England-2014 World Cup.

Recommended Posts

Welbeck has an injury and is doubtful. May have been too dismissive of him as a player for England as he has 8 goals in 20 games.

As harsh as it sounds, this is good news, Welbeck is terrible, and that goal record is deceiving. Him, Johnson and Smalling should be nowhere near the England side.

As with Rooney's, how many of those goals are in tournament football?

In the European Championship in 2012 Welbeck scored one and he has scored 4 more in the World Cup qualifying split 2/2 against Moldova and San Marino. The goal he got in the European Championship was well taken from memory allowing the ball to run through is legs and back heel diverting it in the six yard box in to the far corner. That was against Sweden in a game England won 3-2, so it was important. I don't think he is a good primary striker but up front on the left he has played a lot of games for Man United and before this season they were one of the top teams in Europe. So he is a good player and possibly underestimated, but I would not claim he is anywhere near world class.

I have not checked Rooney. Over the years I have got frustrated with England Managers taking injured star players. In 1986 Robson needed an ambulance but he still went. In 2010 we had our Italian picking Barry in central midfield when he hadn't played for 3 months. As for Rooney there is no way he was fit for the 2012 Euro Championships and it cost us a big chance in one game on the counter attack when he hadn't go the pace to get from the half way line to the box ahead of the defender he should have destroyed. I feel that is the story of Rooney, he has not been fit, now he says he is, we will see.

Goals records are deceiving and penalties are 'lesser' goals?

Surely the whole point of football is scoring goals and winning games, it's why those that can do such things are paid more.

When you get to the WC yoyu need players who will score goals against and help you to beat the best opposition..a bloke who knocks em in against San Marino, the Red Lion and Milton under 13s on a regular basis isn'ty going to be the one to do that.

they are lesser goals cos they are easier to get than against the better oppositon
