The Iphone 5 is 4G ready. But, you have to upgrade your contract to 4G one.

I have been reading up on O2 and they have a refresh contract for upgrades whilst still on a contract, they say they exchange the 5 for a 5c or 5s for a fee as the 5 is not compatible with O2 4G which I don't get

The iPhone 5 works on 4G on EE due to the fact that they were allowed by ofcom to refarm some of their existing frequency to 4G from 3G. All the other networks have to rely on the new spectrum that was bought from the government a few months ago. Even though the iPhone 5 works with EE 4G it does not use all the frequencies they have available as EE also bought new spectrum from the government for 4G. So essentially if wont get as good a 4G signal as say the 5s 5c or the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Now, out of the networks that bought 4G spectrum, Vodafone bought the most, EE was 2nd and O2 was Third, leaving Three with a small chunk as well. Once 4G is completely up and running over the country. Vodafone will be in the best position. They have less customers to share the spectrum with than EE and have bought the most of it (spending £800 million to do so). They also now own Cable and Wireless which means that all the underground part of your mobile phone signal will now be serviced by Vodafone rather than having to rent it from other companies like all the other networks do, meaning they will have as much share as they need there too. Only downside is that Vodafone 4G won't be coming to Stoke either till mid/late next year. However, they now have something called 3G+ which if you buy one of the new handsets like the 5s etc, you get greater 3G speeds automatically while you wait for 4G.
