Wage structure – Darrell Clarke explains why Port Vale didn’t try to sign Dennis Politic permanently
Port Vale manager Darrell Clarke said that Dennis Politic had an “outstanding” spell on loan but he did not want to break the club’s wage structure in order to sign him on a permanent basis.
Politic was recalled by parent club Bolton Wanderers earlier this month and is set for a move to Serie B. Many Vale fans were disappointed to see the player leave, but Clarke revealed that the player’s pay demands would have broken the club’s wage structure and that was why he didn’t make a bid for the player.
We were in for him but, like I have always said, there is a wage structure at this club that I don’t want to break…
Clarke told the media: “Dennis was outstanding. We were in for him but, like I have always said, there is a wage structure at this club that I don’t want to break.
“I have great support at the club and there isn’t going to be a gulf between players’ wages. I don’t want that, I don’t think it is the right way to build it.
“We are not moneybags, we try to do things at a sensible level and get competitive.
“I know people say, ‘we need to sign him,’ but when they want the sort of wages that they want then it knocks everything out of sync for me.
“We want players that have high incentives on wages, that they earn it. As I have said before, they don’t get a bonus unless we are in the top seven.
“We want players coming in and being rewarded for success, that is the platform we are building here.”
