  1. On what basis are you forming that opinion? He has yet to be given a proper chance.

  2. I like Askey and think he has done a good job since taking over and wouldn't want to judge him untill end of the season. However I think the last three games are worrying because in all three games we should have made formation changes after about 30 mins. Saturday it was obvious 442 wasn't working and the midfield was overwhelmed. The week before was the opposite after 30 mins we had so much of the ball could have easily go two up top and probably gone to an attacking 352. I think a higher league manager would have made changes during the matches and not let them drift in the way we have don

Calm down me owd fruit,i think you have a problem tiger but nowt i can do about that...... did i say i was on about you i am on about those saying we need a new manager etc,i dont even think i commented on the wigan game as its one i wouldnt of got excited over. For people to start going off on one over Askey after 5 league games is very silly imo, considering the tripe we had when he came in check his stats with us and they are decent tbf to Askey

  4. In my opinion Vale have, if not the best at least one of the best Goalkeepers, centre half, right back, left back and midfielder in Division 2. That is a brilliant platform to build a promotion winning Team. The manager did bring in "his own" players to complement the squad. What we do know is that even though it's early days the squad is not performing to its full potential. Questions need to be asked therefore....what is wrong? Having been a Valiant for many, many years I do accept that we always flatter to deceive and in my ageing years I realise never to expect too much from an

  5. Going to put it out there but I’m not convinced Rodney is the answer (on the flank anyway). I’d go with the Oyeleke, Conlon and Joyce three and McKirdy and Woz out wide (assuming no Amoo). Striker is a conundrum, we didn’t create a thing after Pope went off, but Salford won’t be as solid set up as other opponents so Cullen probably edges it it fit. Rodney seems better as an impact sub at this stage. He is lightening fast but struggled to impact the past 2-3 games.

  6. Nobody is saying players "performances can't be questioned" but this thread is about JA. He's almost certainly as brassed off as the rest of us with the form of certain players. A few games is a "minor blip" surely? You are saying that we shouldn't look at last season but the problem with that idea is that due to the way the players, individually, and the team as a whole, performed last season we fans have much higher expectations for this. Hence some are questioning the manager after just a few games. One of which, ironically, the Exeter game, isn't being mentioned much. In

  7. There isn't a lot wrong with our defence overall, whoever we play there. It's in the final third where we are lacking. I reckon most of us would indeed probably say that our best three in midfield are Oyeleke (who we badly miss), Joyce and Conlon, so stick with them unless loss of form/injuries occur. Up front is the real conundrum where we have seven players to fill three places and I guess we'd all have three different picks because there isn't a lot between them. How many of them are 100% match fit is another question. I'm not sure that McKirdy is. Nor 1-2 others. And, sadly, Amoo

  10. I think injuries are keeping out our better players out otherwise Manny, Amoo, Gibbo and possibly Mckirdy would be starting. So at the moment I don’t think Askey knows his best team and couple that with some players being out of form and we’ve had a mediocre start. But I do think that Mills, Whitehead, Robinson, Rodney and FItzpatrick are an upgrade on those squad players from last year.

  12. Hardly outwitted...it wasn't anything Carlisle did that caused a sitter of a header to be missed, nor a penalty...and the subsequent follow-up! Those two go in and it's, undeniably, a different game. Missing both clearly gave them more confidence. I don't blame JA for making changes, at any time - with so many players capable of playing in more than one position, and of similar abilities, changes may be made for any number of reason - physical or mental - and these known to the coaching staff, only. I thought it was quite an adventurous team...and going two up early on would have shown that. M

  15. But - if you pretend all that, it would be too much of a love in...according to Rob1983!!!! It's all too easy for people to forget JA got us to 1 point...1 goal from the playoffs...and to write that off because we've had 3 poor results on the bounce. Where was all the criticism when we had good results on the bounce? - well, of course there wasn't any...just as in the last few seasons they're waiting for 3 bad results before they pop their heads above the parapet! Despite the fact that we retained most of last year's team, we still have several new faces. Finding their best position

  16. I don't think that's entirely fair. How many times was aspin berated for setting up to stop the oppo rather than concentrating on what we can do? I'm sure JA and co take into account oppo threats but his first thought always seems to be our game, in credit to him. From memory, I don't think JA has actually played 442 for us as a matter of design until the Carlisle game, which was understandable given the wigan win and general performance. Problem was, for me, that the players utterly failed to execute it. If we'd had the same level of performance as against wigan, I've little doubt we would pr

  17. Playing devil's advocate, those 2 midfielders that you refer to created absolutely nothing in their previous game against harrogate, and their replacements in the wigan game played very well. Out of interest, if JA had played Joyce and conlon in the Carlisle match, with the same result and performance, what would have been your reaction then?

  19. Ok TB, you're clearly not going to let this go, so what's your solution, aside from 'play better'? Not randomly dropping your two best midfielders from the team together when not injured would be a hell of a start. And when something clearly isn't working after 45 minutes, don't send the same team out with the same formation and the same tactics. You can't suddenly polish a turd.

  21. At the end of the day people are entitled to their opinion. And mine is that despite what he's done in the past, Askey has got it wrong badly in the last couple of weeks, none more so than on Saturday when he picked a starting 11 nobody else would. Simple as that. Do I want him gone suddenly? Of course not. I already said in my original post that this isn't what this thread is about. But there can be no doubt that the last 2 or 3 performances in the league have been as bad as we saw under Aspin. No clue in attack, confusing team selections and no thought to change things when they clearly aren

  23. Never underestimate the power of a woman.... Being blunt the last 2 home games and Morecambe away have been appalling. If it continues for a dozen or so games, then I do feel action needs to be taken. This club has to be ambitious, there is too much money tied up in the business to flounder in League 2. It is a sharp learning curve for the Shanahans, one in which I have every faith they will do the 'right thing' whatever that turns out to be. 24. Form isn’t static, though. When Taylor got injured, we didn’t miss him because Burgess played so well. They were also so similar that I think Taylor got credit for some of Burgess’ work. All players move in and out of form. It isn’t guaranteed that Taylor will do well for Scunny even though it’s a fair bet.

  33. I thought Gibbo had a pretty good season last season bar a couple of dodgy games. Certainly one of the more consistent players I thought. But on the other hand as we all know Sproson has it in for certain players that aren’t his. He even did it to Clarke on Saturday. Granted Clarke wasn’t at his best but he didn’t warrant some of the crap Sproson was coming out with.

  35. Thats more like it FFIDG,far better than your last post about closing club down. Some very good points here about certain players not performing to the level we expect. The newbies are not really good enough at the moment but time will tell.Gibbons was getting loads of abuse on here and by Sproson last season, but look how well he's performed prior to his bad injury.I am still puzzled by that McKirdy signing as he's done nothing to inspire us .Time to step up lads!!

  39. With the squad we have we should be better than 1 point from the last 9, and 7 points from a possible 15. That much I do know, regardless of last season.

  40. I don't think it's a "love in", more like fans being realistic. Most would agree that on Saturday the team was a surprise and the performance and result would clearly indicate it was a mistake. The facts are that we had a great season last year, expectations are understandably high, but it's far to early to start scrutinising the manager.

  41. Wow some of the posts on here, lets just remember where we were 18mths ago and what happened last season before we all have breakdowns 5 games have been played in the league,i would sooner see where we are after the first 10,far more important things to worry about than a manager at a football club......oh the same manager the majority were wanting to give a knighthood to after last season.

  42. Pretty low I would imagine. They're unbeaten. Nothing to bounce from.

  43. It strikes me that his head was turned. After two goalless and rather sterile games, we go to Wigan, play 442 and score some goals. He likes to reward decent performances, so gave it another go. It's understandable It looked like a potential solution. Looking back, it looks all wrong for many reasons. This doesn't mean 442 will never work, but it was clearly wrong on the day, making us weak and them strong. I'm sure many lessons will have been learned and have no doubt that the next two games will see us going back to what got us to 8th last season.

  46. What we are missing is our team coming off the pitch with most of our players turning in a 7/10 performance. Putting in 5/10 performances doesn't get you promoted regardless of the formation.

  47. For me, it's simple. £250m is roughly equivalent to what the PL pay out in parachute payments each year. Rather than shell out another £250m just cancel the parachute payment and distribute that cash equally. The huge parachute payments which reward failure and cause a huge financial imbalance in the Championship should go. Until they do there will never be a fair League system. If clubs get relegated from the PL then they need to either work relegation clauses into their wage bills or suffer the consequences. The fair distribution of the parachute payments alone would create more goodwill bet

  48. I feel that the main problem is, that without Manny in the side we create little. That has been a long story from much of last season too. A strong, winning Vale side always has Conlon and Manny in it. Askey’s biggest failing which seems so obvious is that we don’t play at a high enough tempo. That doesn’t help the likes of Worrall to get up the pitch and stretch sides. The common issue with the last few league games is that none of those sides seem to have much pace in them and we fail to dictate a higher temp to open them up. We should be doing that at home.
