  1. Without sounding twee, as long as Carol owns the club we will progress in some way every year. It may be in small, slow ways, there might be mistakes. But some clubs in this league are run by ignorant, cheap, belligerent dinosaurs who will just drop and drop. We have had off-seasons in recent memory that have been entirely full of self-sabotaging balls-ups due to management. Those days are hopefully over, and I’m sure the next squad will reflect progress. Not night and day world beaters, but professional players operating in a respectable, ambitious set up.

  4. If we didn't have a reserve league, what did the non-1st team players do for match fitness? No wonder we slumped trying to rely on half fit players that rarely played 90 minutes.

  5. But for 3 of 4 years, that 'nucleus' has nearly been relegated. Completely fresh start for me.

  6. There is no evidence that squad stability leads to success at this level. Teams with mass turnover often do better than teams who keep the 'core' together. Fans getting excited about stability were pining after an era of football that is long gone. Our issue was a complete, laser-focus on 'continuity' without consideration that the same players may struggle to perform at the same levels, as tactics became predictable and some individuals declined measurably. Add in the depth signings, largely, being sub-par and you get the mess of the 2020/21 season. Unfortunately the vast major

  7. Release Visser Fitzpatrick, Mills, Legge , Brisley Joyce, Hurst Pope, Guthrie, Cullen Pay up contracts Whitehead and Robinson The injury conundrum Monty, Manny, Amoo all good players , will they even reach 46 games combined ? We simply can't get all sentimental because we've suddenly won a couple of games . Legge has been excellent since put back in the team but has shown many frailties including 2 red cards. Pope is 36 in August and please don't quote Kevin Ellison at me or I'll scream !! Ronnie Sinclair out to be replaced by Brown who

  8. Utterly defeatist to talk of what other teams are doing or only needing one more win to be safe. I don't want to see us limp to the end of the season. I want to see us continue improving, get the best out of the players and give the fans something worth watching. And, of course, breed hope and expectation for next season and beyond. Unless Clarke is all words and no action most of the squad are still playing for their Vale careers.

  9. Making wholesale changes to the playing staff every year is not good for any football club and as Vale have found out the chances of signing new payers who will do well/wonders is not much better than flipping a coin. I've read somewhere that Flitcroft and Clarke plan on using "metrics" to aid selection of players and I'm all for that if relevant but IMHO if a player has been the fan's player of the year or players player of the year then there can't be many better recommendation than that.

  10. This is turning into an interesting debate and, as I said recently, nothing like as predictable as a month ago! For me, the new fitness regime has to be honestly confident they can get Manny playing 5 out of 8 games - roughly the 30 per season we hope for? Similarly, but a lesser extent for Monty. Both of these are too good to release if they can maintain their fitness - and i know there's no guarantees in this. But Amoo, who is also in this kind of category, I would let go. He's a good player, but I don't think he contributes as much as Monty and Manny. Bring in a new DM...but is Jo

  11. Keep the nucleus of the worst vale side I’ve personally ever seen who have had countless seasons struggling (bar last year) and have been utterly attrocious this season. No thanks. Get them gone, two wins Dosent change anything in my opinion. A lot of the players are past their best now and the others simply aren’t good enough. If we go into next season (I don’t think we will) with 7/8 of the same starting players we will be in the exact same position. I hope there is a big clear out, Clarke usually has a big clear out and I hope the majority of our squad is moved on and we

  14. Darren I agree with your post, just wonder if Mills will prove a better player than we have given credit so far with a run of games. Crookes seemed to be benefitting from regular start before injury. Above everything else it's the same situation as past 6 years or so ... We have to find a replacement for Pope and hope Devante continues to progress.

  15. It was always going to take a few games for Clarke to get to know the player's and stamp the way he wants to play. Over the last few games even before the wins you could see the improvement game on game,. Keep up the good work Dazzer you are doing excellent in my book. UTV

  16. Win here and we probably can relax for another summer. Need to big run for the bottom two to get 45 points. Winnable, they seem a bit hit and miss had a long unbeaten spell to get into the good position but have dropped off again. Shame Mark Wright hasn’t played again as him trying to keep Wozza or Dave quiet would be fun! Cant be a ground we’ve had such a great record at can there? 6 visits, 4 wins, 1 draw and a loss (which we twice were leading in and then had a man sent off). We also won 5-0 in a Friendly to open the stadium. FGR we have lost 1 in 5 but won twice. A week to rest up aft

  18. I agree on wages being more important but certain clubs are definitely more attractive than others. If you listen to the Ale and Vale pod with Manny he says how the stadium was one thing that made him want to sign for us. And you can see why. Would you rather play at a tinpot ground like Stevenage or Vale Park? Obviously other things come into it more like wages etc. but if you offered someone the same wages, we’re a more attractive proposition than half the clubs in this league imo. Especially now that the previous clown in charge has gone.

  19. 5 better new players = mid table 10 better new players = playoffs 13-15 better players = a year to build and a year to win the thing that’s if we keep the best players we have. it’s a big task and very much a 2 year project I reckon. Resigning Hurst, Crookes and to an obvious extent the 6 non-leaguers in the squad would be like saying <ovf censored> it league 2 is where we belong.

  21. I’d look at it like this for next season:- Possible First Team Players(Keep) Brown Gibbons Smith Montano(If Fit) Conlon Worrall Taylor Amoo Rodney Backup or Rotation Players(Worth Keeping For 1 Year) Legge - Due to his age should not be considered first team regular next season but a good backup who could play 25-30 games Pope - Similar to Legge but wages may dictate if we keep him? Release/Transfer List/Pay Off Visser - Hard on the lad as he’s not done much wrong but the age cap means it seems silly to be having a seni

  22. No the PFA successfully challenged the wage limit in court but the squad limit wasn't discussed in the court case.

  23. Not a case of a 3/4 Rudgy top up, more a 3/4 keep for the First Team ? At least DF & DC will have had an in depth assessment of front runners, improvers, and development options. No doubt a few surprises.

  24. I think it very much depends on the circumstances. Mass turnover at Swindon got them promotion this year, mass turnover at Grimsby could see 'em out of the League this season. I don't think it's a cut and dry rule. Crewe went up with three permanent and two loan signings in the summer. Swindon went up with eleven changes over the summer. For me, I was wary of huge changes previously because I felt that a settled team which knew each other was gelling but that's changed after a summer of poor recruitment. So, I do think the time is now clearly ripe for a big overhaul. I think

  25. There is a difference between stability and evolution. Every year we should be looking to be bringing in 3-4 that can realistically challenge to get into the first team. Whats has happened this year is that the players bought in (with the exception of Dave) have been poor and not looked close to being first choice. Its essentially last years team that have got us out of this ish. we need a prune, but not back to the Norman scum mass exodus of players.

  26. For me, all we need is to keep the nucleus of the first team together and add quality. IMO, we need at least 1 good striker (excluding Dave, they can all go), a winger to replace Amoo who doesn't do enough, a good quality left back specialist. Add those 3-4 players and evolve the team and we will be there or thereabouts

  30. 593 ...suggest you misread my post. I never said 'how well we are doing ' I also never mentioned Askey. My view is about a dozen of our squad are good enough to do well in this league as they have already proven. I too was disappointed we signed Robinson, in fact I wasn't overjoyed at the possibility of Maynard (his form this season has shown nothing to make me think I was wrong) The last two games have shown the players when fit are good enough but it would be wrong to think players like Whitehead have a future at Vale. At the moment I can see there being room for 8

  32. Senior played well against us a couple of years ago and we were a bit concerned when he came on. We’ve made the mistake of signing players who do well against us before. Bob Delgado is the prime example!

  35. Been quite a happy hunting ground in recent years. My only visit there was the opening day 3-1 when Dan Turner scored. I'll be happy with a point here but absolutely no reason we can't win the game now we have this new found confidence. 1-1

  36. And when he get's injured for 6 months? All you eggs in one basket... We need a number of players who are each a significant improvement on what we already have, or can be quickly developed into such, not just one "superstar".

  37. Lighten up mate! It's a bit of tongue in cheek mate after an awful season. A bit of fun. I don't think he's a world class manager. Let fans, who have spent hundreds on a dire year, enjoy a couple of wins, and learn to read sarcasm.

  38. The commentary today was very good. Credit to them. Best yet. Problem with P+G when we win is that those of us who follow are wiped out with stress and cracking open a bottle in celebration. And the moaners don't have anything to moan about. Ergo, silence.

  39. Barrow will make the playoffs at this rate😄. Not too much to worry about tonight. We needed a couple of results and we have them. For a while it was difficult to see where they were going to come from but I always had hope.
