Last seasons fiasco of late signings is reminiscent of the potential of panic buying before next seasons start. I fear our better players may well lurch towards other options leaving us minus certain quality players at our club. I am sure informal agreements may have been made but these are not binding.

While I can understand some people saying - "well, it's the players, they are bound to say that" - I do think it's more complex than perhaps the Vale appreciate.

 

I don't think you can lump all the players together and have a policy of "no contract negotiations till the summer".

 

I can understand that not every player deserves a contract now but equally some players are clearly assets and the club should try and secure them for next season.

 

I would say there are three or four players who the club should be talking to now - in my view that's O'Connor, Veseli and Marshall (and perhaps even Pope - just to see what he would potentially accept).

 

If you add those three or four to the ones already under contract (Dickinson, Campion, Neal, Moore etc) then you've got a decent spine of a team for next season already.

 

Even if you don't and you can't tie the likes of O'Connor down to a contract now, then if you speak to him now and get an answer then at least you would know he's going to leave and be able to plan for that rather than having to do everything (try and negotiate contracts, replace departed players, talk to other players and satisfy the FFP stuff) all in a few weeks of the summer.
