EPL: Things We Learned after the International Break
A preview of what to expect in the Premier League following the recent International break.
The Premier League is back! After the international break, Manchester United’s losing streak continued, Newcastle finally ended an eight-game losing streak to open their new era with a loss, while Chelsea extended theirs to seven, and England’s European hopefuls saw wins for Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester, Man City, and Tottenham.
With Manchester City smashing teams on the break and Liverpool showing their Champions League credentials with some outstanding attacking performances, there is a sense that Chelsea needs more creativity to really make their mark.
The most talked about player in the break, however, was Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar arrived in Manchester amidst much fanfare and lofty expectations for his debut campaign at Old Trafford. Some questioned whether the forward would earn his £46 million fee but he has undoubtedly proven value for money since joining United after ten years at Real Madrid where he amassed a record of 451 goals in 438 appearances.

Here are a number of things that we learned from the EPL after it returned from the international break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Liverpool going under the radar
After 8 games they have 22 points and sit 3rd in the Premier League. Their biggest asset is definitely Mo Salah, who has 15 goals already this season. Salah seems able to score incredible goals almost every time he touches the ball. He’s scored dozens of them in his little over 12 months with Liverpool. The Egyptian has picked up where he left off in terms of showcase solo strikes in Europe, scoring against Red Star Belgrade, Maribor mid-week, and then Watford on Saturday evening.
Mohamed Firmino scored a hat trick against Brighton so he seems to have finally started scoring consistently, which will be a great asset for Liverpool’s title bid. If Sadio Mane can remain healthy and Roberto Firmino can stay consistent Liverpool should be contenders for the title this year.
International break being good to Arsenal
Unity and purpose have been restored after a tricky start to the season, which was confirmed by a cohesive performance from Arsenal at Carrow Road stadium led by Mikel Arteta. Having been written off before the season started, the Gunners have rallied under their captain and began to look more like the team of old. The best way to banish fears is to keep picking up points.
The undaunted Brentford
Brentford have been the best promoted team so far this season. They have scored more goals than anyone else, conceded fewer than anyone else and look a credit to the Championship. They have been desperately unlucky to lose so many players from last season’s heroics – most notably Jota – but they have found a team good enough to dominate, win games and score pretty goals. They will not go quietly. Brentford will always go for it. Long may they do so.
Change of fate for Michail Antonio
The 27-year-old’s rich vein of form had been a major fillip to his team’s chances of enhancing their credentials for making it to the top four, but he will now have to sit out for the next three matches. The decision has come as a tremendous blow to Antonio too, who was just a week ago being heralded as one of the best players in the division.
Moyes has it in him
Moyes is a stickler for organization and discipline, and he will instil that into his new side. He has taken over a well-drilled group of players at West Ham, and he will make few major changes. Opting to promote from within, Moyes will likely bring in another couple of his own players as well as one or two more proven Premier League performers. He remains an excellent coach who knows exactly what he wants from his players.
Mendy saves Chelsea
In one shocking moment, all of Chelsea’s defensive flaws were exposed. As Norgaard flew in for a spectacular overhead kick, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that he would put the ball in the goal. But out of nowhere, out of thin air it seemed, Mendy came barrelling in and dove headfirst to push the ball onto the bar. It was a truly stunning reaction save.
Dennis is a menace
Watford have discovered their Troy Deeney, who left for Cardiff this week, in Emmanuel Dennis. Bigger, stronger, faster and just as good in the air it would be no surprise to see the Hornets through to the play-offs. With £4.5m striker Deeney sold to Cardiff, complete with his heart and soul, Watford have replaced him with more energetic younger players.
