Bell did some good things but 95% of that progress was down to sir John

Not having that. If the current DF situation tells us anything, it's that you can just be responsible for the good stuff. It was a great time for Vale, but Rudge wouldn't have worked without Bell and vice versa.

  2. In terms of a striker signing, more than happy to go with a relative unknown if they match the profile we're after. Stockton, Telford, Maynard we're all expensive mistakes for other clubs and even at PL level, good goal scorers are increasingly rare. We've got to stay calm and trust the decisions being made... so far the quality in the window has been good. It may be that our next 20 goal striker is Dipepa. It's the way more and more clubs will be looking to operate.

We could do a lot worse than taking a punt on Laurent Tolaj from Aldershot.

Scored again tonight which gives him 14 or 15 for the season. Only signed a one year deal in the summer so would likely be available for a reasonable price (although them selling Josh Stokes to Bristol City might make them a harder proposition to buy from at the moment).

Tommy Widdrington connection too. Hated him when he got sent off for nearly snapping JJ at Vale Park. Loved him for us.

I think the big bans are for betting on matches a player could influence,  or was playing in. You could argue that is to support the gambling companies.

I'm sure I read somewhere  that Clark got a limited punishment because he was betting on overseas football. I think it was treated as more of a technical breach; as he probably couldn't influence Real Madrid vs Barcelona.

Maybe Ryan Lowe should start betting on Vale games. He'd get off on the argument that he couldn't influence them!

Given the obscene money pumped into football by gambling companies, it does seem the height of hypocrisy to ban a player for betting, doesn't it?

Exactly. The ads are relentless and the sponsorship is appalling. I love betting, but it's just everywhere. The PL have made it synonymous with the sport. Hypocrisy is the word.

Strangely Tony I regularly watch football. In addition to Vale (ST holder) Leek Town (ST holder), Kidsgrove Athletic, Hanley Town and even Abbey Hulton United I do.

All the above enable me to watch a football match without VAR taking the piss out of the spectators who have turned up to watch a football match.

Only at the Vale do I see the player taking the kick off passing it directly back to the goal keeper.

I have no desire to see other aspects of modern football such as deliberate outright cheating by players to 'win' penalties, get opponents sent off by simulating / exaggerating injury. Etc etc

The fact that a player can commit over 200 betting offences and managing to be back playing the game within 8 months instead of being banned 'sine die' from professional football within the jurisdiction of the FA is an indictment of how low the professional game has sunk.

Modern day football is, in many cases, corrupt and a total embarrassment in educating children. It is the antithesis of the definition of what sport used to stand for.

So my friend I do watch football, but at a level where the match is a sporting occasion to entertain and excite by scoring more goals than the opposition. Back passing to the keeper from the kick off followed by passing across the back line, followed by passing back to the keeper again, does nor meet any of the above criteria of a football match. IMHO.

Tell me, Tony, do you actually watch football or just a sad parody of ... the once beautiful game?

Toney shouldn't have been banned at all in my opinion.

Only really works if Forrest have decided to sell him. Reasonable fee for Uche and a deal with a resale percentage for Taylor. That assumes Forest have decided he is some way off Championship or higher level. If it's just a loan he could just stay where he is.

    That's my thinking too.

According to Alan Nixon us and Exeter are bidding for Jake Young at Bradford. Was prolific in first half of the season on loan at Swindon and looking at a six figure fee for him.

Always thought he looked a tidy player at FGR. Would certainly be a decent statement to sign an in form striker even from L2.

I did say a few games ago. Throw the youngsters on...in the right games and in the right context and managed. Having watched today with interest and using the opportunity to use them, each one gained great experience and each one performed beyond their years. Managed well, could be great for us. Supported by seasoned pros like Garrity, Uche, Smith etc...well done today. Not sold on AC but if he learns from today quickly, then keep going.

Thank God Croz saw your posts. You can keep your back-handed compliment.

  10. I've got a lot of respect for a few Crosby Out Vale fans tonight. @Valiiant @JoeB2 and @Vtid. fair play. We completely disagree on Crosby, but a fair and balanced reflection. I was over positive after Barnsley, because I happen to really like AC (such is football). I think I just want a decent ex-lower-league centre back to get a decent crack at management. And I hope he will.

Going more direct today showed a bit of managerial growth. He had more front-foot players available and flexed it a bit.

Last note from me. I swapped my ticket tonight. Went back to my roots at the back of the Paddock. Best experience ever. Watching just felt right again.

  11. Final thought for tonight. Leadership isn't listening to those who shout loudest and doing what they say. It's making the right decisions for long term success. That might mean not signing big names for big money (Maynard, Stockton etc.). Or choosing to invest in youth. Or backing an inexperienced (and cheap) manager to improve. I hope Carol remembers that and keeps doing an amazing job of turning this club around.
