“Next day or two” – Port Vale set to sign new goalkeeper
Port Vale manager John Askey has indicated to the Sentinel newspaper that trialist Dino Visser will be signed up for the forthcoming season.
Port Vale were left with just one senior goalkeeper in the summer following the departure of deputy Jonny Maddison. Askey said that the club would try out several trialists in summer friendly games and it appears that experienced South African Visser has done enough to earn a permanent contract.
Askey told the newspaper: “We are hoping that Dino is going to sign in the next day or two, so that is pretty much sorted.”
The Vale manager indicated that he felt Visser was more ready for the role than last season’s deputy Maddison adding:
“He has come in and been consistent. Browny has done well for Vale and hopefully can continue to do so, but we need someone who can put a little bit more pressure on him. Or, if Browny does get injured, then somebody who we are not worried about putting in. I think last year we would probably have got a loan in if anything had happened to Browny. But at this stage we would see how Dino went for a few games.”
One problem Vale faced was that Brown’s form meant that any deputy could potentially spent a long spell on sidelines as in the last two seasons, Brown has payed 96 times, but Askey has given Visser hope commenting: “All the players want to play, and Dino does as well. He will probably have to bide his time and then it is up to him.”
Visser has had a long spell in the South African Leagues before moving to the UK and joining Exeter City in 2019. He aso had a spell at nearby Crewe last season. He has made two senior appearances in the UK, both for Exeter.
