Excellent numbers big budget or not we’ve seen where a big budget can sometimes get you in this league

Totally... and we also saw what happened when someone else took over Flitcrofts Mansfield squad.

Big budget or not, they need managing... and does it also show he can control a dressing room full of egos maybe?

PREFACE THIS BY SAYING I'M QUITE SATISFIED WITH FLITCROFT AND HAVE SIGNED UP TO FLITTY'S BLACK AND WHITE ARMY

It's a joke. No one is seriously suggesting it.

Unfair to lambast fans on this. Carol has set criteria, and if her appointment doesn't meet it, then it's hardly the fans' fault for being disappointed, is it? If we can't afford someone in her own criteria, she probably shouldn't have been so explicit.

Step 1 - Carol sets clear expectations on radio and in paper

Step 2 - Fans accept and move forward with clear expectations

Step 3 - Manager doesn't meet expectations as we can't afford it

Step 4 - 'This is the fans' fault for over expecting'.

You couldn't make it up, at times.

This is fair, but we must remember that “success”, as an example, is a fungible concept. Carol never said “the new manger will have 2 promotions and will have never finished lower than 6th”

There are stories doing the rounds that certain members of staff are having more influence than is perhaps appropriate but they may be utter rubbish - as most rumours are at a time like this.

    Agreed. Most rumour are!

I suspect that is part of the problem here - we can't afford someone who ticks them all.

Agreed... but given that context, you seemed disappointed with the idea of Flitcroft. So much so you questioned whether Carol was “pulling the strings”.

Thats a pretty strong reaction is it not? Maybe I read it wrong?

To be fair to Carol, I wouldn't have her job at the moment for all the tea in China.  She will not please everyone and this is the first time she has been faced with making this sort of appointment.  She will, no doubt, have taken soundings from other folk but in the end, the buck stops with her.  That's why I hope whatever appointment she makes turns out to be a roaring success.  She deserves nothing less.

That goes without saying Jacko, everyone would say the same.

Im going to respectfully push for an answer on the success criteria you mentioned... Flitcroft has that doesn’t he?

  6. 5 minutes ago, Joe B said:

His football isn't that bad; was pretty decent in his promotion year with Plymouth. He's had to adapt at Morecambe which is a sign of a good manager.

I love that Carol is so ambitious with this criteria but I think, at heart, Vale fans want wins and promotions, with Adams provides.

Agree with all that, but I’m keen we assess all managers with a level ruler... his “pretty decent” football was at Plymouth who have a very decent budget for league 2.... something levelled against Flitcroft.

Im looking at this purely against the “ticking Carols boxes” requirement. All I’m saying is Adam’s certainly doesn’t tick them all.

  7. Ale and the vale podcast making some interesting on Derek Adam’s’... His football was awful meaning Carols attractive football box isn’t ticked and no one from his teams have gone on to better things meaning the young player development element box isn’t ticked.

Yet some have locked him in as the benchmark of ticking all the boxes.

Either of them may turn out to be excellent appointments but when you look at their records compared with Derek Adams they just don't stand up.  That's what I find a bit disappointing.  There may well be financial issues here - I fully understand that - but I would really like to know who is doing all the interviews and making the decisions.  It looks like Carol has said one thing then something different happens.  I may just be paranoid though - remembering our former owner's approach to managerial appointments!!  "I've been astonished by the quality of the applicants" then we got bloody Bruno!!!

But that “one thing” Carol has said you have called out is “success”... but Flitcroft has that doesn’t he? That’s what’s confused me about your comment.

That's what I mean with my last comment.

I think McGreal/Flitcroft, steady League 2 managers, are probably our limit right now. Which is fine, providing the club progresses and we rebuild the squad.

    Ahhh gotcha

The last time we had success we had appointed a man with 3 promotions under his belt, 500 games largely above League 2, and had managed in the Premier League.

It does feel we're a long, long way off appointing anyone of that nature.

Is there one of those available though? Especially in our price range?

1 promotion is not a proven record of success especially at a team with the biggest budget in the league. My nan would have got them promoted with that kind of budget.

just watched his video that someone’s posted and he sounds like he should managing Sneyd Arms and not Port Vale.

If it is him then what a completely wasted opportunity especially after the points set about Carol earlier in the week on what kind of manager they were looking for

So your criteria of success is 2 or more promotions?

  12. 7 minutes ago, Jacko51 said:

    McGreal???

Your comment was you didn’t see either of them fulfilling the criteria.

Flitcroft has a promotion and a playoff run as manager doesn’t he?

“So it has to be someone with that proven record – and it will be a manager with a proven record of success.”

That’s what Carol said. I don’t actually see that either of these guys matches that description. Bit disappointing. Who is pulling the strings on this appointment?

Are you also saying you don’t think Carol is pulling the strings?

    Interesting comment from you Jacko...

  14. Also Flitcroft has somewhat performed without a big budget... he kept Barnsley up against all odds in his first job in what was called a miracle by the players due to the lack of budget.

He was then sacked in November due a poor start to the following season ... he was replaced by Danny Wilson who also couldn’t save that squad and they were relegated which points to the fact that that squad was doomed and shows what a good job he did. When he first took over. Maybe. I dunno, just looking for positives 😂

Surely promotion and a playoff run can be considered a proven record of success?

Take it this is humour Jacko!!?

Just for the record, I have absolutely no idea whether it will be Flitcroft or Fred Flintstone. Both him and McGreal are far better options than Danny Pugh though, that's for sure.

What happened to 110% and not saying how you know because it “wouldn’t be fair on the bloke” ? ... has someone been put in their box for spilling info they shouldn’t? Or was it all b*llshit in the first place?

What with you definitely knowing and @Vale1995 knowing the players and being sure they don’t know... maybe they just fobbed you off after taking a b*llocking for all the leaks that have left the club recently! Maybe you are not in their circle of people they trust anymore?

Either way there isn’t half some “look at me and my knowledge” rubbish in this site at the moment.

  18. If it is Flitcroft he played 352 for the vast majority of the time at Mansfield, so Crookes will be happy. Interestingly apart from when they played us and he played 433.

At Swindon he played a mix of 4231 and 3412

    at Bury it was 442

    Unless it’s neither then you’re £20 down

All too true... Vissers agent who was very angry on Twitter about his injury is now saying he knows who it is... when the three names of Cowley, McGreal and Flitcroft are mentioned he says it’s one of those 3 but not Cowley.

  20. I love this ... it’s a “who knows the players better” battle!

I AM a gambling man and have £10 on McGreal at 23/1 and £10 on Flitcroft at 4/1 to cover it so either way I’m ok.
