  1. Is it me or does Burslem Academicals turn up every pre-season, place every single player we're linked with into numerous Vale Fan In Alsager style formations and then dissappear again for a year when the season starts? 😃

  2. So we sign Sinclair to develop young talent then we go into meltdown when we dare get some young talent on trial [emoji2369]

  3. I thought Rodney fulfilled that criteria for this season, hence the 3 year contract. I'm all for getting young lads in who we can develop but I'm still of the view we need an EFL experienced forward. Cullen has had myriad injury issues for 3 years, Pope is missing the first 6, and Rodney, as Askey has openly stated, is a long-term player. If Cullen pulls up in pre-season, or at any point in the first 6, I wouldn't want the choice to be Rodney/Bradbury, but that's just me. I think the squad is ready to rumble if the forward is secured. Just hope it isn't silly season with the w

  4. In the last few years he's been at two clubs, Salford and Macclesfield. Askey loves mobile players that can get about and this guy can seriously run all day. He can also chip in with the odd goal here and there. He's an Askey sort of player down to a tee and at 26 is at a great age. His signing makes perfect sense.

  5. I have a feeling that Rodney is thought of as a bit more than that. Someone recently posted recently that the football dept really rate him and I reckon we will see more of him than we think. Who knows... it will be exciting to find out!

  6. Bollox He played 35 games in Maccs promotion season under SJA. And through my work I attended every Macc home game that season. He was superb. He is a class player with a " box to box engine". And having met him several times I can tell you he is a great bloke to have around. He will help to bring us the promotion we deserve.

  7. PV 1973 was just reporting on the clips seen.....fairly long clips but watching the movement and general play of Bradbury.....certainly not definitive obviously but a sense of the skill set and the strengths and weakness of a player....six three and good in the air/good with his head but also decent first touch and lay offs in short decent hold up play but also seemed to be a bit of a goal sniffer around the box being quick to respond and seems to have a finish but the thing that stood out for a big man fast and mobile....good allrounder with potential....now like Rodney has played a lot of me

  8. Didn't the development squad give us Andoh and Hugill? £1.9m which should have gone into the club's coffers. One player made the entire exercise worthwhile, whilst providing depth for the first team. With no scholars making the grade, and Brentford excelling with the use of a 'B Team' (similar to our development squad, young players picked up from elsewhere), I'd love to see it return. You'd need to get a proper good scout in like George Foster (Europe Scout at Swansea I believe now), and a proper coach like Jimmy Bell. Maybe one for Danny Pugh to cut his teeth with? Believe he's bee

  9. Good point signings used to be either 19 or 36 with very little between.....kinda lads and dads.

  10. Another feature of the two new signings is that they are both 26, which is possibly the peak age in any career. It was noticeable during the dark years that we didn't have anyone at this stage of their career. Pleased to note the change.

  11. Although prone to the odd costly error, Monty would currently be most peoples choice at LB, unless we added someone like Clarke. His occasional lack of good positional sense was highlighted last season, but as a converted winger this was to be expected. We can only anticipate this will be worked on so we could expect to see some improvement. On this subject I think the talk of teams "targeting" our LB or RB is over stated. Most teams have decent wide players, certainly wide right, and look to get the ball out to the wings, so the full back, especially LB, is often placed under scrutiny

  12. .....before we then concede an equaliser in the 96th minute! 🤣

  13. Good point about Cambell-Gordon but also fourth place centre back and second place left back Crookes but Monty has played his best games at left back and has really added an attacking threat to the side can tackle and head and has great recovery pace. Got to disagree that Manny Oyeleke is an unknown quantity playing central holding midfield because that was where the lad played and got player of the season and a move to the Vale and was originally at right back when young....can certainly see Oyeleke as midfield general in the centre of the park and the role might save the hamstrings.....

  14. All fair comments. The holding roll involves a lot of discipline, which Joyce demonstrates. He also good at finding a bit of space and making himself available to receive the ball. What we don't often see is Joyce picking the ball up and driving 40 yards upfield. It's not what he does. He'll lay the ball off to someone who can. Manny, for me at least, is the opposite. Not as disciplined as Joyce defensively but more able to power upfield and carry the ball a distance. Manny is also a far greater goal threat. Overall more suited to an more attack minded roll. Campbell-Gord

  16. Let's hope we don't sign an experienced forward or the meltdown moaners would have got their way!

  17. Who's had a meltdown mate? Literally just seen a few people say 'fine, he's a gamble, I would also like a more experienced forward'. Or just a bit of hyperbole?

  20. Harvey Bradbury 21 could be a good signing and will learn a lot from Pope before Pope hangs up the boots.....so that would mean Amoo on the right Cullen/Pope down the middle and Worral on the left and young players breaking through Browne/Bradbury/Rodney. Seen a few clips of Bradbury good with his head, good first touch and lay offs, good hold up play but also sharp around the box and can finish but also for a big man quick and can run in behind....also a hard worker.....sort of player who would fit an Askey team.....kinda a good allrounder. Comments above that we need an older experie

  21. We need a good striker in, somebody who’s done it in this league and knows where the net is.

  22. Maybe, with this in mind, we will get some on-pitch rotation, which might confuse the opposition?

  23. I think Manny has to be played as an attacking midfielder, free from much defensive responsibility and focusing most of his energies on driving us up the pitch with his athleticism in the transition, and then using his excellent vision and technical ability in the final third. He can glide past players and has an excellent through ball on him; was it Sunderland in the Cup he sliced open with a one touch pass? We were crying out for him last season when teams would arrive at VP and sit deep; needed that little big of magic, of beating a man sitting deep and then stroking it through to

  25. Now Askey is saying Whitehead is versatile and not just an attacking box to box midfielder but can also play the holding role.... So we now have Joyce/Oyeleke/Conlon/Whithead/Mills who can play holding central midfield so perhaps Askey has as ever got it covered.
    1 point
  26. Yes, I'd been thinking that too. Early last season, I remember being frustrated by Conlon as he seemed to be doing the same job as Joyce and we were too pedestrian. All changed at half time v Exeter though!!

  27. I’m talking about Vale fans seeing him play in that role in league 2 and I’d rather trust my own eyes than someone other fans view that he’s the answer to a problem that at the moment doesn’t exist. Joyce’s performances don’t warrant him suddenly being omitted IMO. If Manny is so good as a holding midfielder why didn’t Aspin or Askey start him there when he was fit? We play with just one holding midfielder and maybe Manny would be good in that role, I don’t know, but from what I saw of him I liked him when he was driving us forward with his powerful runs. Possibly shackling him to

  31. Hope so! Hopefully be will be another Burgess. I think Cullen would be good enough to lead the line for us if we can keep him fit. Pope is also a great option to have on the bench. If we bring in another forward of decent quality then we will be in a very good place.

  33. With regards to substitutes are we allowed to make 5 now ? Or was that rule just amended after the restart ?

  34. Playing a high tempo, pressing game requires substitutions. I would expect the midfielders to be sharing the load. All seem capable, so, hopefully the quality and tempo will remain for 95 minutes.

  35. Re Manny, I understand he has become vegan. As a result of which he has lost his "bulk". I suspect this to prevent injuries. When I saw him he looks less stiff and more mobile so hopefully this cures his injury problems. If its does, it makes team selection very interesting as in my opinion he was a excellant cog in the askey machine when he played.

  36. Off topic a little, but what happened to Ernie ? Used to self implode with any player who had a Macc connection. Haven't seen him in ages.

  37. Absolutely not! My posts on the whole have been positive, just stating reservations about Whitehead. You can’t shoot someone down for having an opinion about a player can you? As I’ve already said on this thread I would be very happy to be proven wrong and wish the lad all the best for the season. We the fans all want the same things, promotion. If we don’t achieve that next season then I still won’t be too disappointed as we have a good manager, great coaching staff and fantastic owners who have a vision for PVFC.

  38. Unless Askey is dumber than I think he hasn't signed Whitehead to compete for a space on the bench with Burgess with Oyeleke as a starter on right midfield. He'll stick with the formation. I think there is a reasonable chance he'll give Oyeleke the central role.

  39. I’m going. To say something that people may not agree with... I’m not too bothered if Taylor doesn’t re-sign. He didn’t play much at the back end and that’s when our form kicked on and we started to really gain some momentum. Burgess has an INCREDIBLE record of not losing whilst playing and... and this is the reason I’m not too bothered if Taylor doesn’t sign... Burgess is ours. Another good 6 months for Taylor and he would be off to earn big money somewhere. Yes Taylor scores goals, but we didn’t necessarily miss them when he was injured... the System provides the goals

  40. How nice is it to be having this type of debate! Choices, option, combinations... got to love it!
    1 point
  41. Spot on. Let's Judge the lad on what he does on the pitch. It says a lot to me that West Ham and Wigan have both signed him out of non league. They must have seen something in him. Ok he didn't cut it at that level, but he has proven twice he is better than non league level. Askey knows what he can do, and Macc plainly love him as the keep going back in for him. That is probably largely because of what Askey got out of him in their promotion year. Personally I trust a manager who has turned us from relegation fodder to promotion material in 12 months.
    1 point
  42. as Macc fans always said... Askey doesn’t need money, he needs time. Some clear long term plays with 2 and 3 year contracts to build his squad.

  43. As sure as night follows day it’s preseason transfer time. That time of year when people claim to be experts on players who played against us when dare I say they wouldn’t really have been paying that much attention to that particular player through a 90 minute match. Then we get the wind up artist coming in who has echoes of previous posters on here... hmm. Then we have those judging them on Wikipedia. Which unless you’re a top end player is invariably negative anyway. So is Whitehead going to be any good? I have no idea. On the face of it he’s probably an upgrade to our previous

  44. Improving year on year, from a very, very low base. The quality of the squad is higher than last season, loads higher than the season before and way better than the last season in league one. It's what we expect from this leadership team and it's what we're getting. I'm perfectly contented.

  45. Ex loan player Reiss Greenidge has just signed for Bolton. Another odd one! You probably won't remember him being here as he never actually played a game!
