Manchester City and Liverpool have been the top two Premier League sides in the last few years. However, looking further back we have put together some of the top starts in Premier League history.
Liverpool were the early leaders in the 2019 season’s Premier League title race. They had an excellent start to this campaign as they won five successive times and established a five-point lead at the peak.
Right now, Jurgen Klopp’s players are close to improving two records. The first one, for the most successive wins in the Premier League, and second, for the best start in the history of the championship. Both of these records can be tied in the match which will be played against Manchester United on “Old Trafford”. With all of these games played, what are the very best starts to a season the Premier League has seen? We have taken a look and put together some of the top starts in Premier League history.
Newcastle United – 1994/95 season
The Newcastle team made an exceptionally good start of the 1994/95 season. It seems like a long time now that Newcastle United with genuine title contenders in the Premier League days but they look to be just that at the start the 1994-95 season. They won seven and draw one of the first eight games.
The Magpies’ series ended with a loss to Manchester United at the end of October.
In the end, Newcastle recorded a series of poor results around and after the new year. They not only lost the battle for the trophy but finished in a disappointing sixth place.
Arsenal – 2004/05 season
Arsenal’s season started as it ended – with incredible football and many victories. They started the campaign strongly, recording with 7 wins and 1 draw. The Gunners made a great winning all over of their opening eight football fixtures.
Their incredible unbeaten run finally came to an end two games later at Old Trafford and also ended that season second to Chelsea.
Chelsea – 2005/06 season
The Chelsea team from the 2005/06 season currently holds the record for most successive victories at the beginning of the Championship which are 9. The Blues are the only teams that have won all eight of their opening fixtures in the Premier League era.
Chelsea went on to win the league with Frank Lampard’s top scorer. The midfielder bagging 16 Premier League goals.
Chelsea – 2012/13 season
This series of Chelsea started a few months after the incredible success in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Everyone at the club was hoping for a new strong season and winning the Premier League trophy.
Chelsea has been a real strength in the second half of the premier era following the arrival of Roman Abramovich at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have won five Premier League titles since 2004 and there are often quick starters. One of their finest starts came in 2012-13 season under Roberto Di Matteo. He guided the Blues to seven wins and one draw from their first eight games with a positive goal difference of 13 which is incredible. Chelsea then went to seven games without a win. Over this period Roberto Di Matteo was sacked and the team was taken over by Rafa Benitez.
In the end, the Blues finished on to third that season but they won the Europa League.
Manchester City – 2011/12 season
Pep Guardiola may have got Manchester City firing all cylinders at the start of this season but it’s not the first time the systems have started like a house on fire. They made a particularly good start in 2011-12 under Roberto Mancini with seven wins and scoring 27 goals in the process. Therefore was excellent for virtually the entire campaign.
Then Manchester United made many mistakes, which led to drama in the last round. And there Sergio Aguero brought the first trophy for Manchester City, and the players of Manchester United suffered extreme disappointment.
Chelsea – 2014/15 season
No one seems to do great starts quite like Chelsea. The team made a tremendous start to the 2014-15 season when they were led by Jose Mourinho. Chelsea won seven of their opening eight games drawing away at Manchester City in a run which included a 6-3 away win over Everton and a win against Arsenal. The Blues were simply the best team during this campaign.
Manchester City was close to winning the trophy but after the next 15 games and victory over Palace yielded 11 wins and gave the Blues significant 16-point lead.
This became the last magic season for “special one” who left Stamford Bridge and joined Manchester United.
Manchester City 2017/18
The Manchester City team has learned their lesson and Guardiola’s start made by them this season is the second finest to the Premier League era and the best in terms of both goal scored and dole difference. Manchester City has started this season with seven wins of one draw from that first day with only Everton winning any points against them. In their first matches, there was no team to stop the “citizens”.
It seemed like one of those seasons where everything is clear. And around Christmas, everyone even started thinking that this could be the second undefeated team in history. But that’s not what Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool thought, who caused a heavy loss on City in January, something that didn’t stop Guardiola from winning the trophy.
