  1. Not sure why Fitzpatrick has been a bit of a scapegoat, even to the point that people want to see RCG in the side. Someone who’s done nothing for us and is totally unproven.

  2. No need to panic yet. We are 4 games in to what ( hopefully) will be a long season. I agree we do need to look at how we get to break down teams who sit back and allow us to have the ball- especially on small pitches with less space than at Vale Park. But there is a long way to go yet this season.

  3. If our attacking players were creating, nobody would care less about what Fitzpatrick does going forward just as long as he does his job defensively. I'm not his biggest fan but he's not the reason we've only scored 4 goals this season, or got one point from the last 6 available.

  4. Not sure is this is serious or a wind up? Some of the criticism of Fitzpatrick is a bit harsh, hes a lot better than players like Kennedy and Lloyd, he’s steady enough without necessarily adding much in the final third. I guess with Gibbo playing yesterday that it showed us in glimpses what a more forward thinking fullback could add to us.

  5. Yes...the Norman regime really paid off.. with near bottom of the league finishes...

  6. This is a bit harsh... the lad was always supposed to be a low cost backup to Monty in a world of new financial restrictions. He wouldn’t have played a min if Monty hadn’t been injured. We have conceded one goal in the league games he has played... a penalty that should have been awarded and had nothing to do with him. I suspect we will see Monty back next week.

  7. Everything is too comfortable at the Vale atm. Players on good contracts, good training facilities, full squad so no one else coming in to threaten their place, new training gear, not eating old pies for lunch any more, being looked after properly. It sounds great. I’m just not sure it brings about a huge hunger and desire to win football matches.

  9. If this was a one off, I'd be happy to view it as a blip. Someone above likened it to Macc, roughly 12 months ago. It is, and results last season, and this, clearly demonstrate that we have not found a way to play when we are the better team. Polar opposite to games against teams who come out and play, so we press high and stop them playing.

  10. We're all aware we will lose games here and there. But it was the manner in how we lost it. We weren't great against Exeter but got the result with some fortune. We were very ordinary against Harrowgate but I preferred to give them credit for being organised and working to a game plan. But there was little excuse for that shower yesterday. I expect is to be bang it it and put a few past Carlisle. If we struggle in that game too then we really have to start looking at how the team is set up, and the tactics, which the manager is responsible for both. For me we can't continue to play this 4

  11. The priority is to give players who are short of match fitness a competitive game, nice as it would be to progress. So, the likes of Crookes, Monty, Pope, Robinson, Amoo, Whitehead, etc, should all play. As I said a month ago you could easily make out a case for us fielding just as good a team from players who were not on the pitch on Saturday - especially in the final third.

  12. Couldn't care less about this one. The rage won't leave my system until hopefully we put a poor Carlisle side to the sword next Saturday.

  14. The only way to beat teams set up like Harrogate and Morecambe is to get the first goal and make them change their game plan. Flair players ( Amoo and Mckirdy ) yes both look to be injured or just recovering but those sorts of players are the key. Rodney excited me a couple of times but because he's raw mostly no end product. The two I mentioned are proven creators and notch a few times too. One of them has to start next week and if he's fit what better person to rile Carlisle than Mckirdy ?

  15. Decent strikers but I don’t see any of them scoring over 20 goals this season, despite us having one of the best squads in the division.

  16. Just my opinion. Worrall is the first person on my team sheet. Yeah, he hasn’t looked anything like his best recently but I’d back him to start showing it at some point soon. In fairness to Woz, I don’t think having either Mills or Fitz behind him has helped him in the slightest because they offer him no support going forward. I think having attacking full-back suits Worrall’s game.

  17. A second consecutive poor showing from the Vale is quite concerning, and our lack of Plan B is even more concerning. Askey has to find an alternative to his 4-3-3 when we are struggling against compact and resolute sides. This was our major downfall last season and I'd hoped John would have addressed this problem. Unfortunately, two poor showings in succession suggests not much has changed. The game itself was poor, they happily sat back and didn't allow any space for us to play football. Their midfield did a good job of not letting Joyce have a minutes peace on the ball, which res

  25. I thought it was high time I asked this again... This is your site/community. If you have a good idea either for the forum or for the frontpage do let me know. For instance, I am reviving the "Who are yer" feature (where forum users introduce themselves) after a suggestion to do so by @TylerB If you have any ideas or if you are a writer yourself and want to help out, please let me know. I'm also open to any suggestions on the forum (topics, features, anything really). So, do let me know if you think of something... it will be appreciated. Rob

  26. I never realised that clueless toff had any role in this -no wonder football is in a mess. He tried to make football a no contact sport when he was a ref and robbed Chesterfield of an fa cup final.

  27. Interesting call to use Worrall in that roll. He would certainly add energy and ball carrying to the midfield. Similarly, Manny if fit (is that his name now?) springs attacks quickly and directly. I wonder whether the roll would also keep him injury free, as it's a little less demanding. Pope needs game time, as does Theo, but Rodney looks a mouth watering prospect as a central striker. McKirdy/ Monty on the left. Wow. What an abundance of riches we have. Feeling better already. Great post 😃

  28. Given the result yesterday, I would use this game as an opportunity to try a few things they we could utilise in the league. There is no point playing Hurst or Dan TS, as we know they are going out on loan. Visser Gibbons Brisley Crookes Monty Worrall Manny (if fit) Whitehead Amoo Rodney/Pope McKirdy My thinking is let’s see if Worrall is a good option on the right of a 3 and if Rodney or Pope look better in the lone striker role than Cullen/Robinson. Also, I think Manny could be a good option as DM in games where opponents put 10 men behind the ball. If fit of cou

  29. Fitzpatrick was not the reason we lost yesterday’s game whilst he was far from our worst performer. Four players who need to ask whether they did their best yesterday are Worrell, Burgess, Conlon and Cullen. All teams will lose games the important thing now is can we put it right on Saturday. We’ll know by the end of this month where we are at as we have upcoming games v Salford, Cambridge and Cheltenham and hopefully, we will be more creative in these games than yesterday.

  30. Looking at it that way, it's even more worrying - not just two games in a row where we've failed to adapt to teams that throw a wet blanket over us, but two seasons running. It's early days and too soon to start getting too anxious but if JA doesn't find a solution soon we're going to have a repeat of last season as more and more sides follow suit. To me, he seems over-wedded to his favourite 433 and, fair enough, but you have to know when and how to change it depending on the opposition. You can bet Carlisle are going to come with a similar game plan to Harrogate and Morecambe, so we'll find

  31. The last 2 games have posed questions that the formation and the team did not answer. The league is a long campaign so no panic button pressed just yet but the manager needs to use this game to sort us out and get us back on track as genuine promotion candidates.

  33. This game should have a lot of significance because of yesterday’s performance and those who come in that want to stake their claim to a shirt for saturdays game against carlisle.

  34. As soon as teams put ten men behind the ball we're screwed. No guile in midfield. We need a playmaker.

  35. I disagree re strikers. We have got three experienced strikers who are proven goal scorers at this level and a very exciting prospect in Rodney. Most teams in this league would kill for that. We are simply not playing to their strengths, we are trying to fit players into a formation, not finding a formation to fit the players in my opinion.

  36. Wozza from last season I would agree but what is the point investing in a squad to provide competition for places if you keep playing players him when they are struggling for form. Its a sure fire way to demotivate the squad.

  37. Agree, we’ve not got enough goals from the strikers so we need a midfielder who can give us over 15 goals a season, currently, we don’t have that but Taylor could have done.

  38. The full back issue is key. Monty and Gibbo attack, Mills and Fitz are often described as 6/10 performers, that’s not good enough. Get width, pull defences apart and get at them.

  39. It was my worry at the start of the season......we have a squad good enough to gain automatic promotion bar the fact we haven’t got a striker who will get us over 20 goals in the league and it is looking like that is the case. I didn’t watch the match yesterday but it sounds very much like Pope should have come on and we should be getting crosses in for him, conditions will have been awful so we need to be more direct at times.

  43. It's taken me a couple of hours to come round after that dismal performance today. More than two thirds of the possession, more in the first half, and we manage two shots on goal. It must have been one of the worst performances I've seen since Askey arrived, not because we weren't organised, defensively poor or didn't play tidy football but because we offered no attacking threat whatsoever to a second-rate side who, in the first half at least, played like the away team with ten men behind the ball. Morecambe had clearly done their homework, emulating Harrogate from last week and we had n

  44. We're all armchair managers when we lose. We will have ups and downs. We were on a roll when we locked down. The manager made changes all last season and knew it was a marathon. I trust him. We might not like losing but we need to keep our heads. This is a much better start than we had for a number of seasons despite 2 lackluster performances.
