Question for REP and other opinions

Recommended Posts

My son is a ref in the Houston area, . There is a huge Hispanic population here, and many of them play Sunday League and some midweek leagues. He tells me that he has been hearing a lot of comments recently regarding the race issue , all of them from Hispanic teams, and all with the same comment "Referee, you're a racist" . If a player says that to you, what would you do? My son sent him off, and was subject to awful abuse when the match ended (2-2 ) The players shout this comment at him, even if it's just a free-kick given against them in mid-field.

What would you do in that situation?

To me if it was persistent and your son had spoken to the player and warned him as to his future conduct and he was subject to the claims again he's done the right thing.

It's only like being continually sworn at or indeed call a cheat.

He needs to do seperate detailed reports for the dismissal and the abuse he suffered at the end of the game to be submitted to the respective FA and indeed report it to his RA if he is a member of one along with including it in his match report to the league or competition body in which he was officiating.

REP , thanks for that. I appreciate the input. It makes it a lot clearer.

Didn't a famous ref (Riley?) say to a player who called him a ******* cheat "You can swear at me as much as you want but don't call me a cheat" and sent the player off for that

Does calling a ref racist constitute insulting him (akin to swearing at him) or calling him a cheat (i.e. he's not being fair cos he's racist)?

That's what I thought Johnny. The assessor told my son after the game that he should have only given him a yellow, but 2 national refs told him the following day that he was right to give a red.

My son refs in Massachusetts where there are many Hispanics, Brazilians, Portugese, Africans etc playing soccer. He's never come across that type of behavior as a ref to my knowledge. If he did I would advise him to warn the player(s) and also talk to the coach about what was said and if it persisted send the player off. I would also advise him to file a report with the league administators and the local referee administrators and have both of them contact the club about the incident.

Another thought, in Mass the referee's association send out senior referee's to monitor the performance of young referee's. At some of the games my son referee'd a guy called Frank Hasek was present who had in the past been on the FIFA referee panel, he was an extremely interesting person to chat with, a Czech expat he was a football guy through and through. If the same exists in Texas it may be worth getting a senior ref to observe at a game involving a problem team.

Lester Shapter was indeed one of my mentors and he along with another ex-football league referee did just that for me and a number of others when they didn't have games, never did let him forget he officiated our 2-0 replay loss to Watford in 88.
