  1. This Saturday will mark defender Nathan Smith’s 400th appearance for Port Vale FC, but no-one will be surprised if the celebrations are muted. The Valiants could have relegation to League One confirmed at the weekend and naturally any move to mark Smith’s milestone will therefore probably have be downplayed. 2. Alex Iacovitti shows his frustration during Vale’s defeat to Wycombe. Pic by Tom GreenHello and welcome to our Wednesday morning edition of The Valiant for April 17. Vale need something extraordinary to stay up after a 2-1 defeat at home to Wycombe left them on the brink of relegation to League Two. The result sees Vale drop a place to third-from-bottom, a point behind Cheltenham, who have a game in hand, and three behind Burton. That means Vale realistically have to win at Bolton on Saturday, and then at home to Cambridge in their final game, to have any chance of staying up - and even then they would be relying on both Cheltenham and Burton to slip up. They were made to pay for an awful start last night when David Wheeler put the visitors in front after four minutes. Ethan Chislett levelled two minutes into the second half with a 15-yard strike from the right side of the area, but Nigel Lonwijk netted an 86th-minute winner as Vale appealed in vain for offside. Just a bit about us, we’ll be covering the Vale with at least 150 editions a year from the day you sign up, but your subscription also gives you access to all 107 previous editions in our archive. 18. It’s been a well repeated story in recent months but Port Vale’s paucity of striking options leaves them desperately short of options for Tuesday night’s vital game against Wycombe Wanderers. 19. Vale were beaten 4-2 at home to Exeter. Pic by Tom GreenHello and welcome to our Sunday morning edition of The Valiant for April 14. Vale’s League One status is hanging by a thread after an awful second-half performance against Exeter kept them in the relegation zone. Darren Moore’s side were excellent before the break to take a deserved lead through Ethan Chislett’s volley from the edge of the area, on 31 minutes, before doubling their lead with Baylee Dipepa’s low strike, on 40. But Millenic Alli’s deflected goal 12 minutes into the second half caused a Vale wobble which became a collapse as Zak Jules, on 67 minutes, Luke Harris, on 79, and Alli, on 89, wrapped up a 4-2 victory for the visitors. Burton’s 2-1 win at Stevenage completed a grim afternoon for Vale who remain in the final relegation spot, three points behind the Brewers with three games each to play. Vale return to action at home to Wycombe on Tuesday knowing that, realistically, only a win will do.
