  1. Thought I’d start this thread so it doesn’t get lost in the match threads. Some of our fan base this season has been an embarrassment, calling for Askey to be sacked. We need to take a step back, and ask ourselves what sort of club do we want to be. Do we want to be another Salford just sacking managers for the sake of it? I personally do not and think that is ridiculous. If you look at the clubs of our size that have had success, like Wycombe for example, they’ve all had longevity and stuck with the manager and let them build something at the club. Let’s not forget where we’ve been

  3. This shows you what a fickle world football is. At half time on 14th November Askey was a good manager. Seven weeks later he’s gone. Very sad. Thanks for all your efforts John and Dave. They were appreciated in some quarters.

  4. Evening All, long time reader, first time contributor. Want to say a big thank you firstly to all of you lot for keeping me informed, entertained and something resembling sane regarding all things Vale over the past few 'trying' years, and for all that many of you did in helping get rid of N**m. Anyway, it's so good to be able to make my first post after a game like that. Thought in all honesty that it was a fairly even game in most respects, the difference being they missed their chances whilst we had two wonderfully executed goals, but we do look like such a well-drilled, organised squ

  5. I'm not happy that he's supposedly lost his job. Unlike Scumthwaite, it's difficult to celebrate someone getting the boot when they're actually an affable and nice bloke. I feel really harsh for saying it but unfortunately I just didn't think he was up to it and his limitations could no longer be covered up. No plan B, one dimensional tactics, inability to react or change a game are all criticisms that we have all been frustrated by since he started. It's unpleasant but what can you do. I can imagine Carol is actually quite upset. I have never felt sorry for a departing Va

My first encounter was during my first and was meant to be my only Fans Forum Originally it was my intention on that night to announce l was winding up the Club and refunding all ST monies When the meeting starting l recall a very passionate bearded guy giving me a grilling due to failures of stock in the shop I realised that night the passion of OS and many others and the rest as they say is history OS or Mike as l learnt later was one of my biggest critics but always presented himself with passion and at times with restrai

  7. Message / request to Martin Tideswell. Can we please have a bit more general communication around what’s happening at the club. And I don’t mean the manager situation... I’m talking just general things Port Vale. I had no idea that Richard Duffy was back working at the vale until it was on Radio Stoke today. We have heard nothing from Billy Paynter since his return, an interview would be fascinating. I would love to know his thoughts on his career and what he brings. What’s his official role, he was on the bench today I think... what’s his role in this interim period. How

  8. If you don't want to play for the club, leave. If you need faith in your manager to be able to succesfully pass a ball 2 yards, you're in the wrong profession. If you have lost faith in your manager, at the very least do the jobs that you are being paid very well to do to the best of your abilities. If you are deliberately causing trouble behind the scenes, hang your head in shame. If you want a new contract, either here or elsewhere, play for it. If you have a problem with your manager, have the decency to air it.

  9. I am loving that these friendly matches are on Youtube. It's grate for me as I am blind that they have Phil Bowers doing the commentary. I just cant wate to get back down VP with my kids as soon as we can. My little girl keeps asking me when we can go again. I hope it is more about the games and not the sweets and pies she makes me get her lol.

  10. We weren't great. It was a reserve side plus Bernardo and Aguero. I knew Vale fans would be distinctly unimpressed with the atmosphere from City fans. Our popular end is the stand which you had. Whenever we have a Cup game that end gets broken up. The atmosphere is very different when we have a big game in the League. At least we turned up though unlike most FA Cup games. I watched the highlights yesterday and there were some very poor crowds. The FA Cup still represents a great opportunity to get to Wembley but their must be a logical explanation for low crowds. It seems th

  11. Days like today are why I hate football sometimes. I’m not sure why people are rejoicing. Yes I wanted a change, but this is a genuinely sad day for the club and a very decent guy who obviously thinks a lot of the place has lost his job. I hope the players sit up and take note. Thanks John for keeping us in the League, Crewe away, Man City away and the subsequent run and Bolton (when was the last time we scored 6 away?).

  12. A lot of Vale fans will never truly know how much they owe Mike Lakin for the existence of their football club. Would love to have something commemorated for him at the ground, and would be more than happy to contribute. The man was at every single meeting, march, and event organised in an effort to save Port Vale. He was absolutely instrumental in removing both V2001 and Norman. When football returns, we'll only have a club to return to thanks to Mike sacrificing hours of his time, taking the stick, driving to isolated far-flung pubs for meetings, turning up at the ground early to distri

  14. Following Bury's demise on BBC Northwest I'm struck by the quality of the "Spokespeople" for Bury FC who didn't seem to have the ability and nous to remove their clown in charge and it made me realise how bloody lucky we are to have our supporters club, Black and Gold and the guys behind the scenes who worked tirelessly to bring the pressure on Smurthwaite to relinquish his grip on our club. And how bloody lucky we were that Synectics Solutions decided to move from Newcastle to Burslem to be our next door neighbours, because without that stroke of fate we could easily have been Bury FC.

  15. Very telling words I'd really really really love to know why there was neither a minutes silence or a minute applause for the very sad loss of one of our own Charlie and a superb player from our hey day in Johnny Jeffers This needs to be pointed out to whoever that it is totally unacceptable and I'm maybe too strong here , but downright disrespectful. The no crowd has no bearing on it. Rest in peace 2 great blokes and shame on no respect being shown at 3-00pm

  16. I'll make some fairly controversial comments here. We're being let down by the entire club, at present. There is a complete abandonment of anyone to take a decision and sort this chaos out. We're meandering, with the club in shambles. Leaks all over the show. Players disinterested, making uncharacteristic mistakes, and looking like a group of strangers. A managerial team of rookies, supplemented by two lads who a few weeks ago were running drills with the U14s. It's non-league. I'm afraid Carol is not covering herself in glory here. I am a massive fan of her, but she's not handling

  17. I think this is a mistake. Carol has more than earned the right to make calls as she sees them, and I'm right behind whoever she chooses as a successor. However, I think JA was capable of turning it around. He got us playing decent football at times and would have taken us up last year if Covid hadn't come along. With the window approaching, I think he knows better than anyone what needs to change in terms of personnel - will a new manager have the same understanding? Ultimately, recruitment has cost John his job, but his ability to improve players like Joyce, Wozza and Gibbo will stand us in

  18. I'd like to say thanks to John for all his hard work, for coming in and turning the team around and for the highs we felt during his tenure. Sadly results dictate that things couldn't carry on the way they have been more recently and change was inevitable. Edit: mention also to Dave Kevan. Thanks for your efforts and best of luck in the future.

  19. Ok apologies for suggesting you anti Askey posters would be gutted tonight. I accept we are all Vale with different views but some of the comments on here pillorying Carol for not sacking him were absolutely disgusting attacks on what she has achieved after saving the club in the first place. Yes the last 6 weeks have been awful results wise but so many games went against us in injury time. Two when we had battled with ten men. Ok there weren't 5 first team missing in all those games but injuries to key players have had an affect. Regarding the 'poor' signings in Summer. Well if I remember

  21. I’m a firm believer in the psychological phenomenon of a winning mentality. As applicable in football as it is in anything else. Tom Pope, 2012-2013, 33 goals. Bang. League player of the year. Vale player of the season. Records set. Opposition managers like Evans seething. Some of those were outrageous. Pressing the backline for his 3rd or 4th against Evans, predator on the hunt unsettling the defenders...Hunt, terrified, then predictably turned the ball over under pressure. Wimbledon away. Two fcüking cartwheels to propel himself forward a few yards over the keeper and then slotted home

  22. This signing is a prime example of how a club can benefit from respected owners. Players can now see that they will be looked after properly which was not the case under our previous owner. Not only have the Shanahans saved the club, they have restored its reputation in the football world.

  23. I wouldn't overly get carried away as this is our worst team for as long as I can remember. You really didn't have to play well to beat us though and I think you have far more tougher challenges to come. Holloway has shafted our club from top to bottom dont go anywhere near him. He was the biggest con artist to ever cross our paths. He is just a showman and mad one at that. Good luck for the rest of the season.

  24. Absolutely disgusted with some players involvement in this. Whilst they remain comfortable on their cushy contracts with no chance of being sacked JA, who gave them the benefit of the doubt when he arrived and kept faith in most this season, without which most would probably be without a club, has his livelihood stripped away. Good luck JA, and thanks. Shame on the majority of our players, particularly the senior ones

  25. Wtf is wrong with people? Carol and Kevin paid many times over the odds to save this club. They have financed it through Covid, done tremendous community work in the name of the club and have become the goto people for comment on lower league issues. They have made the club respectable again and some of your are jumping up and down calling there judgement into question because we have lost 5 games. Grow up you ungrateful idiots. You don't deserve a club to support and you act like spoilt brats. If and when Carol decides Askeys time is up, then his time will be up. Not before

  26. Nothing wrong with getting just a little carried away at the moment, as long as we all remember that it's The Vale we're talking about. But then again this is the New Vale and it feels amazing, even though a ball hasn't been kicked yet. We've got a totally different feel, backed up with great PR hype. Be honest when have we ever had video with that production quality, let alone for the launch of a shirt - an away one at that? That S.O.B Smurthwaite turned us in to a failing pub team/club, now in comparison, Carol and Co. have made us feel like Vale Madrid WNE is amazing and I can't i

  27. It's a year since our ex owner was mysteriously knocked down on the Friday evening prior to Carlisle. Demonstrations were planned, the club was a shambles. An ok performance resulting in a red card for Ricky Miller and another home defeat . A January window resulting in numerous signings, Edser, Trickett-Smith, Elliott, Whelan etc . We leapfrog 12 months , lost only one home game, I actually enjoy attending now. Stability from new owners who actually give a toss instead of a self centered sponge. Steady progress on the pitch. Two unexpected away wins at MK and Cheltenham resulting i

I actually went in the East Stand and your comment that vale supporters didn’t make much noise is completely different from what city supporters were saying around me. They say from ‘words from out of babies’ two young supporters behind me asked their dad ‘why are vale supporters singing so loud others teams don’t sing so loud’ I think vale supporters should be proud of their support.

  29. I wrote this one off last week as I expected not a lot from this game so to go a goal down and show some character In keeping them out and going on to score a late equaliser shows some grit and determination in the team under Pugh. We’re far from a finished side and a bit off in terms of a play offs side for me, but for the little time Pughs been in control we’ve got four points and put some work in and got the results. Guthrie will improve us no end up top and we know what Taylor adds in goals and energy. experienced managers may work or may not it really is as simple as that. What

  32. Mentions specifically that he wasnt having a good time personally when he was here last time. This place is a different world these days, he will supported as a family man, he has moved back to Birmingham and he buys into our ethic. If we support him, back him and don't moan our sacks off just because we didnt get Maynard then there is every chance he could be a very valuable asset. A champions team not a team of champions. In Askey we trust. Stop moaning you grumpy barsstewards 🙂

Seen his you tube interview where he states he and the club are in a better place than last time he was here . Oh his goal stats are poor , have you seen popes directly before joining us ? shocking !! 34. I honestly despair with some Vale fans... Is it bred into our DNA that we have to seek out negativity???? As I'm typing this, we've have just launched the nicest football strip I can remember, designed by an international superstar, we are linked with a top name striker and everything should be positive. The club and its directors are responsible for this positivity. They also try hard to engage with fans via social media to keep us updated, something we all cried out for in the past. At the VERY worst, there has been crossed wires over a tweet Martin sent out late last night. All this ta

Fcuks sake man. As Joe mentioned Mike was at every single meeting. He was responsible for the coffin march. I'd just to thank the marvelous Mr Edge for reaching the remarkable milestone of 500 Guess the Crowd competitions: I am certain he has entertained hundreds of you with the competitions and his hugely generous prizes. Not only that but the prizes bring in revenue for the club shop as they are mostly sourced from there. I am sure it takes loads and loads of time and dedication to manage the competitions but I don't think the OVF forum would be the same without them. On behalf of the OVF family I'd like to say - thanks Barry! 🏆

  37. Where to start? Unfair to single individuals out as every single player was absolutely outstanding in quality, workrate, and organisation. They all did their jobs perfectly. Colchester are a damn good team and we've played them off the park. The commitment to play good football in atrocious conditions is testament to how confident these boys are. We had half a team out and the lads that have come in all knew their jobs down to the smallest detail. If one pressed, the team moved as one to close off passing lanes and to limit space. If the ball was won, the transition onto the front fo

  40. To the players. I have watched the excellent training sessions on many occasions and the input from John Askey,Dave Kevan and John Rudge has been second to none.Whatever has happened on the pitch afterwards is a mystery to me.The games Ive watched have been dross and bear NO comparison to the training input.I'm convinced certain players have stirred up a hornets nest at the Vale. The reason certain players haven't been involved is because they don't make the effort in training.Lets hope for a strict new manager who can kick these individuals up the backside or out of the club.Thank you, the AS

  41. I feel for Askey. He came across as a gentleman who wanted the best for Port Vale and always conducted himself with integrity. As others have said, he saved us 18 months ago, gave us that great day out at City and but for Covid might well have got us in the play-offs. I'll happily shake his hand in thanks and gratitude and I'm very sorry it hasn't worked out. That said, managers live and die by results and we've seen a number of abysmal displays of late. A very embarrassing Cup defeat, several home games that have been akin to watching paint dry, and a recent run if 6/36 points is clearly

Turned Vale around and almost certainly would have got Vale in the play-offs in the 2019/20 season if not automatic promo if not for COVID-19, got us up to 4/5th if not higher in the 2020/21 season but results have not been good for the last 6 weeks or so. 43. Utterly disgusted with this topic. We have very short memories. We have a squad that is capable of competing. We are mid-table. Those who think they know more than a manager who has won titles at every level up to ours are wrong. To do this to one of our own shows me that we deserve the disaster we've lived through for years. We have had a club ripped apart by awful ownership for years. Why don't we appreciate the value of being together? Fervently IN for me. We are in a much better position than we have been in for years. We have a squad which is pretty much interchangeable. T

  47. I'd tend to disagree. Firstly, haven't the owners said that their spending priorities are for the existing stands which is why they won't be putting money aside for the LS concourse. So not only will the club work to improve the other stands but that work and improvements is guaranteed (i.e. it is not dependent on reaching a donation total). I don't think fans fundraising for the LS concourse is going to stop the club spending elsewhere on the ground. So in effect this concourse is an optional extra. I may have a vested interest (as I have three kids who come to games now) but I

Tom Pope is the number one choice to lead the line though he does need the help of a partner up front but tell me a striker who does enjoy playing on their own up front. There isn't a better centre forward in the division he has sublime heading ability, good ball control and is a good passer of the ball. Granted he lacks pace but as he himself admits ''how can you lose something which you never had in the first place?''
