Send in your memories of – Liverpool 2-2 Port Vale, 1991
OVF is revamping its coverage of classic Port Vale games and we want to add the views from supporters who were there during famous Port Vale matches.
We’ve all seen plenty of videos, press reports and images but many of those reports miss what it was like to be in the crowd that day? OVF wants to add to its coverage of the games and explain to younger supporters what it was like to be there on the day.
So, if you were a supporter present when Port Vale held Liverpool at Anfield in 1990 read on…
We want to get an idea of the atmosphere, the excitement of that day. As an example, here’s Rob Fielding’s memories of the that game:
I was in the side stand, which was almost an overflow from the packed Vale end, so I had a bird’s eye view of the huge Port Vale support in that away end. The noise was fantastic, especially during the dramatic end, I couldn’t hear any of the home crowd over it. I remember the drive back from the ground and stopping at a packed motorway services full of celebrating Port Vale fans. A truly memorable night.

I was fortunate enough to be at the game, excellent performance against very good Liverpool team, my abiding memory of the game was Martin Foyle scoring in front of the packed away end and the sheer amount of noise that the Vale fans generated that night…. one to savour!

What a night! Unbelievable atmosphere from the 9000 Valeites. Fond memories of the goals and wild celebrations but also Robin Van der Laan flattening Jan Molby when he tried to put his foot on the ball, with a great timed tackle.
I`m pretty sure a good few would have passed out had that deflected shot from Ryan Kidd curled the right side of the post in the last minute with Grobelaar looking on helpless. Time seemed to stand still but we could not will it into the net.

Lived and worked in Liverpool at the time. Vale had sold their ticket allocation for the game and I didn’t have one. So I paid to go in the kop. Had a great view as it wasn’t well attended by the Liverpool fans but I was careful enough to mouth a “yes” under my breath when the Vale goals went in.

Drove to the game with a few friends, great game and atmosphere and wonderful that we scored twice at the mighty Anfield.
We lost our way back to the car, stopped at a pub in Huyton and were greeted by Liverpool fans who bought us a pint for our team’s efforts.
Got home at 1am
