Watched the final at home on black and white tv. Still got a "1966 World Cup booklet" issued by The Hornet comic or Goal magazine although my World Cup Willy shorts got binned some time ago. Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton were majestic footballers.

I was in Jersey in a big room with a small TV at the other end, the scores were passed down the room, so saw nothing, even worse than a radio commentary. We never dreamt that England would get to the semis never mind the final, so booked holidays away as normal. There is always next time, but I doubt it.

That's interesting..don't hear much about what the expectation was at the time

 

I suppose people knew that we had great players in Charlton and Greaves but what was the expectation, was it really that the semis would be a real success? What were the media saying about our chances?

There was a controversy about Jimmy Greaves not being picked. I was only 9 but I seem to remember more about Pickles finding the cup. Once we had beaten the mighty Portugal we had a brilliant chance. We would have won in 1970 as well if Bonetti hadn't been ****!

What was the attitude of the Welsh to England's win?

I was lucky enough to attend two of the 1966 matches,both involving Portugal who beat Bulgaria 3-0 at Old Trafford in a group game,they then went on to meet North Korea in a quarter-final tie at Goodison Park.

In a classic game in front of almost 52,000 fans,N.Korea went into a 3-0 lead before Portugal came back to win 5-3 with 4 goals from Eusabio.

In the 1970 finals England vs West Germany was the most one sided international I'd seen for 70 minutes, England should have been winning at least 4/5-0 then Beckenbauer's shot and Bonetti's blunder and the rest is history. Replacing Bobby Charlton with Colin Bell didn't help but worse it ushered in an era where midfield players who covered "every blade of grass" was the norm, trouble was all they could do was run, they couldn't pass the ball or score goals at International level.

 

The general opinion was that the 1970 English team were better than the 1966 WC winners. England would have given Brazil a much tougher test in the 1970 final than Italy did, the group match between the two teams was very close.

I think part of the problem is we tend to have great team players playing like individuals instead of great individuals playing like a team.
