  1. Email to the EFL. Sir, I would like some explanation as to why Gary Bowyer, manager of a team which dropped seven points during the month, including a home defeat, has been awarded League Two Manager of the Month for April. The record of Port Vale's Darrell Clarke, whose team dropped only two points and conceded only one goal in their six games, is clearly superior. The fact that Salford played two more games to get one more point than Vale should not make their record worthy of the award. I would be interested to know the criteria used to establish the winner of this award. If

  2. Hello from across the pond, I've been knocking this idea around in my head for a little. I think the one thing the modern Vale embodies is community - this was and has once again become a community club focused on the fans. As you can imagine from the States, I don't get to watch the Vale nearly as much as I'd like to (especially in person). That being said, if possible, I'd happily pay to sponsor two season tickets for the community at-large for the upcoming season to make sure some well-deserved Vale fans can bring the passion I wish I could to Vale Park. I know its not much, but who kn

  3. Thought I’d start this thread so it doesn’t get lost in the match threads. Some of our fan base this season has been an embarrassment, calling for Askey to be sacked. We need to take a step back, and ask ourselves what sort of club do we want to be. Do we want to be another Salford just sacking managers for the sake of it? I personally do not and think that is ridiculous. If you look at the clubs of our size that have had success, like Wycombe for example, they’ve all had longevity and stuck with the manager and let them build something at the club. Let’s not forget where we’ve been

  4. As it looks likely to be the end of his caretaker reign today a huge thank you is due to Danny!! To take a team consistently sh*tting the bed and get results where they were expected (Grimsby and Southend), take a point away from 3rd in the league away from home and only have one bad league game (against a team playing well at the moment) is a great performance. Through the difficulty of having Covid Danny has acted with dignity and worked his nuts off for the team. He has shown maturity in saying it too soon for him to be manager but with more experience he will be a great mana

  6. I genuinely feel sorry for fans of the Super Six tonight. Their clubs are in the process of global humiliation. Meanwhile in the meaningless football pyramid we’ve just witnessed a lad discarded by Stevenage, born in our city, and whose great grandad and great great grandad played for the club, score an absolute wonder goal and score both goals to win the game. They will never know how that feels and what that means. The beautiful game at its very best. Viva the beautiful game and viva Port Vale.

  7. This shows you what a fickle world football is. At half time on 14th November Askey was a good manager. Seven weeks later he’s gone. Very sad. Thanks for all your efforts John and Dave. They were appreciated in some quarters.

  8. Smith played 46 league games for us in L1, in a season where if Norman hadn't flogged two of our best players, we would have stayed up. Despite one bonkers and one useless manager., and an acid fuelled recruitment policy. And won the EFL Young Player of the Month, and winning player of the season, players’ player of the season, young player of the season, away fans’ player of the season and supporters’ club player of the season to boot. And no, before Breadwinner chips in, his form has not fallen off a cliff since. In fact he's added mazy runs into the box (winning the penalty vs Bradford

  9. Some interesting responses on here to the latest development. I'd like to add some context. In the past TWENTY YEARS we have only achieved a top 7 finish in the league... ONCE. This was under MA in 2012/2013. Let that sink in. 20 years playing in League 1 or below & only ONE successful league campaign. That points towards a clear problem at the football club & that problem has always been the lack of structure behind the scenes along with non football people making the key decisions. The football club has been been passed from pillar to post in that time. Every sin

Want to say a big thank you firstly to all of you lot for keeping me informed, entertained and something resembling sane regarding all things Vale over the past few 'trying' years, and for all that many of you did in helping get rid of N**m. Anyway, it's so good to be able to make my first post after a game like that. Thought in all honesty that it was a fairly even game in most respects, the difference being they missed their chances whilst we had two wonderfully executed goals, but we do look like such a well-drilled, organised squ

  11. Check out wiki. He's run the family business with his brother and father for 15 years and has his own football academy. He's not been "just" a player and manager. In view of the amount of criticism our recruitment policy has been in recent years I'm pleased to hear him say it needs a total overhaul - that's what folk have been asking for. Also, folk on here have been criticising Colin Garlick for not doing his job properly when running the football side of the business (wrongly in my opinion) and now they are criticising the club for appointing someone to do exactly that job.

  12. The meltdown on here is laughable. Please can someone tell me the success we have had in appointing a manager since Micky left? None. Flitcroft being appointed DoF shows our long term vision. It's honestly refreshing to see. Realistically we aren't going anywhere this season; so, therefore, we can take our time in appointing the right man for the job. I'll be honest, I'm more confident in this appointment than I would have been if we just appointed any old manager to sort out the mess. As I said before, what success have we had in doing that since Micky left? We've been g

  13. Really don’t understand the criticism of Hurst, I think people are being really unfair on him. At the start of the season, I don’t think anyone thought he’d even be in our match day squad, and I include in that fans, management and probably Hurst himself. He’s gone straight from the national league north to league 2, playing in a sh*te team, thrown in at the deep end. He’s a young lad making his way in the game, not even played 15 league games yet, and he’s already being written off by some fans. He’s probably on a pittance so doesn’t exactly take up any budget, and he’s under 22 s

  14. I'm not happy that he's supposedly lost his job. Unlike Scumthwaite, it's difficult to celebrate someone getting the boot when they're actually an affable and nice bloke. I feel really harsh for saying it but unfortunately I just didn't think he was up to it and his limitations could no longer be covered up. No plan B, one dimensional tactics, inability to react or change a game are all criticisms that we have all been frustrated by since he started. It's unpleasant but what can you do. I can imagine Carol is actually quite upset. I have never felt sorry for a departing Va

  16. My opinion on this is that what has happened today is what many have been crying out for in an age. Since Adams left we have promoted from within apart from the Bruno experiment. How many of us have bemoaned about doing stuff on the cheap with an old boys network of ex players and coaches ? We now have people running the show on the playing side with no bias and fresh eyes and ears . This is exactly what loads of us wanted. I'm very sad not to be able to say goodbye to Popey, Browny and to a lesser extent Monty and Joyce. The rest , well footballers come and go. It's a

But a while back someone despite Worrall being second to KDB in the entire country for assists still wasn't happy as he doesn't score enough goals . Worrall since Askey gave him a chance after he was jettisoned by Aspin has been a revelation. His work rate and energy are absolutely pivotal to our team. Even on an off day and he will have many of those, he still goes off having left every drop of energy on that pitch. Bearing in mind he had a scan a couple of weeks ago he's maybe been rushed back and asked

  18. What I don’t get about you, and posters like you, is where the anger and vitriol comes from, or what you think it might achieve? Guthrie is a young lad trying to earn a living. He probably knows better than anyone that his performances will determine whether he has a professional contract anywhere come next season. His dream, to be a pro footballer, hangs in the balance. I’m guessing he could have sat in his backside at Bradford and picked up his money until the end of the season. He’ll be desperate to succeed. As a Vale fan, I’m desperate for him to succeed too. I hope he does. I wish him luc

  19. Just listened to Flitcroft's and Carole's videos on You Tube. The most reassuring part of these impressive interviews is that it looks very unlikely that Pugh will, at this stage at least, be our new manager. Just a bit concerned about how long it's going to take to recruit because, in my view, we are are not yet out of the woods as far as this season goes. But the future looks bright. One of the questions raised frequently over the last few months is who is advising Carol and who exactly is pulling the strings on the footballing side. Theoretically, it was our Chief Executive but now we

In the know, Inner Circle, circle within a circle, I know something you don't know, If its not done the way they would do it they start dripping poison in peoples ears to undermine things. Some really awful behaviours on here for a group of people to support a club. Welcome David. We have been crying out for someone to be in charge of football matters at this club from root to branch. Now we have one. This club needs structure and foundations... Carol is in for the long term and wants success for us LONG TERM. Like it or not, Carols intentions are to make

I’m talking just general things Port Vale. I had no idea that Richard Duffy was back working at the vale until it was on Radio Stoke today. We have heard nothing from Billy Paynter since his return, an interview would be fascinating. I would love to know his thoughts on his career and what he brings. What’s his official role, he was on the bench today I think... what’s his role in this interim period. How

  22. If you don't want to play for the club, leave. If you need faith in your manager to be able to succesfully pass a ball 2 yards, you're in the wrong profession. If you have lost faith in your manager, at the very least do the jobs that you are being paid very well to do to the best of your abilities. If you are deliberately causing trouble behind the scenes, hang your head in shame. If you want a new contract, either here or elsewhere, play for it. If you have a problem with your manager, have the decency to air it.

  24. Here is my reply from the EFL: Hello Jean, Thank you for your email. The Manager of the Month is shortlisted by experts in the industry and a judging panel will then decide on the eventual winner. The panel take into account various different things - though results play a strong part, there needs to be consideration of the wider context of performance and other factors taken into account, otherwise there would be no need for a panel or a shortlist and it would just be given straight to the manager of the team with the highest number of accrued points. 27. After the tragic death of Lee I've set up a just giving page to try and raise £1000 for his family from the Port Vale family. It has really hit me for personal reasons as well. Won't bring Lee back, no money in the world can replace a husband, father and son . It's difficult times for us all but even a pound is brilliant. If you don't mind spreading the word to your Vale friends and I can either liaise with Rob on here or contact Carol to see about getting the money to Lee's wife and children. Rest in peace Lee and the picture on the just giving page reminds me of a brilliant

  28. I’m going to put it out there and say I really like the idea after hearing some of what he says. It’s a long term role that should build the club football wise, we’ve all moaned about the lack of focus on the football in recent months and this brings that. If you listen to what he says it makes sense. He should be in place first to sort the manager and then support them and it’s now top priority. Hopefully we can get that done quickly with initial interviews no doubt done. I’m positive about this.

  29. A lot of Vale fans will never truly know how much they owe Mike Lakin for the existence of their football club. Would love to have something commemorated for him at the ground, and would be more than happy to contribute. The man was at every single meeting, march, and event organised in an effort to save Port Vale. He was absolutely instrumental in removing both V2001 and Norman. When football returns, we'll only have a club to return to thanks to Mike sacrificing hours of his time, taking the stick, driving to isolated far-flung pubs for meetings, turning up at the ground early to distri

  31. Going from the video, we clearly do need a DoF. The club's needed completely remoulding since the Rudge years. I remember Sinnott stating we needed root and branch reform and it's never happened. If the infrastructure is as dilapidated as Flitcroft makes out, it would have been too much for one manager to sort. Give the guy a <ovf censored> chance.

  33. Days like today are why I hate football sometimes. I’m not sure why people are rejoicing. Yes I wanted a change, but this is a genuinely sad day for the club and a very decent guy who obviously thinks a lot of the place has lost his job. I hope the players sit up and take note. Thanks John for keeping us in the League, Crewe away, Man City away and the subsequent run and Bolton (when was the last time we scored 6 away?).

At £10 for a junior valiant membership/kIds ST you could get 50+ of the kids from the Hubb foundation free meals list signed up and down VP every game for the cost of sponsoring two adult ones, perhaps that would go even further for the community? Just an idea, didn’t know what/who you had in mind.

  36. We all have read the theories and rumours. Askey, Sinclair, Mckirdy, Robinson, Pugh, Garlick. All and more mentioned in disparaging ways throughout the season. I think last season in hindsight did us no favours just missing out and the national acclaim for our magnanimous vote to end the season early. The majority ( myself included) got giddy as we beat Crawley and Exeter. Immediately the cracks appeared ,3 successive games without a goal brought us down to earth. We then played ok against Salford and well against Cheltenham. Back in contention. Whatever has happene

Personally I think with the situation at the moment and having lost valued members of the OVF community through Covid, this site cannot condone breaking current restrictions. If you want to protest, then it needs to be virtual not in person and I don't want a thread on here encouraging breaking the current restrictions. If there are posts elsewhere encouraging such things, please report them to the admin team. Posters who persistently advocate breaking the regulations will be removed from the forum. Thanks, R

  38. I'm sorry, but I'm getting a bit tired of this. As much of a Vale legend he is, he's still a 36 year old player, like anyone else. So of course he should be treated like anyone else! As much as I like Tom, this is the right decision and I'm sure he knew himself, before he went into the meeting. If he couldn't read between the lines, then he really doesn't have all the experience, everyone is using as an argument to keep him. Everything comes to an end, and releasing a soon to be 36 year old, is hardly the biggest surprise ever in football. Come on, let's be rational here 🙂

If that makes me that ridiculous phrase "a happy clapper", then fine, I am optimistic by nature. 1 - As stated above, proof that we are investing in a long term plan to improve the football side of the club long term, not just plucking another manager in to try and juggle all the plates. No-one can accuse the owners of lacking ambition with 2 salaries being paid to get the football side right. If it puts some managers off applying, so be it - this m

Why would a club that has been a mess for a decade need someone to oversea the football Side of the club and possibly have an ethos that we employ into instead of starting from scratch every two years.
