Vale were missing captain Tom Conlon who also missed the Sunderland cup game in midweek while keeper Lucas Covolan returned to make his home League debut. Visitors Tranmere included former Vale players Sam Foley and veteran Peter Clarke.
The Valiants made a bright start with Devante Rodney’s snap shot hitting the bar on fifteen minutes. James Wilson also had a chance before Vale were grateful for the impressive Dan Jones who blocked a Tranmere effort. There were further Vale chances for Wilson and Leon Legge but it finished goalless at the break.
The home continued to be dangerous in the second period with David Worrall rattling the post on 57 minutes. The Valiants made a double change on the hour mark but Tranmere should have taken advantage of a Covolan error as he headed the ball straight to an opponent but the chip went wide. It heralded a period of pressure by the visitors who remained a threat to the Vale defence throughout.
The Valiants countered with a header by sub Proctor which was well saved and a further effort by Pett which went wide. Meanwhile, Foley missed a great chance for Tranmere and Knight-Percival had a late effort which went just wide. Then Vale had a late effort with Rodney’s effort drawing a save.
However, neither side could find the decisive goal as it petered out to a draw leaving the Valiants still seeking their first win of the new season.

Need a goalscorer badly, Goodwillie at Clyde always gets goals. Would cost nothing and is clinical.
