It's great to see film of that era, they must have been a tremendous side.

 

An uncle of mine always said Vale were cheated in the semi-final and it gave him a cynical attitude towards the game's administrators for the rest of his life. He thought the FA just didn't want a 3rd Division side in their showpiece final (a MUCH bigger event than it is today as any fan over 30 will know) and were prepared to make sure it didn't happen, even as far as giving West Brom a penalty that blatently wasn't one AND disallowing a perfectly good Vale goal. I always thought he had a touch of the sour grapes until I saw that footage a few years ago and since then I've thought he was right. Something that utterly reinforced that view was watching what happened to Chesterfield when they played Middlesborough in the semis and had a perfectly good goal wiped out. FIFA don't like England either and how can they possibly say none of the four officials could see Lampard's 'goal' was over the line against Germany?

Most matches - the vast majority - are straight and there are also genuine mistakes made by officials but sometimes, Vale in 54 being one example, there are VERY questionable decisions made by officials that have very convenient consequences for the game's administrators and even the big rich clubs.

Tremendous video. I must have heard about the "wrongly given penalty' a million times from my Grandad but I never knew there was video footage of it. The tackle is clearly outside the box and he was right all the time, a "Eureka moment". I can't ever remember hearing about a disallowed goal.
