Teams: Port Vale v Newport County
Competition: League Two
Venue: Vale Park stadium
Kick-off: Tuesday 16th March, 7pm
Form guide:
There’s an unwelcome record on the horizon for the Valiants. No goals in this game will see the side equal the 1998 club record of five home games without a goal.
Away from the game… if you’re looking to enjoy yourself online before the match why not visit Aussie casino but always remember to only gamble what you can afford to lose.
Port Vale team news:
Defender Adam Crookes is the latest to join the lengthy Port Vale injury list. His absence creates a problem as fellow left-sided defenders David Fitzpatrick and Cristian Montano have suffered injuries. In his latest press conference, Darrell Clarke hinted Fitzpatrick could be fit to return but if not there are not that many options. Zak Mills could switch flanks and Nathan Smith fil in at right-back. Or there could possibly be a move to a back three with Alex Hurst coming in as left wingback. There’s a similar problem upfront where lively loanee Will Swan was injured so Vale will have to select a front two from Devante Rodney, Theo Robinson, Mark Cullen or Kurtis Guthrie.
Possible Starting XI:
Brown – Mills, Legge, Smith, Fitzpatrick – Worrall, Joyce, Conlon, Hurst – Rodney, Robinson
One to watch:
It’s tough to single Tom Conlon out as he’s been one of the few bright spots of this season. But with Vale desperate to reverse their poor form, they really need their captain to inspire the team.
Opposition manager:
40 year-old Mike Flynn has been in charge of Newport since 2017. He’s managed 222 games with a 41 win ratio.
Opposition team:
There’s some familiar faces in the Newport line-up including veterans Kevin Ellison, Padraig Amond plus January addition Nicky Maynard. Nick Townsend is the regular keeper and there’s also former Plymouth striker Ryan Taylor upfront.
Connections:
He won’t be involved so there will be no opportunity for Harry McKirdy to try and impress against a side where he spent a spell on loan in 2019. It’s a similar story for Newport defender Kyle Howkins who is on loan at Solihull Moors.
Other players who featured for both sides in recent years include:
- Midfielder Sam Foley
- Defender Ryan Inniss (pictured)
- Striker Mark Harris
- Forward Sean Rigg
Further back, striker Neville Chamberlain started his football career at Vale Park making 141 appearances over five years from 1977 to 1982. He later had a spell at Newport from 1984 to 1985 making 41 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

Last time we met:
There was late heartache back in November when nemesis Kevin Ellison netted a late winner in a 1-0 Newport win. Vale haven’t won against Newport since they returned to the Football League. In fact, there have only been two Vale scorers – Tom Pope (pictured) and Anton Forrester.
The stats:
Overall record: o Port Vale wins | 3 Port Vale losses | 3 draws[/themify_box]

Loving the use of the retro photos on OneValeFan
The preview of the Newport Game has a banner above it showing some disconsolate away fans with the scoreboard screaming ‘G O A L’ clearly after a Vale goal
Not sure what I’m most nostalgic about. Seeing fans in The Hamil End or remembering when we used to score a goal at Vale Park

County played in the first match at Vale Park in 1950
The first match was a 1–0 victory over Newport County on 24 August 1950 in front of 30,196 rain-soaked spectators. Walter Aveyard took the honour of being the first to score at the ground. On the same day the stadium’s name was revealed for the first time – Vale Park
