Nathan Smith says he has “unfinished business” after his shock contract extension with Port Vale was officially confirmed. Smith was widely expected to move to a club in a higher division so his decision to stay is a huge boost for the Valiants. It means that every player offered a new contract this summer has agreed a deal. We take a leaf through the pages of a programme from Port Vale’s 1991-92 season as they take a trip to St James Park. About this match Taking place in the 1991-92 season this ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw with the Vale goalscorers being defenders Darren Hughes and Dean Glover (a penalty). It was played in front of a crowd of 18,386. However, the result was part of a club record seventeen game run without a win for the Valiants as John Rudge’s side struggled in Division Two. Port Vale have revealed there is a clause in defender James Gibbons contract that allows the club the option to extend the full-back’s deal. The right-back’s current deal was set to expire in the summer but Vale will be widely expected to activate the clause as Gibbons has been a key performer for the Valiants this season. Travel back to 1993 and watch a highly entertaining Autoglass Trophy clash between Port Vale and Northampton with cracking goals for both sides on display. This game took place at Vale Park on the 2nd February 1993 and the Vale scorers were Peter Swan, Mark Smith, Paul Kerr and Ray Walker. It was loanee Smith’s only goal for the club. Port Vale’s impressive 3-1 home win over League Two title contenders, Exeter City, has set the play-off race wide open. Vale were supremely clinical in front of goal for a change, giving them the platform to end Exeter’s 11-game unbeaten run and move to within three points of the top seven themselves. Port Vale are unlikely to be able to sign on loan midfielder Jake Taylor on a permanent basis according to reports. The Stoke Sentinel newspaper reports that Championship side Nottingham Forest have rejected Port Vale’s latest bid for the goalscoring midfielder. Taylor, 21, has been in impressive form since joining the club on the 30th August. As Taylor is out of contract in the summer, Vale were encouraged to make a bid to sign the player on a permanent basis but the newspaper claims that Forest will now be offering the midfielder a new contract towards the end of this season. Veteran striker Tom Pope gave a typically dry interview to the Guardian labelling himself as the “slowest striker in the world” ahead of the team’s game against Manchester City. Pope will get the chance to lead the Vale line against the FA Cup holders on Saturday evening but any nerves have not dampened his sense of humour. Former Port Vale player and agent Phil Sproson has told BBC Radio Stoke that Port Vale have made a permanent offer for loan midfielder Jake Taylor. Taylor has been a resounding success this season and with the 21 year-old out of contract in the summer, the Valiants are keen to retain his services. Striker Tom Pope’s treble in the FA Cup second round game against Cheltenham Town has taken him to 108 Port Vale goals. The forward had replaced Richie Bennett in the Valiant frontline and marked his return in style with a treble effort in the second-half of the game at Whaddon Road. The rapid-fire seven minute hat-trick means Pope matches Martin Foyle as the club’s record post-war goalscorer. The future of Port Vale’s Vale Park stadium looks secure for the long-term after it was declared an “asset of community value status” by Stoke-on-Trent city council. The news was announced at a Supporters Club meeting last nigh after the organisation applied to the council for the status. The application was made back in March 2019 when Norman Smurthwaite was still the owner of the club. The move effectively means that the group must be notified if the ground is put up for sale. Port Vale have confirmed the signing of 29 year-old defender Shaun Brisley. He will replace Connell Rawlinson who left to join Notts County and compete with Leon Legge, Nathan Smith and Kieran Kennedy for a place in the defence.
