John Askey managed Port Vale for 23 months

A decent man and manager at lower league level. I wish him well. I bet he has a few tales to tell towards the end of his Vale residency. We have moved on, John will too, however, in my opinion, he made a key contribution in what was a period of darkness at Vale. I wonder to this day how we managed to avoid losing league status. Hopefully, those days are gone.

Two underrated players that have shone for me are Dan Jones & Jamie Proctor. Jones is the full monty of a defender fleeting between centre & left back / wing. Proctor’s hold up play is immense, defenders just bounce off him and yet he still has some lovely delicate touches. Wish his volley in the last five minutes had gone in to cap a really good team performance.

Cass, Jones and Proctor are massive leg-ups to this Vale side. All superb today.

Agree re Cass, for me it was a toss up between him and Wozza for motm today.

Agree Conrad. The lad did not put a foot out of place nor pass. Was still running on late into the game. One of the best performances I've seen by a young man in a Vale shirt. Get him signed asap.

  4. We looked solid today. Sign Cass he's class, cultured and assured performance from him. Jones too was immense.

Need to perhaps be alittle more dynamic in attack, we do lack pace also but I'm sure Clarke will eventually play Amoo and/ or Politic to supplement Wozza's industry and desire. Keep it quiet but we may just be getting there.

  5. I guess the jury is out on Clarke and the new team. I've only seen 2 games Tranmere and Rochdale. In both we had spells and looked great but seemed to lack ideas and yesterday in particular basic defending and closing down players. Could and should have been 2 up, which is worrying in itself.

Stand out players from my first game were Legge, Worrall, Smith and Jones. Yesterday proctor, Worrall and Conlon. We lack a playmaker and are too dependent on Conlon. Proctor was great yesterday. Wilson has a lot to do imo. Football is a relatively simple game, it is players that win games aided by tactics. over complicating things and trying to be 'clever' rarely works at this level.

Why no Amoo, Politic, we had no left sided threat virtually all game?

The bottom line is that there has been major change and investment in both the playing and backroom staff.

Expectations are high and should be. It is time to step up I'm afraid.

    I'll reserve judgement.....for now.

You must have spent the entire 90 minutes at that game counting fans emoji16.png

Didn't need to count them individually you get a 'feel' for attendences after 40 years. However, there were parts of the game where I couldhave done chief!

They counted 5 bar gates but more walked in. Luckily nobody fell over or it could have been nasty

Thought it was an awful situation, something that could have been managed a hell off a lot better given the climate or at any time tbh. Clowns on Radio Stoke saying stop moaning! Ridiculous situation that should have been managed from 2.15pm onwards. No or little stewarding of crowd, no tannoy announcement or anyone addressing the crowd. If people don't flag up this kind of situation how can things improve and be acted upon. I have actually seen £21 K in Vale park, although the gate was listed at £14K! Not moaning merely giving out facts as I'm sure are well and truly documented for action for the future.

Yes, he would! He was exciting...raw, but exciting and I've never seen one of our players fouled so often by so many different opponents. It's a crying shame we couldn't develop him on...he could have had a great career!

Enoch Ando was a brilliant little player. You could see that someone was going to hurt him, he needed protection from the referee's. I believe a move to Spurs was on the horizon. Just shows how cruel the game can be.

Joe, I agree with your point on Burgess. I thought that the 2019/2020 season him and Taylor complemented each other and it was a decent partnership. That’s why I was disappointed that Taylor went off to Scunthorpe at the beginning of last season.

Totally agree that both Burgess and Taylor were superb last term, a real bonus. What on earth has happened to the pair of them? The amount of quality work (and running) they did was epitomised at the Etihad, I do hope Clarke has a keeper in mind? brown in my opinion would have done a job, perhaps bring in a younger guy to share the workload?

Maybe invite John Stones as a guest player ,  as long as Jonathan Wilkes doesn't turn up I'll be there

They used to say that Pele used to turn up even for the "openining of an envelope" same can be said of Jonny Wilkes! However the boy could play....

Some deserve to lose their jobs. I’m sad for the likes of pope, Monty, brown, brisley and Joyce who always gave their best but players like mckirdy have leached off the club for long enough.

Some served us well particularly Brown and Joyce. Monty can play but has fitness issues. Pope a Vale legend.

I wish them well. I have a soft spot for Adam Crookes, the lad has ability.

I never doubted that. Pope has managed local sides, is involved in the media, he may have decided to do his coaching badges, he may just want to leave the game behind altogether. I personally don't think he will and know he is "Vale" and always will be, so am I.

People seem quick to dismiss people like Tom, he may be finished as a player, he may not, truth is we don't know and don't see the goings on within the club. He did have issues with Askey, and...

Whatever the future holds for Tom, I wish him well.

He’s had the recognition of being a club legend but that Doesn’t just automatically warrant giving him a new deal when he is no longer at the right level. It be a massive backwards step for us to give him a 2 year deal now. He’s past his best, would be 4th choice and commands a high wage. I wouldn’t mind him staying for 1 season with a reduce in wage (and a coach?) but I can’t see that happening and he will have offers from non league for 2 years. Clarke wants players who are ‘fit’ and have football ‘lifestyles’ not sometime popey really has.

Look, he’s been a legend and he’s been brilliant for this club. Everyone knows that but there comes a time where it’s best for all to move on and this is that time.

I know, I'm a sentimental fool but in all honesty blokes like Tom will be "Vale" long after "Dazzler" has gone. I'd love a one year deal for him, reduced terms but get him on the staff. Another league 2 or national League team will offer him something for sure though. Here's to the future - I said that last year!!! Like I keep saying:- It's VALE - expect the unexpected!! UTV

I agree with that and yes he has scored some very important goals for us BUT sadly for me his time has now come to move on,i do however hope that he returns to club in some capacity in the future

Well said, agree. Lost a lot of fitness and sharpness, could put the grat in for another "Go" maybe one season.

He will know himself. Love to see him back at Vale. Remember he has been there much longer and witnessed many more highs and lows than our new gaffer and stood the test of time. deserves reward and recognition for his efforts big-time. "Feed the Pope and he WILL score""!!!

His after match interview today, Best ever. So listenable. I am sure he will be my best ever Vale manager if he is in charge for a few seasons.

If he achieves a fifth of John Rudge he will have been a success. Micky Adams also left a legacy. I hope he does become the best ever Vale manager!!! He certainly talks a good game in that respect!! UTV

Nah, according to some on here Pope had one good season, back in 2012/13.

(incredible really that he managed to break various records for the club, by just having that one good season!)

We'd have been in non league 5 years ago without Tom!!

IMO I thought he was referring to Pope as not having the correct life style, we all know he likes a few sherbets.

Regardless, have people got short memories with Tom? Been head and shoulders our best player for 9 years.

Clarke should treat him with the respect he deserves even if letting him go. Tom will tell him anyway.

Great interview from 'dazzler' perhaps his anger got the better of him as some things could and should stay behind closed doors.

Remember in football "You are only as good as your last game"

Time will tell.....It's VALE - expect the unexpected!!
