  1. I have to agree with many on here that collectively that was one of the worst games by a Vale squad I have had the misfortune of witnessing in many, many, many years of supporting the Club. Gutless, clueless, unacceptable, shocking, dire....call it what you like, there is a frustrating common denominator about being a Valiant and that is your side will continually let you down when the horizon appears to be beckoning. No excuses last night. Walsall were up for it as everyone knew days before kick off. Vale simply hid in a spineless shell throughout the 90 minutes and no one can escape any criticism aimed at them for their totally inept peformances. I am still bewildered as to how a unit can produce so many goals and super performances over the past few months and then turn into a dumfounded mess of crap. Football gets you doesn't it and I assume the majority of us will still throw our hard earned money away chasing rainbows for the sake of Port Vale FC. We must be mad. My heart goes out today to Carol and Kevin who must have started to believe the impossible after their sterling efforts to ressurect a Club from oblivion. As fans and owners they must be embarrassed as we all are.

  2. Where to start withnthat tonight?? Yes we were utterly dreadful and made so many individual errors (Jones, Cass, Garrity) but we could been in front at half time. Firstly what was Worrall doing when their defender missed his header and left him with the keeper to beat only for him to decide to try and lay Amoo in. Then Amoo has 5 yards on the last man and decides to stroll towards goal and let the muscle bound centre half catch up with him As for the referee, yes he was poor and typical of the type we get at our level now but it can't have been a shock given his previous card happy games this season. I sat there laughing at our feeble attempts to get a foothold back into the game. Walsall were awful but bullied our precious ones out of that game. That must go into my top 5 pathetic performances over a 50 year period of support. It used to ruin my night but really can't give a **** now

  3. Spot on, especially Wozza up front, doing what he does best rather than trying to defend crosses into our box. He's our leading assist player for goodness sake and we need him on the front foot and putting some fear into opposing defences. Fortune favours the brave.

  4. Exactly that. This is what really pissed me off last night. Players make mistakes , it happens. Jones made a bad one for the goal, there were many others in the game all over the pitch, we just didn't concede a goal from them which is why other players have not been called out. Everyone will have have a bad spell at some point but to lack energy, drive, passion, determination, work hard and a will to win was embarrassing. What really concerned me about last nights performance though most of all there was not 1 player on the pitch demanding more of his team mates in that 1st half. The players mostly had head on the ground accepting what was happening and it was eerily silent. Not a good sign.

  5. Time to switch off from the Vale till the weekend. After 57years supporting them you'd think I'd get used to it. But I haven't. 😬

  6. Worrall has been a shadow this season of what we know he is capable of. He is being asked to play so deep most games that it negates his obvious strength in playing more forward to create havoc in opponents defences. He has been substituted more often now due simply to his ineffectiveness in games. I can also add that Conlon too has been asked to play more in areas we know he is far less effective. Both these players when allowed to forage forward are 2 of Vales best players to change and control games. Ok, we have achieved a good tally of points so far but if truth be known there are a massive amount of Valiants who would prefer to watch Worrall and Conlon actually play regularly in their most dangerous positions. Surely within the squad we possess others that can carry out the tasks they are now given?

  7. Drives me mad. It's not just the substitutions, it's the fact that our leading assists player has been forced into a semi-defensive role and then we wonder why we can't make chances against teams like Walsall. Wozza should have started last night on the right of a front three to give them something to think about but this damned obsession with 532 is nullifying one of biggest strengths. Subbed last night, I'm just hoping he starts on Saturday - up front where he belongs and is at his most dangerous.

  8. I think thats the issue. We have become predictable which really surprises me given the fluidity of the formation and personnel earlier in the season. I thought this was our big strength this season and why I had confidence in the squad to do well. Granted we are short up front with Proc and Wils limiting our options but when we are on a roll teams looked at our line up and really didn't know how we would play. It was the same last year during our winning run at the back of the season. Now its easy to see how we will play 1 hour before kick off.

  9. It's not just in midfield. We're light at the back and, when Proctor is out, light up top but the infuriating thing is that we have some muscle - and football - on the bench. This is League 2, we're not in League 1 yet, and while we're here we have to learn to match scrubbers like Walsall on the pitch. And you're right about the formation too. We can't turn up again with 352 against another team like Hartlepool who will know exactly what to do to beat us, nailed on. Not arguing to abandon 352 but when it's as plain as your face that we've been sussed, we have to change it. Askey couldn't do it, DC can and let's hope he does. Starting Saturday.

  10. The start of your second paragraph is absolutely on the money! They did want it more and that was inexplicable after Saturday. They should have been tearing the walls down in the changing room having built up a head of steam since 5.00pm Saturday. We came out and lay down and had our bellies tickled.....after 15 minutes it was obvious there was only going to be one winner. We had no stomach for the fight and looked like we thought we were better than this lot , just play. You have to fight and battle to earn that right to play your football and we were not interested. Add to that the lack of all the bog standard basics like passing and controlling and we were always on a loser. At least Clarkey saw the same and he will get a reaction....we hope!

  11. Nah it was a bit daft. Conlon was on the right wing to shoehorn Politic into the left. Garrity and Pett were overrun as one of them isn't great at football, our most influential midfielder was stuck on the flank, and Amoo was horrendously isolated. If you add in the back three being awful in their distribution (not helped by a midfield unable to deal with Labadie), and you get Jones launching it into the opposition's feet at every chance, then diving in, leading their goal. Cass just hoofed it down his line without a plan. It was just all wrong and once Walsall went 1-0 up, they were defensively sound enough to sit back and let our powderpuff attempts get nowhere. Once Conlon was silly, it was goodnight. It was a really poor set-up from Clarke and he tried to be a bit too cute with Conlon.

  12. I'm not sure I buy into this formation bashing. That very formation had a 53.3% win ratio and 1.87 points per game before the Bradford game. Players let us down yesterday.

  13. Walsall fan here. We did what we needed to do to win a League Two football match away from home. After only a few minutes there was a sense that you didn’t quite fancy the battle. Some neat passing at times but that game was always going to be won and lost by who won individual battles through the middle of the pitch. Last night that was definitely us. On the back of winning those individual battles we created more chances and scored one of them. I was on here having the Clarke discussion when he first joined you. So won’t get too much back into that. But having lost a couple against poor to average sides in this league, his motivational style will either bring players with him or alienate them. He seemed to just about ensure his post match last night was a collective rollicking. I hope for your sake it stays that way as when the pressure comes on top our experience would be that the deflection and hanging individuals out to dry starts to increase. Personally, I hope you stay up and around the play off spots. I just hope that by the time we meet again, we’ve somehow joined you.

  14. Same here. Went to sleep thinking about it. Woke up thinking about it. Mostly trying to think what we should do to get out of this slump, why we always seem to crumble when it matters, how we can get behind the lads on Saturday even after the anger, disbelief and let down of last night. It's in the blood and we connor help it.

  15. Certainly wasn't a case of Walsall being a good side, because they weren't. We could of played anyone lastnight & we'd of lost that. Shocking performance.

  16. I think last night showed just how many tickets we've been giving away to schools in the Bycars. I'd say we were a good 500 down in there last night v Bradford. A Tuesday night in a two-home game-week off the back of a last minute away defeat will have had some impact, but the main difference is the lack of kids versus a Saturday. Saw barely any last night. On the whole, the home turnout last night was woeful considering our home record, our league position and number of ST holders. It was Crewe-esque.

  17. People saying we’re set up wrong is all fine and dandy but the bottom line still is that Jones set the goal up, it was nothing to do with any trap set by the opposition, or great play, just a rank bad pass which left the bulk of the player marooned upfield in offensive positions completely unable to defend.

  18. Agree with IC. He's 100% correct. But last night was a bottling of disgusting proportions. Full on bottlers. Embarrassing beyond words. They need to know. There's a dip and then there was that first half. That team have no idea how lucky they are Micky isn't still here, they'd have been diving for 50kg weights in Longport canal by half 7. Not joking. He'd have hit the roof to be embarrassed by his players like that.

  19. Woeful performance ... Players need a kick up the backside which I'm sure they are getting listening to DCs post match interview. Hopefully no one expected us to win or draw every game all through the season and as DC keeps saying, football is a tough game and there will be bad patches throughout the season. Stick with the lads... get behind the club and let's put it right on Saturday. As an aside.... who remembers the following list of results: Port Vale 0 - 1 Morcambe Torquay 0 - 1 Port Vale Port Vale 0 - 2 Exeter Oxford 2 - 1 Port Vale Port Vale 0 - 0 Bradford Port Vale 1 - 2 Southend Bristol Rovers 2 - 0 Port Vale LWLLDLL - 4 points from 21 (1 point from the last 15 available in that run) That's our 2012-13 Promotion season... 21. When Walker has played he seemed reluctant to break into a run, and when threatened with an opponent going past him he resorted to crude body checks and hand/arm holds as if unwilling or unable to close down or chase back. All things I dislike, especially the shirt and arm grabbing, and especially from my team's players. He hasn't played many games, but those playing in his absence - e.g. Pett, Garrity, Conlon - have done much better.

  24. I wish we would just stop pointlessly pushing people over all the time too, especially when it's not even in danger areas. Fair enough you can say they go down too easy but when you run behind someone and put hands on their backs or just try to run through them it's frustrating. We do it a lot even when we are playing well.

  25. Not sure about all the hype about Politic. He made the headlines when he 1st got into the side as a sub and scored 2 cracking goals. Other than that he has done very little and has looked anonymous in the games i have seen. Proctor shouldn't start he is no where near fit enough or fully recovered from his op. He needs at least a couple more weeks otherwise he could end up being out long term.

  26. That was another decision I was baffled by last night, Proctor went up with their keeper a few yards inside the area. The keeper actually reached over the top of Proc to try to reach the ball, there was a coming together but they were awarded the free kick.

  30. Genuinely feels like the Crewe games we had when we were rubbish. We had absolutely nothing to play for and would hype up the Crewe games into far more than they were worth to give the season some purpose. We'd beat Crewe every game, with their manager overthinking things + the usually good players being miles off. We'd celebrate the wins like a cup final and, whilst Crewe were often annoyed, they had bigger fish to fry. Artell would come out questioning why players were 'hiding'. We'd hold a 1-0 win against them despite finishing significantly lower on a regular basis.

  31. Being physically bigger isn’t why we lost. Too many players not doing the basics of what’s got us to where we are this season is why we struggled.

  32. A record of 6-6-6 barely suggests Taylor is a managerial genius to me. As you said teams are gradually sussing us. I'm wondering if it's time for the return of Walker. Almost become the forgotten man. Puts a foot in, physical. Maybe horses for courses to get us back on track.

  35. Like DC post match interview, agree with everything he said. Also I’m confident he’ll put it right. He cares and it shows. Definitely the man for the job , even though he got it wrong tonight formation wise( saying that we weren’t up for it , so no idea if that actually matters).at least he admits it and will look at himself. Makes a refreshing change from the dirge interviews we’ve heard from Askey etc in the past which left me more angry than I was before I heard them

  38. I think the opposite, Walker in for Conlon isn’t a lightweight swap. However I do think that Cass is too lightweight and it showed last night and at Oldham where in both games he was bullied.

  39. If anyone honestly expected the results/level of performance from Swindon on 11th September and Bradford on the 13th November to continue on a consistent basis, then they haven't watched much lower league football. A regression was absolutely inevitable. As you accurately state, every team have really poor runs of form in a 46 game season. We had two in 12/13. The performance last night was atrocious but losing two games in a row is no mortal wound. We've been really good far more often than we've been bad. I hope we scrape something on Saturday, otherwise we veer into 'crisis' territory where everyone's head falls off. Clarke has been through far tougher than this.

Final one Drew with Barrow Drew with Cheltenham Lost to Mansfield Lost to Oldham Lost to Forest Green Won at Colchester Lost at Bradford DDLLLWL - 1 win in 7 and 5 points from 21 That's the other promoted team Cambridge The point here is that seasons are long, hared and there will be sticky patches. Its about how the team and manager handle these bumps. Don't lose your heads, don't be short termist. Back the boys. UTV

  41. Formation clearly plays a big part in it. They stopped our formation from working as have numerous teams. In a 352 it’s key that the wing backs are as high as possible, if they’re pushed back it becomes 532 and we just invite pressure as per last night. Mistakes are huge I agree. But we were never going to win with the way we (and they) set up.
    1 point
  42. I actually thought we played better once he got sent off. We at least still tried to get forward, even though we rarely threatened as they just sat back and soaked up everything .
    1 point
  43. Not sure I agree. Formation worked well early on, but teams have worked us out, every side is setting up the same way and pushing our wing backs back, and making the 352 become a 532. There has been multiple occasions where the 352 failed in the first half, and Clarke then had to switch things around in the second, so I’m not sure the stats are completely accurate give than different formations actually gave us some of those points. (53.3% won’t be correct as we were losing a couple of games first half using 352) For me, it was blatantly obvious within 5 minutes yesterday that the formation was wrong, walsall has like every other side recently pushed gibbons and Worrall back and had complete control of the midfield as we were sat so deep. Players were dreadful last night, no question about it, but the negative set up was just as poor. The first half we rarely had more than one player in their half, and his only outlet was Jones and cass smashing it forwards in hope. Been asking for a change in formation for weeks, in my opinion it completely wastes one of our best players in Worrall and Dosent suit us (part of the reason we have struggled with crosses is that they are aimed at cass / Jones) in a back 4 we would have say legge in there to win those battles. Not saying the formation should be completely scrapped as it has done well for large parts (usually against better sides) but we need to change it. Clarke is known as being a tinker man, he needs to change saturday otherwise the same will happen again. Clarke has said he likes to keep the opponent guessing, at the moment it’s blatantly obvious how to stop us playing.

  45. It’s very easy to fall into hyperbole and exaggerate things after an infuriating game, just listen to the nonsense on P&G from any of the 3 teams pretty much every week. But no, after sleeping on it and having calmed down, and thought it through dispassionately and clinically, Christ that fever dream really did happen last night. That first half performance will unfortunately being on the list of the worst I’ve ever seen from any side, not just Vale. Like Mansfield the wave of resignation swept over the crowd in the opening minutes as to the futility and inevitability of it all as yet again we played like 11 strangers. It’s bizarre, infuriating, unsettling how they’ve gone from winning non stop and scoring a daft amount of goals to putting in performances a hell of a lot worse than the worst of Brown or Aspin ball. Inexplicable. Jones must have something going on with him because he’s gone from sublime cross field balls to a pass completion rate against Bradford and last night that honestly must be in single digits. Last night was surely the worst game of his career so far and ever again. Conlon’s an idiot. The officials were utterly appalling from the beginning and he gave the referee another chance to make it all about him. Idiot. Come out and apologise. Walsall fans covered themselves in glory again with the paedophile chant, some of their own fans have criticised that being sung before this season at their games. They definitely definitely definitely don’t care about DC though obviously, last night very clearly definitely proved how unbothered and unscorned they are.

  48. Absolutely diabolical and I cannot defend it. Got it massively wrong and hold my hands up - people I criticised were spot on. The worst Vale performance since Aspin. Utterly absymal in every regard. Clarke overthought his lineup and decided on Conlon on the right wing. What? Knew we were done as soon as he started chucking forwards on with no plan - sign of a panicking manager. Everyone rubbish and Conlon was daft to pick up two yellows. Not a shot on target. Dan Jones has fallen off a cliff. The pass for the goal was bad enough, but his decision to fly in and leave Smith 2 v 1 was criminal and he needs dropping. Garrity is no footballer. Every touch is poor. They've turned up, outfought us, taken their only chance, and defended well against a pitiful front line from us. Had our trousers down and deserved their win. Defensively a good side and impressed with the composure of the keeper. Rubbish going forward and to only win 1-0 should disappoint them. A good side would have nailed us 3/4-0. After the run we were on, the dip was coming, and we're well and truly in the mix of one now. We went on a 5 game winless run in November of the last promotion season. They happen. Clarke is a streaky manager and he has to arrest this pronto before it becomes full-scale crisis. Proctor looked unfit and needs to be carefully managed back, as we cannot afford a setback. I still think we're going to do well. Tonight was a horrendous, horrendous showing from minute 1, but bad runs were inevitable and we need to ride it out. Hopefully we react to 2 defeats in the same way we'd react to 2 wins. This isn't things falling apart, but a big warning sign that we need to sharpen up.
