  1. Can we ignore the pre season card please. Had that been a League game we would have appealed it and it would have undoubtedly have been rescinded because it was nowhere near a red card. Just look at the reaction of the home fans next to the incident. And we won the game anyway!!! He played two whole seasons at Torquay and never got a card of any colour. Yes he was daft yesterday but so was Conlon against Walsall, so was Jones against Newport. So was Leon a couple of seasons ago when he was sent off twice. He’ll serve his four game suspension and then have to fight to get his place back but all this reaction about sacking him is in my opinion over the top.

  2. I don’t think that’s what people are trying to argue. The game continued at the same trajectory after the sending off. The sending off robbed us of the chance to regroup during the half time break and make tactical changes and/or subs. If we go in at half time level and with 11 players then we have a chance. If we’d won 2-1 with a storming second half performance yesterday then very few people would be talking about our failure to get to grips with Swindon during the first 45.

  3. The sending off has been seen as the turning point of the game, but reality is that we weren’t good for the 45 minutes before that and his stupid decision made sure we had no route back in to the game. Trouble is that Covolan looks like a player who can’t help himself but get involved in some way. The Northampton manager highlighted that after the first game of the season and they targeted that. Maybe Swindon did too? Making sure they pressed him whenever he was going to get the ball? Hindsight is great isn’t it. Should we have started 3 new signings? Did that upset the way we would usually play with Wilson back in the side? Should Stone have retained his place after the Brentford game? Should we have started 3-5-2? Everyone was looking forward to seeing the new signings and also Wilson back in the team. However what stood out to me was that we did not play our usual way, we did not play our usual style where we use Wilson, a midfielder and the wingbacks in little triangles to get us in to the box. Instead we looked to have changed the attacking side of the game by just banging crosses in. Who to though? We haven’t played that way all season and we don’t have a big lump of centre forward who’s good in the air to get on the end of them (like a Pope style player). We also had no press either and let them have lots of the ball and lots of space. When we beat them away we pressed them at the back and won the ball back off them. I don’t think we look good when we sit back. This is why I said in the new signings thread that we need to be careful about the players we bring in and how we integrate those into the side. How would it affect affect the dynamic? It might be harsh to judge the side on just the opening 45 but to me any new player that started yesterday had to improve us immediately and be better than whoever they replaced. I thought that was true of Harratt, he looked lively and scored a great goal and he is a good foil to Wilson in that he’ll chase and harry and make a nuisance of himself. However there will be games where we need a Proctor style forward alongside Wilson, but if that’s the case than Harratt would be a great sub to bring on. Hall had a decent game I thought, nicked the ball when he could, used it well and did well in the air. I think it’s harsh to blame him for the third, Mckirdey had no right to score that and he got a huge slice of luck for it to end up in the net being forced so wide. But overall I liked what I saw of him. Hussey didn’t add anything that was better than Gibbo, as other posters have said we miss a player like that with his tenacity, fire and ability to carry the ball that can drive a team on or lift a crowd, it can’t be understated how important a player like that is. Is Hussey the type of wing back who will drive at the opposition or get behind or be more explosive like Gibbo is or is he more of a steady player that’s more defensive? I know he has a great left foot, so are we changing how we play (putting crosses in from anywhere) to suit him coming in? The big talking point is why drop someone who’s been playing so well? Personally I wouldn’t have started 3 new signings in case it affected how we play and I would have stuck with Stone too. But as I said earlier the glaring thing to me was our patterns of play that we played earlier in the season were non existent, without that we have nothing in an attacking sense and just hoofing balls into the box was not going to work given the players we have. Where were the cut backs and the players working angles for midfield runners or strikers that have dropped off? That was our hallmark when we were playing well. Maybe Swindon had a part to play in stopping that, maybe we need to look at a formation change? Another factor is that I think we need another option in midfield too that would freshen the current 3 players up because when Pett and Garrity aren’t in the game then we suffer. There’s no doubt we were second best from the first whistle and the Harratt goal papered over the cracks. It’s good that Clarke recognised that and said that he was going to make formation changes and that he may have made a mistake, buts it’s a moot point because Covolan killed any chance of that happening. When the wing backs aren’t in the game then we don’t always need to change them, we may need to get hold of it better in midfield and keep the ball or just tweak how we play to pushing players forward 20 yards or encourage them to press their space. The bald lad for them ran the whole game and the space he had was embarrassing at times. Overall it was a really bad day at the office, Clarke got it wrong IMO and was let down by the keeper so it hamstrung us. But I think yesterday gave us more questions than answers. Formation. Our style of play. Key players in key positions. We need to very careful that we don’t stray too far from what got us into the top 3.

  4. I can't see how you can't see its not a foul! This is how he catches it. Normal. One knee up, feet facing the ground. Ball is in his hands. Job done. Drop down like that and restart play. This is what happens next - his right knee out like a kung fu kick, right angle to his body, studs towards McKirdy. Screenshots don't do justice just how moronic it is. He catches the ball and then decides he's going to stud McKirdy in the stomach. Why on earth would he do that? He's got the ball! Drop down straight! It's not a natural/understandable position however we try and interpret it. There is no reason to have his legs like that. The more I watch it the more I think it's a moment of sheer madness where he decides to leave one on McKirdy. If you watch the video you see his leg fly, unnaturally, into McKirdy. Stupid and very dirty. Hate to be one of the screenshot lads but its a disgraceful challenge. Would be angry if we were 3-0 up in the 90th minute. People will know I've backed Lucas to the hilt here all season. I've backed the daft errors he's made. This was appalling and, whether people want to argue about it costing us the game, just isn't on.

  5. It's even worse than that. His leg is bent and then it shoots out directly into McKirdy's stomach. I can't believe a debate is being had. As stonewall as it gets.

  6. I think the difference in McKirdy is that it looked like they just tell him to run around the front the front line, drop back if he wants to pick the ball up,just giving him a free reign to do what he wants instead of telling him a position to play in and its working for them and him

  7. First posting....go easy on me😀 I wonder if Sheff U would sign him and loan him back to us for the rest of the season? Perhaps someone could confirm if this is allowed. We will sure miss the energy he gives the team and the way that gets the crowd going which in turn raises the whole teams energy levels!

  8. Conlon looked like he was in a coma. If he is fit and ready to play then play him. But yesterday he was light years off the pace. Wilson too. Just because he played well earlier in the season doesn't mean he is ready to take the weight up front now. Aside from individual players struggling, we must look at the formation. Hussey at left back is much bigger player than Gibbo. So we can go 4 at the back without being vulnerable in the air. He is also confident on the ball and doesn't need an extra centre half to square to. Meanwhile that extra centre half left us overrun in midfield v Swindon; so either drop one out or play one that can really get on the ball and step into midfield. For me we need to go four at the back and get Worrall upfield. Harratt starts and I would give the other new player Edmondson a start. They have fantastic mobility and can press and run in behind. Even if Salford park the bus, Wilson isn't a full target man and so I think we need to move the ball quickly and try to get in behind down the flanks. Worrall and Gibbo down the right to do that - although I can accept Cass as well. If Amoo is ready he could come in as the fresh legs if needed. But actually I do think we need to win this. We have a series of difficult games coming up which could reverse our fortunes or see us off. So confidence building is essential on Tuesday.

  9. There’s a lot of ifs and buts! However we were poor very fortunate to get the game back to one all with a wonder strike. Could we have turned it around second half with eleven men ? I don’t know we were so far off the pace I doubt it. We were given a real footballing lesson, the only positive I can take if anyone was watching our players with a view to buying would be very disappointed. Williams for them was by far and away better than anyone we have. How Swindon have turned around there start of season mayhem and problems to be up there is truly an unbelievable achievement. All credit to there management and players. Let’s hope this game is a kick up the pants and we can start performing for 90 minutes and not 45

  10. From my view in the paddock Jean i said he will be sent off as soon as he did it,his studs went into his chest.. he was stupid,a simple catch and then drop with it or let McKirdy clatter into you,he set out to do him imo and being honest earlier in the game i think he tried to do similar with a punch when clearing the ball,oh well got him in the end i guess but from my view it was a clear sending off(maybe the ref thought everyone was chanting for the keeper to go 🙂 )

  12. Good points - they did to us exactly what we were doing to other teams for the first 3 months of the season - never gave us a second on the ball, (Ratmanship as it is know known 😁) and as you say, where have all our triangles and pull backs to the edge of the area gone to. Wozza was reduced to banging crosses in to non existent P*pe style centre forwards. Nothing missing that cant be got back, but puzzling where it has gone

  13. There’s no doubt that the sending off killed the game for us, but we were not at the races today. What’s happened to our pressing game, why are we sitting back allowing teams to pass the ball around for fun. What’s happened to our midfield being the best in the league, we give the ball away far too often. Understand DC’s frustration with Covolan but time and again it’s all about changing the game in the second half, never heard DC admit he got it wrong first half. If we want promotion we need to be positive not defensive. If we keep the ball the opposition can’t hurt us, back to basics. My worry is we were slow to start the season, we can’t afford to be slow with this “re-start”. We need to be positive and take the game to the opposition. One bright light on the horizon is Kian Harratt, seems to be a genuine goal scorer if we can get the service to him.

  14. poor result today, but seriously we haven’t looked right for a while. when was the last time we clicked and played well and dominated a game? we look so off the cuff at times and disjointed. i’m a little bit worried about Conlon, it’s as though the armband gives him the right to play every game but to be honest i don’t really see many leadership quality’s in him. it’s like last season has gone to his head and he ha stopped doing what made him have a good season in the first place and that was getting stuck in making tackles, being competitive and nasty but now he struts about and doesn’t look interested in big games. wearing an armband shouldn’t make you undroppable. if we are to sign another midfielder i’d make it an experience one who can control that midfield and get us back to being competitive in the engine room because right now we don’t look great in the middle

  15. It 100% cost us the game. It was 1-1 at the time and about to be half time where we could switch it up. Just because they outplayed us first half Dosent mean the 2nd half would be the same. Nobody is saying Stone is amazing but he hasn’t been sent off numerous times for stupid errors. Covolan lost us the game today and against Northampton. Two huge games and 6 points thrown away. I couldn’t care less what he did last season, he’s been crap for us this season.

  16. Can't agree with that. McKirdy had no chance of getting the ball but jumped into Covolan, probably hoping to distract or even knock the ball free, we've all seen that happen and the ref fail to blow. But Covolan saw him coming and raised his leg. Stupid and deserved a card. Arguably McKirdy deserved a yellow at least as well.

  17. Lots of owners throw money at trying to get promoted. Sometimes it works others it doesn't. Sometimes you end up flying like Bournemouth or brentford, others you end up plateauing like Mansfield and others you end up plummeting like Notts County or Chesterfield. It's when owners don't understand that there is no guarantee throwing money at it will work that cause problems and you can end up in a situation like the latter 2 clubs mentioned. I like to think that there is more to our owners, they understand that that is the case, they wouldn't get disheartened and lose interest and they wouldn't over commit and put themselves and their business in jeopardy.

  18. He may not have spoken to the club but his agent has done all the negotiating resulting in no agreement, same conclusion resulting in us bringing in a replacement.

  19. The club is more professional than that. Conlon was signed up sharply last season, no way has nothing been discussed with gibbo. I think he will be gone this week (but really hope not)

  20. Once again there was 30 yards gap infront of Hussey all game. This has been a constant for whoever we play at left back as no midfielder attempts to fill that gap. Cass is not a defensive full back either. He is good going forward but lacking in defence. What has happened to Pett and Conlon? Absolute die both of them yesterday and frankly need a rest on the bench. Wilson got diddeley squat service but even so looked way, way off the pace. It's no wonder we lost with the above in mind! However it was one game, we still have games and time to ressurect our season but honestly now we have to fight for a play off position. To dream that we can now secure top 3 is just that, a dream Reality.

  22. Record with Gibbons in the league: Played 15, won 9, drawn 2, lost 3. 29 points. 1.9 points per game. Record without Gibbons in the league: Played 7, won 1, drawn 3, lost 3. 6 points. 0.9 points per game. Small sample sizes but I would be seriously concerned for our promotion hopes if he goes. I think his ability is replaceable but it's his 'other' stuff which isn't. He gives the team and fans that intangible 'lift' with his runs and tackles. It's not something you find in many players.

  23. I know what you're saying just think football in general gets caught up in this formation talk. As the home team the onus is on us to let Swindon worry about us not the other way around. I just want to see our best players playing to give us the opportunity to win a game. For example Salford who cares if they play 4-3-3 , 5-1-2-3 or whatever, it's what we do with a squad the envy of most League 2 clubs

  24. The silly thing is I think if Covolan had just got up and kicked the ball up the pitch the ref would have played on. Rolling around play acting on the floor forced the ref to make a decision. I don't think the liner made the decision the ref probably asked him if he saw a reason not to give the keeper a red before making such a big decision. He wouldn't have had this option if the game hadn't stopped. I think its a stone wall red. He went up thinking its an opportunity to leave one on mckirdy, mckirdy pulled out as he wasn't close enough to challenge so Cov followed him with his leg. Silly decision that cost us an opportunity to make a game out of it 2nd half. It was a brave decision by DC which backfired, to play the 2 new guys on the left, and with Harratt often being the player to run the channels in effect meant that we had 3 new signings covering the whole left side of the pitch. A big part of our play this season has been cass and jones joining in the attack and being comfortable on the ball. Hall looked alright but not quite like Jones on the ball. I think people have got a bit over excited. We look good but promotion isn't guaranteed. This year we have a better squad and have improved an awful lot off the pitch. We have had an injury crisis up front and are still in a position where if we win our games in hand we are in the automatic promotion places. We should be there or thereabouts come the end of the season even with the odd slip up.

  25. Wasnt at the game due to Covid but listened on the radio. Yatesy made a good point when he said that if Cov was worried about getting clattered he could have jumped up with his knees out in front of him. This would have protected him, done Mckirdy more damage if he had kept on coming and importantly Cov would have still been on the pitch. The old saying you have to be a bit mad to play in goal, you dont however have to be stupid.

  26. Of course we want to win but there is still plenty of games left if we don't. Don't need to panic. I feel we need to get up and running again, abit like at the start of any season. Hopefully, this will start on Tuesday.

  27. He gets 4 games for it being his 2nd red card. I can't believe I'm typing this about a goalkeeper, who also got sent off in the last pre-season game. 3 red cards in 23. It is staggering.

  28. The next two games are massive for me. Positive results and 4 points and we’re back in the mix failure to do that could see us around mid table. And to go from 2nd to 11/12th would be a disaster given the players he wanted, he’s now got. Didn’t Carlisle do something similar last season in going from top or 2nd to nowhere?

  29. I'm probably going to be stupid enough to go. If we churn out another Walsall/Swindon performance I'll lose it. Getting schooled yesterday was an embarrassment. Yes Covolan prevented HT changes but I'm getting annoyed at how often we seem to need to make HT changes because we're chasing a game. Yes it's great he knows how to do it as the previous manager stuck to 433 every week but our slow starts all the time are really starting to get on my wick.

  30. It goes into his stomach very clearly on the video. He moves it very deliberately so he could stud him. His foot shoots out after he collects the ball. It's a red for any player at any level. I say this as the biggest Covolan fan.

  32. Yep, and he looked better than anything we had frustratingly. We need to do something similar with Politic and we need a midfield that is as good as theres because we were miles away. That’s 3 home games - Rochdale, Walsall and now Swindon - where we have been made to look an incredibly poor side by sides who have literally passed us off the park in midfield. Rochdale and Walsall were not in contention and are still not, and Swindon’s team was literally cobbled together albeit has gelled. So I feel we’re entitled to expect better and why I now don’t think we’ll get promoted. As I said, FGR seem unlikely to falter, Tranny, Swindon and Mansfield are all on unbelievable runs, Northampton are tough to beat as are Exeter, Sutton seem to be durable as well surprisingly. I reckon we’ll need 85 points for top 3, which is 50 points from 24. That’s a heck of a run - 16 wins, 2 draws, 6 defeats for example. Harratt and Hall aside, it really was a day to forget.

  33. Agree, though notice when Johnson was sold either DF or DC said something about the deal being in line with the new strategic approach to player trading, which to be fair is great and is what the likes of Posh, Brentford etc have been doing for years.

  34. I dont think its a case of them trying to flog him, there has been interest in Gibbo all through the start of the season from the league above and the championship,so with him being out of contract in a few months the club cant really stand in his way,the championship would be a great move for the lad and we cant begrudge him that...sadly the fee wont be what it should be just due to the lack of contract length but what i would hope for is that we insist on a decent sell on clause a bit like exeter do with their players they sell

  35. Lucas can be great with the 'dark arts' (his pulled hammy at Scunny etc) but I honestly think he thought he could get away with leaving one on McKirdy here. The way he writhes around after despite him leading with his foot shows it. Trying to be far too clever and has probably lost his job as an EFL keeper. People may want to argue but there won't be a single neutral who will view that and think it wasn't a red. As blatant as it gets.

  36. Results aren't the main problem - we haven't played well for an entire game against 11 men since Colchester at home on the 23rd October. We've won games - against 10 man Crawley, 10 man Accrington, a dismal Hartlepool, Burton, against 9 man Bristol Rovers. At Burton we weren't very good until Politic did his thing for 5 minutes, as fun as it was. You could argue we played 'well' against Hartlepool in that it was fairly routine but I don't remember coming away thinking we'd controlled it (can barely remember the game tbh). To make matters worse, we're not grinding out points - 7 from 7 is about reflective of our performances in that timeframe. We can't keep clean sheets - 1 in 12. We're not going up if we're going to concede in 11 out of every 12 games. It's bad enough not having any fit strikers with more than 2 career goals (Wilson is miles off); it doesn't help when you need to score 2 every week to win. I'll be frank that if Gibbons goes I think we're in trouble. He's absolutely fundamental to what we do, and whilst he is theoretically replaceable, there's not many Gibbons-type players out there ready and available. We don't have a GK we can trust. Has Conlon had his head turned or is he just way off the pace? Been ages since he played well (Bradford?). Will Clarke accept that 352 just isn't needed every single week? There are real issues which I don't think are knee-jerk after today - we went into Bradford on the telly with real optimism and have stumbled since. Micky saw this happen in Nov-Dec in 12/13 and refreshed us with Hughes and Purse. Not saying we need a big-money buy but a 'refresh' is needed. What is positive is that despite these issues it's still in our hands to just be in the top 3. It just needs fixing. It's not an unfixable disaster but we need to get a grip and start controlling games.

  39. Just because we deserved to be losing at half time doesn’t mean we had to go out of our way to give away a pen and a red card during first half stoppage time. Second half might have been a different kettle of fish, equally it might not have been, but we have to keep ourselves in the game to give ourselves a fighting chance.

  40. Where to start with that… Poor first half. Similar to the first half last week but we got a great strike and at 1-1 I fancied us to make the tweak at half time to turn it around for us, expected Dennis to come on and us to push into a three man attack. We gave Williams the same space we gave Bidstrup which was stupid considering he’s played at the top level. In that aspect Covolan cost us the game… not only by giving them a man advantage but a goal with a penalty conceded from what was essentially a dead ball as he had caught it. Absolutely ridiculous. Not sure if McKirdy said something or he put his foot up in defence worried he’d get clattered but it was a complete mess regardless. Third goal just summed the afternoon up, really one to forget. I have to admit I am a bit worried. We’ve been poor for a few games now, won 2 in 7, one against 9 men that we clung on in and just feels like the season is starting to drift away from us. We have some real tough fixtures coming up as well. We have to win Tuesday and hope we catch Orient cold because at this rate we will struggle to make the play offs if performances don’t click back in. Love Harratt though. What a strike. Good feeling about him.

  42. I can't believe how much grief Wilson seems to be getting (comments like he's not arsed). The guys been out for nearly 2 months. Before he got injured, he was playing like a top L1 player. Short memories have some Vale fans. I think today that he saw the futility in pressing the CB with the ball as our WBs were playing so deep there was always at least 1 player in acres for their guy to pass to. I also think that he seems concerned about tackling too hard, maybe his foot still doesn't feel quite right?

  43. No-one is saying Stone is particularly good, just that a keeper who needlessly assaults an opposition player is a liability and shouldn't automatically get his place back.
    2 points
  44. I don't believe Covolan's sending off cost us the game. I believe the fact that we were rubbish from the kick off cost us the game. They pressed us all over the pitch and we couldn't pass water at all. Covolan was statistically the best keeper in the National League last season. To say he should never play for us again is OTT. He will have four games to consider his stupidity - let's hope Stone turns out to be as good as everyone thinks he is.

  45. Watched the sending off again on the highlights. What’s so annoying is, if Covolan just catches it, McKirdy gets booked at least, potentially sent off. He was very late and was going to just intentionally clatter Covolan. Instead Covolan boots him and we get the opposite result.

  47. He had the ball and usually a goalie has his leg bent ready for the landing. Covolan lead with his foot out, made no attempt to pull his leg back and made contact with their player. He had plenty of time to pull his leg in, but never did. This gave the ref no other choice but to deem it dangerous play. If Covolan had his leg bent then you would have seen a different outcome and their player being warned or even a yellow card for a foul on the goalie. We used to practice this scenario in training sessions and the coach always said if you lead with your foot, you could end up injuring yourself in the hip and/or knee. Then when you hit the deck after the contact you could injury yourself from the landing or knock the wind out of yourself as your probably going to land off balance. Hence always lead with a bent leg as you are ready for the landing.

  48. I've not seen a keeper as commanding in the air as Cov in years he's also a decent shot stopper and his distribution is decent too. He's decent for L2 IMHO. He's cut out the dribbling bit and puts his foot through it now. Yesterday was just bloody stupidity though.

  49. The difference in the teams is that they also have Simpson who allows them to play further up the pitch and dictate play. McKirdy plays off him and brings Williams into the action too. With Proctor injured we just don't have anyone like this to allow us to play off and get further up the pitch. I'm as disappointed as anyone in relation to Covolan having stood by his previous errors, I hope that Clarke dishes out his punishment and he returns to the side when he feels it's right to do so. I'm not so convinced with Stone. I think that there's a really decent keeper there but he's got to cut out stuff like this.
