Very sad news indeed.

I knew Chris quite well because, in addition to his role as a highly respected Vale reporter, I also taught both his children, Rachel and Robert. Parents evenings were always interesting and a great source of Vale News!

Chris had been ill for some time so I wasn't shocked to hear this news but I was very saddened. A great bloke and a man of integrity. He will be sadly missed.

Very sad news indeed. He never "pulled his punches", was always fair and if you could not get to the game his report was a just reflection of the game and a tribute to his honesty. I seem to recall he was "banned" by the club for a short while because he printed something they did not like. I often thought what his reports and comments would have been on the last days of the "old regime" I am sure they would have made interesting reading.

He will be much missed.

Having played in the PV Social Club football team with Chris from its formation, I have to say what a great chap he was. In addition, his match reporting was always honest and sometimes to his detriment. The present day reporters should learn from his style (Martin Spinks please note). I send my sincere condolences to his lovely wife and family. RIP Chris.

I never met or spoke to Chris, but when you saw his photo in the byline of one of his pieces it always felt like a familar, reassuring face. In the days before the internet, he was 'the' Port Vale reporter for me growing up and a trusted source of Vale news.

I have fond memories of running down to the paper shop as a kid for the Green Un and spending Saturday night pouring over the match reports and the Vale articles/diary. I bet he had some stories he could have told.

RIP Chris. Cheers for all the miles you covered following Vale up and down the country, all the short deadlines and all the copy you dictated down a phone line so we could read about it in the Green Un that same evening.

Nice post Santa. I have some similar memories, he was the Vale reporter through our 'glory days' in the 80s and 90s when I was also growing up and started following Vale. Although I didn't live in Stoke we'd call at my Nan's after the Vale games then on the way home My Dad would stop for petrol and pick up a Green Un from the garage. I actually have a scrap book of Vale cuttings at home from the 92/93 and 93/94 seasons most of which I'd imagine are written by Chris.

RIP Chris!
