  1. In the next preview I would like to hear your thoughts on corners and throw ins. I counted at least 5 corners today that hit the first man, and a couple more that went straight to the keeper. How is our delivery so terrible?? And as for the long throw, never mind scoring, we never even win a bloody header off it! I’d like to see the long throw in the bin.

  2. To be honest I don't really care whether it was a penalty or not. Serves em right for all their diving. Also, people always say luck evens out over a season. Well, we've had no penalties given our way despite there being several stonewallers we should've had. They can keep their tears coming.

  3. Good pod as usual. I thought Crosby’s subs were really good actually. The way I see it is we were battering Oldham so he wanted an attacking wing back, hence Edmondson. This was proved a good decision by his assist. Then after going in front, Hussey is far better defensively than Edmondson obviously, so he brought him on to help shut up shop. This was again proved right as Hussey defended very well when coming on. Only one that didn’t work was Harratt, but I thought the other two were very inspired.

  4. Very interested to hear your marks on Crosby today. How he’s decided to continue with this 343 is a joke, been awful for several games yet we persist. And it’s frustrating because we can play so much better. Playing in this system is like we’re voluntarily playing with one leg.

  5. I mostly agreed with Jonny tbf. Only thing I’d disagree on is that I’d keep Stone in if he does well, as I think it’s now his place to lose. But I’m not writing off Covolan after his moment of madness, hopefully he learns from it and doesn’t do it again. He’s clearly the better keeper - only had to see Stone getting caught in no man’s land yesterday and almost getting lobbed.

  6. On that note, I would just like to say to all three of you in general thank you for doing the pod. Really enjoy listening to them all. It’s especially great for me to hear other thoughts on the game, as I don’t have any friends who are vale fans so it’s just me and my dad to discuss games with.

  7. Not gonna lie Stu I’m pretty gutted! Loved the dynamic between you three, thanks for all you’ve done - you’ve provided me with many hours of enjoyment and cheered me up during the hell that was last season. Hope to hear you on the pod again at some point soon, and best of luck with your job.

Yes, deeply unpleasant though I don't think it will unsettle the club. We're on a new path, have a clear way forward and the early signs are that it is beginning to work, especially on the pitch - where it counts. We also have owners who are going to ensure, as far as they can, that we don't have the resource problems that have dogged us in the past.

Sad to say, the person it has the potential to unsettle is Tom himself. On his own admission he is full of anger and hate and refuses to let it go; his dire predictions about our season - even before it's properly started - may prove totally unfounded; and I'm sure some fans will now make a point of not attending his testimonial, which would be a pity, given his service to the club.

This all would have been better left unsaid so that fans could remember Tom in the best possible light.

There’s no way I’m going his testimonial now, especially after all his tweets. Why should I spend my hard earned money for him to spend on fags and beer?

Some of the comments on here are a bit precious.

Also a few fans on a forum having an argument  isn’t the definition of a <ovf censored> storm and vale fans need no excuse to turn on each other anyway.

Pope deserved to lose the captaincy when he got banned because of Twitter, that’s not the image the club wanted to be in the news. The decision to take it off him came from the very top is what I heard from more than one source back when it happened.

I have no issue with any player backing themselves, no one else is going to, being a footballer is about having a strong mental attitude and self belief. I agree with Pope on the issue of Bennett. We were weak as anything when he played up front, his hold up play and his willingness to put himself about was a liability. I felt that the ball was coming straight back with him in the side.

It certainly has caused some upset. It’s turning people against Clarke as some people treat Pope as a God and lap up everything he does.

And yes Pope was better than Bennett, but we played worse with Pope. Bennett didn’t need to hold the ball up, we played 433 and pressed. When Pope came into the team it turned into hoofball.

Probably not wise doing the pod in the first place as it's created a <ovf censored> storm. Turning fans against each other and the management team. Well done ale and the vale.

Not their fault that Pope’s an arse.

No one is perfect. Least of all footballers. I'm firmly in the Pope is in the past camp. Just that I don't think that this is a good stick to beat Pope with.  My point is if he gets sacked for that comment that he may or may not have meant as anti Semitic. To be replaced by  someone putting bonkers stuff out 24/7 on twitter seems a bit odd.

Neither are now, so a bit accademic.

Legge wasn’t putting that stuff out at the time though.

The vociferous vaccine denier and conspiracy theorist? Who isn't any more......

Yes, that irks me. But at the time he was a far better choice as captain. Since then Conlon has emerged as a leader and so has taken the job. Not quite sure what point you’re making?

Askey would want a different captain for any number of valid reasons. Perhaps he did discuss it with Carol beforehand. That part is very believable. Fact is Pope was replaced as captain in October so something was very probably rumbling on before then.

So let's say it's likely that conversation did take place in pre-season. Well clearly Askey made a balls of it because Pope remained as captain for ten weeks into the season before it was taken off him. Askey may well have hoped that by saying "this order comes from the top" would stop any arguement, not counting on Pope storming off and ringing up the chair woman.

We notice a pattern of behaviour people have for dealing with Pope. That is basically "just say something to keep this mad idiot from kicking off and starting a shouting match". I can understand why Askey would tell him it was Carol's decision, but it still is poor on his part as he should stand by his own decisions.

Pope goes on for three hours, saying a lot of things that make himself look bad. Why would he lie about this one incident to make Askey look slightly worse? If he's lying why not make up something that makes Askey look awful or himself really great?

I don’t know why Pope was so shocked to lose the captaincy either. He wasn’t playing enough and he’d disgraced the club on Twitter. His position was untenable imo. Legge was a far better option to be leader of the club.

  14. Finally got the chance to listen to it. Entertaining listen, was nice listening to him talk about his career. Onto more recent matters, he says he’s not bitter but that’s exactly how it seems to me.

He hates Clarke because Clarke didn’t play him above Robinson after saying he’d give him some game time, but who can blame Clarke after our winning run (and Pope’s poor goal scoring record the last couple of seasons). Then saying he was refusing to come on as a sub until Pugh made him, talk about throwing your toys out the pram.

I struggled not to laugh when he complained about Flitcroft not asking him his opinions on players. That’s the sort of old boys club mentality I’m glad we’ve moved away from.

Also, going back to the Askey days, he seems incredibly unprofessional. Slating Bennett complaining how he got benched for him, what a great teammate. And to be honest, although I agree Pope was a better player than Bennett, we played far better as a team in the 433 with Bennett than we did Pope so I was also in favour of Bennett starting. If what he said about Askey is true then that is poor on Askey’s part, but it doesn’t excuse his behaviour initially from being dropped.

It basically all seems to me as though he couldn’t deal with being left out and not being the main man anymore, which is summarised by his sudden dislike of Flitcroft just due to him not asking his opinion on things.

I’ll be forever grateful for what Pope did for Vale and look back fondly on it. But I have lost all respect for the man, especially after his twitter escapades. I fear that this could have undermined the club, as many fans think Pope can do no wrong and may now turn quicker against Clarke than they otherwise would.

P.S. Who refers to themselves in the third person??

I really do think that the Ale and the Vale podcast crew need to take a hard look at what they have produced here. I doubt whether any Stoke or Crewe fan could have undermined the current regime as much as Tom Pope has done and they have provided the platform for him to do it. Why would Darrell Clarke play an unfit Tom Pope who was out of contract and worth nothing to the club in terms of a sell on, over Theo Robinson who he had probably earmarked as surplus but had a year on his contract? I suggest a few on here should now become Congleton Town fans and follow Tom wherever he goes, even into Scrimmies. I personally have nothing but disdain for his undignified vitriol. Are we Vale fans or what?

I agree with your sentiments regarding Pope, however I wouldn’t blame Stu, Jonny or Bezza. It’s Pope who is at fault.

I have seen, heard and been told enough by different people to not trust Clarke at all. But what do I know?

Who’s told you that then? There’s also many others who loved him as a manager, Chris Lines as an example.

Clarke could turn out to be rubbish, but he’s an experienced manager who’s won promotions.

    I don’t think it will.

Especially given the dramatic swing in Popes opinion, from Flickers being someone he thoroughly recommended be brought to the club, to “scumbag”.

And the reason… because they has the audacity to not ask Tom his opinion on the players.

I think it will vindicate Flitcrofts view that  Tom wasn’t someone that would be helpful in the new era… someone who is clinging to the past… someone who wouldn’t embrace the change from “5 pints down the pub and try dead hard” to professionalising the club… someone who has been the king of Burslem and wouldn’t give up his influence easily.

Did he actually complain about not being asked his opinion on players? How ridiculous if so.

He’s a player, not a manager, nor coach, nor anyone involved in recruitment. Why does he think he should be involved in that? I’m glad Flitcroft didn’t because tbh that seems a lot more professional.

I haven’t listened to the podcast so I won’t comment on what Tom Pope has said. Does he mention that he had dragged the club’s name through the mud with his stupidity on social media?  Did he mention that the club spent a fortune on legal fees supporting him during his last social media issue?  Did he mention that he refused to take the advice of those legal people in his response to the case?  He reckons he has the right to free speech - well so do the rest of us and I reckon that it is a shame in view of everything he did on the pitch for the club he is now behaving like a spoilt kid off it.

I have also not listened yet so won’t comment until I have, but his twitter escapades were a disgrace.

I was at university at the time of his anti-Semitic tweets, and my tutor group was aware I was a Vale fan as I used to discuss football with a couple. Two of the people in my tutor group were Jewish, and both of them remarked to me about Pope’s comments. One was a Spurs fan from London, and the other didn’t even watch football - neither were from Stoke. But it made national news. So people who wouldn’t know anything about Vale had heard the rubbish he was spouting on twitter, and I was ashamed to hear them mention it.

Love Tom Pope the player, but after that incident, I’ve really not thought much of him as a person to say the least.
