of individual quality but both teams gave the ball away time after time, and the amount of players rolling around every few minutes for absolutely no reason was just cringe-worthy. And how does a stadium that holds towards 100,000 people have such a poor atmosphere in such a big game between two rivals? It wasn't any better than what you usually get at Vale Park.

Bale should come back to the EPL where the style suits his game far more, and he won't be in Ronaldo's shadow.

Catalonia beat Spain, that's what matters.

Two very strong teams played each other. They are good at pressing, defending and disrupting as well as attacking - that is why possession changed hands regularly. I thought Neymar was poor in this game going on head down dribbles and wasting a number of scoring chances including an open goal that led to a Real counter attack and equaliser 20 seconds later. Messi was well marked but he still made the first goal and was involved in many build ups to Neymar and Suarez. Ronaldo is not fully fit for me - he seems to be in the same position as Messi in 2014 by continuing to play when he needs a rest and he is limiting what he does and playing in bursts. Bale looks like an outsider and I would expect him to leave in the summer.

The players psychology is interesting. In the tunnel beforehand there were clearly inter team friendships arising from international team links and other relationships. Out on the pitch it was a pretty violent game at time with professional fouling some crude and some more skillfully disguised. The diving is unattractive and I notice the best player Messi does not do it. Suarez certainly does. But there is some logic to this. If the forwards are going to get kicked time and time again - and Neymar suffers from this a lot - then the personal interest is to get the defenders booked as often as possible because that delivers a degree of protection. In fact more than half the outfield players were booked.

It wasn't the best entertaining football game, but technically it was a very high level game and in that context there are no Premier League teams able to play at that level.
