Darrell Clarke: tough decisions but the right time to make wholesale changes
Manager Darrell Clarke has told the Port Vale media team about his reasoning behind the 2021 retained list.
Clarke released fifteen players including Scott Brown, Luke Joyce and Tom Pope while he has also transfer listed three others.
Clarke commented: “Some of them were very tough decisions. It’s never easy for a manager at the end of the season when you do your retained list and when you are unemploying people. Some of those boys have given me everything and done really well for me.
“(It is) a time to move on and put a line under it. I wish them all the very best. It’s never easy releasing a club legend like Tom Pope (but) my gut instinct tells me it was the right time to make wholesale changes.”

The Best news to come out if our club in 5 years personally… A whitewash of the team was very much needed and now we have Darrell Clarke with David Flitcroft it’s the perfect time to have a Fresh new team and hopefully an exciting team to watch on the pitch. No sentimental values towards certain players and they judged them on how they have played this season and as we all could guess that a few would be pushed out the door.. To long we have sat in the shadows at Port Vale FC and personally we should be looking for QUALITY not Quantity when it comes to bringing in a new squad of players. Thank you very much for the whitewash as I knew from the beginning of the season we weren’t good enough ! Roll on the good times with a management team that has a plan and direction
