Sadly Bob Newton would have rarely played in this new age of none contact football because he would be busy serving suspensions.

 

Today they prefer snidey type of players who dive and cheat.

 

Newton was a great part of our history.

He certainly was. Probably my first Vale hero.

 

Would love to be able to give him and Moss (and other past greats, such as Andy Jones, Ally Brown, Futch, Beckford, Naylor - doesn't have to be just strikers) a standing ovation on our pitch, as we did for the 93-94 promotion-winning squad during half-time of the Burton 7-1 game.

He got a fantastic reception mate....he walked around the pitch in front of their fans clapping with the others,then just before he got to the Vale end he opened his coat to unveil a white t-shirt with I LOVE VALE written on it,Vale fans were all over him hugging him etc it was superb

Not sure whether the link works (YouTube) but a chesterfield fan recorded the full walk around by Ernie, And Bobby. Bobby approaches the vale fans at about 3 minutes.

Amazing how a player who played just one season for us is remembered with such affection. He got a great reception and was mobbed when he arrived at the away end. Pity our current players didn't show similar passion to Bob.

I dont think its that amazing - He was a player of limited footballing skill BUT and it it a GIANT BUT his heart was enormous, his desire to have all the Vale fans singing his name got his blood pumping, his desire to get goals was second to none. Being a GREAT footballer and being adored by fans is just normal - being an average footballer and being adhored still, after 30 years, shows what the man put into his short time here.

I was fortunate enough to see him play for Harlepools against the Vale and his effect on the Pools fans was just the same.

I'm sure Bob Newton scored the first ever goal I saw at VP, cross from Steve Fox on the right wing and a thumping header Bycars End against Bolton, 1983.... I was 9, so could be wrong here
