  1. Here is my reply from the EFL: Hello Jean, Thank you for your email. The Manager of the Month is shortlisted by experts in the industry and a judging panel will then decide on the eventual winner. The panel take into account various different things - though results play a strong part, there needs to be consideration of the wider context of performance and other factors taken into account, otherwise there would be no need for a panel or a shortlist and it would just be given straight to the manager of the team with the highest number of accrued points. 3. To be fair to Clarke his budget will be largely unchanged so he isn't going shopping at Harrods. He's trying to bring in better players on the same money. The question should be is he the wheeling dealing genius he claims to be. He signed a whole new squad at Bristol Rovers BUT they would have had a massive budget compared to many teams when they dropped out of the league. He failed to do it at Walsall where his budget would have been ok for this league. Similarly he did get an improvement from our current squad. How much of that was down to being able to get our best 11 out for 7

  4. Bar Brown, I don't know which players people are so worried about replacing. Pope was, at most, a back up striker. Joyce was likely to face competition if he stayed. Montano would have been a utility left-sided player and many advocated for a specialist left back. Brisley is the third best centre-back at the club. We're talking about one regular starter and 4 squad players next season. The rest of the retained list weren't even decisions. No brainers. Brown will be a challenge, but bar that, we still needed mass improvement of the first 11. Nothing's changed there. If we'd retai

  5. If you think of a player's career being about 10 seasons Pope qualifies as a legend and probably our greatest player over the last 10 years. If you are looking at the best forwards of the last 50 years I don't think he was as good as Jones, Beckford, Aly Brown, Futcher, Slaven, Mills, Foyle, Naylor, McPhee, Brooker or Sodje. Really this list shows how much quality we had from the mid 80s through to the mid noughties. Pope is better than anything from the 70s and the last 10 years. If he'd had the players around him the 11 guys ahead of him on my list had maybe he would have been eve

  7. Don't really get the 'really loyal servants'. They've been very well remunerated at a good club with fantastic owners to achieve a target (top 7, which they failed). They were employees who did what was stated in their contract to a good-decent standard. Pope is the only player I'd label a servant. Brown, Joyce, Monty, a few others definitely didn't down tools, and they are welcome in Burslem anytime, but its hard to remember Mansfield away, Tranmere away, the humiliation against Kings Lynn, getting rinsed by Stoke fans daily, and fans of 50 years+ admitting to anxiety and sleepless night

  8. He's been a superb player absolutely no doubt, legend yes . Greatest striker ? You never saw Martin Foyle or Tony Naylor then playing two divisions higher ?

  9. I think that's another load of nonsense. He's never taken any credit, always passes it on to the players. And what blame has he directed on to others? Your vendetta against Clarke, who saved us from non-league oblivion, is bizarre.

Owd Sage Weve lost some great valiants and true friends, too many. Cant wait to get back to Vale Park and give an extra loud cheer for all our missing fans. They will all be there cheering on the Vale. Lets make em proud when we get behind the lads in black n white. UTV

  13. The promotion season was when Tom Pope was the man. His finishing that season was unbelievable and he scored some wonderful goals. A lot of other fans associate Pope with a target man who will get on the end of crosses but that season when I look back at the pictures he looked very fit and slim (than now) and he was very sharp in the penalty box. Age caught up with him like all of us. He’s a very good footballer. His touch is very good and he’s a clever player. He linked up play so often with clever passes. Like mentioned above, I’d have liked to see him in the side we had with guppy and McCar

  14. Sadly potentially, judging off our last two performances, I think he’s lost the dressing room, with nobody to lead the line next season, i cant see where the goals are going to come from, i fear the end of season form may have been a temporary bounce.

  15. This could all go very wrong, but I'm just excited that is has been recognised that this club has been stuck in the late 90s for decades, and bar a miraculous 12/13 season, we've had basically nothing to get excited about. We've been a fairly rubbish club to support for over 20 years so I'm happy to gamble here. It's better than more of the same, which was wearing very, very thin.

  16. What a complete load of rubbish. It is a retained list. We have just had another awful season of course the majority were going to be released. I wouldn’t go on the internet today if I was you as more will be leaving. It’s called rebuilding, something that has needed to be done for years. Of course it’s the best thing for port vale we have been desperate for a clear out for some time !! Also watch his interviews he hasn’t taken any credit for wins he has always put that praise onto the players. I get you don’t like him (no idea why) but it’s getting embarrassing now.

  19. I'd love to hijack some contract renewal negotiations at Crewe. Don't even want the players, just pressure the tramp in having to concede higher wages because Flitters sent Wintle and Porter's agents a cheeky contract offer on whatsapp. Banter.

  20. So that's it then: 21 players gone or going...15 out of contract, 2 loan players, Oyeleke transferred, and 3 on the list. Plus a senior coach. Some going! This has been a long time coming and much needed, sweeping away the dross and providing the basis for a complete new build. No longer Port Vale the soft touch where sentiment rules OK...these guys mean business. Next, and much anticipated, announcing our new players...the future is bright 🙂

  21. Put as simply as I can: DoF is a long term role who sets the direction of all things football at the club, from Youth team, to First team... having the same philosophy, tactics, strategy etc DoF is in charge of a large number of people including all the scouts, coaches, physios, data analysts, scouts, youth team manager and importantly first team manager. So if First team manager gets things wrong... DoF is the one who holds him to account. First team manager is HOPEFULLY a long term appointment, but the world of football moves quickly... lets look at the positive side... i

  22. For reference, our last promotion squad had 4 strikers who scored 50 between them. Pope 31 Hughes 10 Williamson 8 Andrew 1 With 26 more from midfield JMW 9 Dodds 7 Vincent 7 Morsy 2 Loft 1 This season just gone we got 21 out of 6 strikers and 23 out of midfield. Says it all really.

  26. Absolutely agree. Tin Man and Naylor were top drawer footballers who could and should have played in the top tier. Pope is a league 2 striker, a good one yes, but never really proven in league 1 even. For that reason, as a footballer I don’t think he was even at a level of a Constantine or McPhee. A vale legend given his service but in terms of greatness as a player...harder to say.

  28. Dear me, you never know we might not. It's not unusual for clubs at this level to transform their squads over the summer. Look at Bolton. At least the management team are trying, from Carol downwards they are prepared to take a risk to get a reward. I think its fantastically brave and shows a lot of faith and confidence especially given how it went when Bruno assembled a curious squad a few years ago. There is a lot of dross out there, but there are also some gems. Conlon is a prime example. I am more optimistic than I have been in years. Will we be romp it to promotion next season,

  31. Christ, no-one <ovf censored> "downed tools". Get a grip and have a bit of respect. Some of these players have been really loyal servants to the club and their careers may be over. I'd imagine some will be devestated and this jubilance and shitposting comes across as pretty nasty.

  32. I'd much rather the running of the football side was left to the football people. Our previous owner had quite a large input on who we signed and look where that got us.

  33. People on social media do amaze me. Seen some people basically saying we should’ve kept Pope just for sentimental reasons and to give him a chance to say bye to the fans. But then these same people will moan about not getting promotion because we’ve pissed a wage up the wall on a striker who isn’t good enough for the first team. Let’s not forget, Pope left us years ago for the money at Bury. Which is fair enough, it’s his job. But then why do some people expect the club to keep paying him for another year when he’s past it. He can’t have it both ways.

  37. My favourite part of the summer is where a player's quality is judged using the criteria of 'do I recognise him?'. This criteria results in players with memorable names being deemed 'good', and players with generic names being deemed 'bad'. Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro would be labelled a decent signing, I am convinced, despite turning out for Radcliffe this season.

  38. Players from mid-table L2 teams aren't necessarily mid-table L2 players. We're mid-table L2, but Smith, Gibbo, Conlon, Woz and Rodney are top-end for L2 (and could do a job in L1). The trick is bringing in those kind of players from other mid-table L2 sides (Benning, Clarke, the 19/20 version of Gordon and a few others mentioned here would fit that bill), alongside a few others (L1 releases, a couple of young chancers) to replace those we released, who genuinely were mid-table L2 (or worse in several cases).

  42. Pretty sure Messrs Foyle, Naylor, Beckford, Jones and Kirkham, to name but a few, would have something to say about that statement! Can't dispute he's a Vale legend in terms of goals, but do you really believe that if he'd been playing in the 90s and early 2000s, he would have been anywhere near the Vale first team?!

  43. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this is just pointlessly negative. "Talk talk and no knickers"? Clarke took over a sinking ship in Bristol Rovers in March 2014, over the summer canned 13 players, rebuilt and got them back into League 2. The following season he did it again and got promoted into League 1. Must have been dumb luck and lots of shouting though, eh?

  48. Would be a good curtain raiser for the new season. Restrictions lifted, sunny day, feel-good atmosphere for our first proper return to VP with a few recent heroes on show. Pubs and club shop would make a mint, new shirts will be sold out, get some deals going for 10 game tickets etc. Would give the fans the opportunity to properly send off Tom and generate the buzz.

  49. I am being genuinely serious here, because I want to understand. Can you articulate exactly what you don't like about Clarke? It can't be his managerial ability as he won 8 and drew 1 with a team that had won 3 in 23, going from one of the worst defences to one of the most formidable, with 4 promotions under his belt. Is it a personal thing? I find him a tad abrasive at times too but have reconciled to the fact that I can't moralise anymore; we need wins and promotion, at any cost. Seriously; you're in every thread making snarky comments, refusing to ever praise him. I'm tr

  50. Flitcroft impressed the fans with a lot of convincing talk when he arrived. The next 2-3 weeks will define him. He's got a good amount of money and squad space to work with, and the freedom + control to shape it. He, as it was suggested by Clarke, should have been working on this and now it's a case of hitting 'Go' on the best players that have been identified. Clarke knew Saturday evening (and probably weeks ago) that everyone was going. In an ideal world, Flitters has a Top 5 Targets for each gap in the squad, identified through data, watching in person/video, character reviews, co
