  1. It would appear the plan fell apart late on deadline day. If there was a plan B it was too late to follow it.
  2. It's pretty clear the manager did have some say and the priority was a centreforward. The problem was we failed to get the deal over the line in the final hours of the window. If we'd signed a decent centreforward I think it would have been a good window. Sadly it seem we failed in the final hour.
  3. Partly depends on what Gayle wants from his next club. If he wants more money he won't be at Vale Park. I've seen him linked to Wednesday and Derby, where he's more likely to get minutes from the bench. He might be looking for a big pay cheques in Saudi or The States for a season. He might just love playing football and want to spend as much time as possible on the pitch. It is odd he still hasn't gone somewhere. I was expecting him to sign for someone within 48 hours of leaving Stoke. Normally players get released with a club already lined up but too late to get the deal done on deadline day.
  4. As the window panned out Gibbo would have been a good signing. However, given the choice of a good centreforward or Gibbo the former was clearly the spot to spend money on. Being optimistic if Moore really did his research before taking the job it's pretty clear we are desperate for a centreforward. That probably means there is some kind of plan to bring someone in which has a reasonable probability of happening. I really can't see him being here to add a relegation to his CV. The obvious one Dwight Gayle who probably had his best season playing under Moore.
  5. Just a moment... WWW.THESTAR.CO.UK They can add any of the contracted players to their list until it's full whenever they want, no questions asked or admin hurdles. Thereafter they need to get approval to make a change. So if a striker gets injured they can add Gregory, a midfielder Jeff Hendrick. If they'd named all 25 players and the wrong ones got injured it's probable they would not get approval for a change. This way they can run with more flexibility. It's a loophole that probably should be closed as it's allowing bigger clubs to horde players and operate with much bigger squads. A lot of teams are doing it. You are only really limited by squad lists outside transfer windows anyway. Wednesday can operate with a squad of 28 players and pretty much have 100% flexibility over who they select for most of each 3/4 month periods outside transfer windows. If they decide they want Gregory on Saturday they just add him to the list and he can play. Unlikely we will ever have a big enough squad to worry about this I'd guess.
  6. I'd think there may be a possibility. Not 100% sure but I think Gayle scored his goals at Albion when Moore was manager.
  7. The squad list and registration are different. The squad list is selected from registered players over 21. Clubs can only select from the squad list; although They can request a change to the squad list in exceptional circumstances. Wednesday probably elected to keep Gregory in case one of their forwards gets an injury.
  8. Moore played Mighton at wingback at Wednesday.
  9. James Wilson can't play as a lone striker; he's neither strong enough to hold the ball up or quick enough to get behind teams. They've got to gamble on a out of contract striker. As we've got no threat the defence is always under pressure not to concede. Any manager will struggle with our current forward options. We really didn't deserve a point. We played quite well for 20 minutes, then they pushed a centrehalf into the space Chislett was using well. Thereafter we never really looked dangerous. A fortunate penalty but he did look to move his body to the flight of the ball, so if it did hit his arm technically correct. At least before Christmas we could keep hold of the ball, now we struggle to do that. Sadly our big players on the sidelines are going to miss too many games. If Garrity, Uch and Clark were likely to be back by the end of the month I think we'd be in with a chance. They won't be.
  10. Not really much quality apart from the cross from Massey. Stevenage have been poor. After the goal we've not really done much.
  11. It's because it's expensive running an unprofitable lower league football team. Sadly for the owners they'll probably not get much of it back, unless they do a Smurthwaite and are ultimately prepared just to close it down and sell the only valuable asset; the land.
  12. Is that the same Paul Robinson who ended up at Birmingham, or the ex England keeper?
  13. I think the manager we are linked with is Karl Robinson; whereas the player who broke Talbot's leg was Paul Robinson.
  14. The only place Derek Adams really failed was Bradford; which makes him part of a very long list. He had 3 very good seasons at Plymouth; followed by one not so good. Always done a remarkable job at Morecambe considering their budget. He nearly pulled off a miracle last season. Before last season I thought he was tactically limited but he did change formations last season with some success. Morecambe also played some attractive football at times second half of last season.
  15. The real problem is we don't score enough goals. If you discount the first day aberration our goals conceded isn't too bad. Last season Harrison 8, Wilson 3 and Taylor 2 goals excluding penalties. This season Wilson 3 goals excluding penalties. Defensively we aren't worse than most teams in the league. Excluding James Plant no player has been played in a position or a formation they haven't played a number of games in. Someone like Massey has played more football at wingback than as a winger. The whole formation thing is a giant red herring. There are teams above us playing a number of formations, for the most part they score more goals. You can analyse every goal scored in league 1 and put 99.9% down to a defensive error. Ours get analysed to death because we don't score many goals. The reason we don't score many goals is our forwards aren't that good. Wilson is capable of odd moments of magic and that's about it.
  16. They used to but most get picked up by academies at a young age, so they don't play traditional schools/ lads and dads football. A lot of academies deliberately play players in different positions. Devine was equally comfortable as a 10 or holding midfield because he's played both. Mighton played a lot of youth football as a forward. Mainly played on the wing for the first team (not exclusively). Played as a wingback at Sheffield Wednesday. Sang has played more football at Cardiff and during loans as a wingback than anywhere else. Too often people look at Wikipedia and decide what a players "specialist " position is but for a lot of younger players it's more fluid. Most young players are used to different formations and positions at academies. 442 only became really dominant in the 70s. 1966 England played 433 and a lot of teams played that way in the early 70s. The 80s was almost exclusively 442 in British football. The top level changed in the 90s and that's now trickled down. Even sides that set up 442 often push a fullback or centrehalf into midfield for times in games and/or one of the strikers spends a lot of time deeper.
  17. He played wingback at Sheffield Wednesday. He's played as a 10, striker and both wings for Forest.
  18. Based on Saturday the only player I'd be worried about is Mighton. They need to find a formation that gets him on the ball as much as possible. We've lost that crisp passing Arblaster/Devine gave us in the deeper midfield role. Sticking him wide on the left Fleetwood managed to stop an service to him for about 20 minutes after it was obvious he was a threat. I'd just give him a free role.
  19. If he's planning to play 3421 with Wilson and Chislett just behind Loft I don't think there's much of a case for Lowe over Sang. If he's planning to go 352 I can see some sense in Lowe in midfield. When Wilson goes off they can take Lowe off at the same time and go 3421 with Mighton and Sang coming on.
  20. Most of the time Thomas was here and fit we only had one, sometimes 2 fit strikers. He certainly couldn't play up front on his own. Crosby has generally started 2 forwards when he's had 3 fit. Wilson has generally sat in an advanced 10 position but allowed to make it more of a front 2 during games. He'll be forced to play when of Wilson or Loft with Mighton just behind now unless we pick up a non contract forward. That will be a problem as I think Wilson is more effective a little deeper and given more freedom.
  21. I think he'll play just off Wilson or Loft. He did play wingback when he was at Sheffield Wednesday.
  22. He did at times. He was good during a couple of cameos from the bench and in some of his starts against weaker teams in the cup. He really struggled in his 2 starts and some of his substitute appearances in the league. I thought we'd signed a diamond after the Fleetwood game but that was probably the highlight of his loan. He certainly had potential but I think he'd have benefited more from a league 2 loan.
  23. I think he'll play just off Wilson or Loft. He did play wingback when he was at Sheffield Wednesday. At Forest he played on the wing or through the middle. No idea where he played in Belgium.
  24. I get your point, although deserve probably isn't the right word. Does a league 1 striker deserve to be paid 4 times a nurse? Our current budget structure certainly means we don't have sufficient funds to compete for good established strikers at league 1 level. It does leave us scrabbling around trying to unearth the new Jones or Sodje. The market for strikers this window has been outrageous with Aaron Pressley attracting a 200k bid after a massive 2 goals so far this season, yet a free transfer in the summer. There are some signs in this window that some of the excess over spending higher up the leagues is moderating. We've also probably seen squad sizes in the top tiers and hoarding of players due to PL2 probably reach saturation. There will be more 22/23 year old leaving bigger clubs each season, getting discarded as they have outgrown their usefulness. That will increase supply at our level. Although they will leave clubs with an over inflated sense of their financial worth as more players enter the market that should help bring wages to a more sustainable level for "normal" league 1 and 2 size clubs. How some young players on 4 or 5k at Chelsea react to 1.5k at Walsall will be interesting.
  25. It's incredibly hard to pass overall judgement after 2 or 3 games. As people have said Devine did little during his first month and was inconsistent for a couple of months after. Arblaster was the one who hit the ground running. People will be disappointed with the failure to land a striker. In terms of having a better squad a lot depends on whether Gore can hit the heights of Arblaster. Weir looked OK when Sang came on against Portsmouth and he go a little more freedom to push forward. He might not hit the heights Devine did in his final month but he was no worse than Devine for the majority of his loan. I think the other 2 are definitely upgrades. What needed to push us forward was a striker. That became desperate last Saturday. If Uche had got injured today I'd probably give it 6 or 7, out of 10. The odds on any loan player doing as well as Arblaster from the off were remote, so edging towards 7. The fact remains Uche did get injured last Saturday. It looks increasingly likely we gambled on pulling off a bit of a coup on deadline day. As with the Maynard deal I suspect that will haunt the club somewhat. If we'd brought the player we were allegedly after from Wednesday I'd have rated it a good window. A good PL2 player probably average. As it is we got nobody. I think very poor is harsh because I think what we recruited is good but it has to be poor as they knew all week that Uche is pretty much done for the season.
