I seem to recollect Foyley was a superb jumper for his size and got to many headers against much taller defenders.

Couldn't agree more and just add positional sense. It seems that most of the goals we've conceded this season are down to defenders 'going missing'.

It's patently obvious what's going wrong.

 

We lack a big, rough, tough centre half who can win the first ball. Neither Duffy nor McGivern are especially known for their aerial ability and both prefer to play sweeper rather than stopper. We need someone who is dominant in the air and more physical than those two.

 

I also think - when defending - we miss someone like Griff, who cleared a lot of balls into the box. The likes of Lines and O'Connor don't do this; they are not that type of player.

 

Steve Davies of Crewe mentioned last weekend that he thought we could not handle their two big forwards - and he was right. He went on to add that by including those two it gave the Crewe team six big lads in total. How many do we have? McGivern, Pope? Who else? We are getting out muscled and out fought when the ball is in the air and it is basic stuff!

 

There was more to it than this I know but basically we lost to BC on Tuesday because they were better than us in both penalty boxes. With more determined and stronger headers of the ball we wouldn't have lost that match, nor the one at Crewe. Our overall play isn't too bad. That's why I think we can get out of this mess because with the addition of perhaps two stronger players there isn't a lot wrong with the squad.

 

I really hope we can strengthen the defence asap. A player in the mould of Clarke or Pierce would suit us fine.

McGivern's height is given as 5' 10" on PVFC website, Duffy at 5' 9", no wonder they were crucified by a 6'6" Bristol City player. I agree with the posters above that it's not all about height but when everything else is similar and if a player gets a jump then height is important.

They're both over 6ft. I wouldn't believe everything you read on websites, especially the 'official' one.

You may be right because page says formations dont matter its 11 v 11 so presumably as long as hes on the pitch Page wont mind where he plays, perhaps he will fancy a roaming role or play in defence in the first half and up front in the second half when we are three nil down.
