Is Age Just a Number or So Much More?
I recently took a quiz and it got me thinking. Is age just a number or is it much more. After taking the “guess her age quiz” I am not so sure anymore. In this article, I will be looking at some different factors to what actually “ages” us and what doesn’t.
Language
This is a big one. The words we use say more about our culture, background, and beliefs than almost anything else. For example, more Millenials will find themselves using slang and curse words than older generations. This has a lot to do with current cultural norms.
Back in the 50’s schools could enforce dress code and strict language policies as well. Even books were more censored then.
Slang also usually is a tell when it comes to which generation that person grew up in. Magiquiz has a quiz called guess her age quiz, and there is more than one question that tests you on your slang.
Names are also a part of this category. Most people who meet an Edith are convinced she is a grandma and Madison or Avery her beloved granddaughter.
Clothing
They say clothes make the man, but do they also tell us how old a person is. Fashion trends have changed so drastically over the past few decades and some are coming back in.
If I say bell-bottoms, platform shoes, and tie-dye most people will think 60’s. What about Doc Marten’s, plaid, body jewelry, and spiked or colored hair? If you guessed 90’s you know your fashion trends.
Activities
What may be a blast for your parents (Bingo or Bridge) may be a boring outing for you. Meanwhile, your grandparents can’t understand why anyone would play a game where you walk down the street holding your phone and trying to catch things you can’t see. What we do says a lot about our age.
Research shows that older people that engage in younger activities such as art, play, and dance, have stronger memories and are happier.
Careers
This is probably the biggest clue to guessing someone’s age. Most people who have a corporate position they have held for over a decade tend to be in the baby boomer group while the younger generations tend to seek something they can switch up yearly that doesn’t require a cubicle.
Also, the degrees of interest have changed dramatically. Older generations focused on what they needed for a career while today students are drawn more to current issues, social constructs, and subjects that will help them expand and travel.
Taking an age quiz is such an eye-opener. Not only did it guess my age as 12 years younger, it really opened my eyes to the fact that there are many activities and topics I am not pursuing just because of my age. It really is a number and unlike the speed limit, you don’t have to abide by it.
Take Away
If you love to swim who cares that you are over 70, the same goes for a Millennial who has always wanted to learn crochet. It is so vital for us to learn about each other and taking guess her age quiz is a great way to do that.
