Transfer-listed Port Vale forward Ben Whitfield on trial at Cheltenham Town
The media in Cheltenham is reporting that Ben Whitfield is set to play a game for Cheltenham Town as a trialist.
The Robins are playing Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday night, and plan to field five trialists including the Vale player.
Whitfield is under contract at Vale Park having agreed a deal with former manager Neil Aspin but was transfer-listed by new manager John Askey in the summer.
Whitfield, along with fellow transfer-listed squad member Connell Rawlinson were told they could still force their way into contention and both have been involved in Port Vale summer friendly games.
However, the trial at Cheltenham could result in a permanent move for the wide forward who has been inconsistent in his Vale career so far.
Ben Whitfield Factfile
Age: 23
Position: Winger / Forward
Joined: 4th August 2017 on loan from AFC Bournemouth, signed a two-year deal on the 30th August 2018
Vale record: 72 appearances and eight goals
Profile: The youngster originally joined the Valiants on loan from Premier League Bournemouth and started to impress when Neil Aspin replaced Michael Brown as manager. His finest performance was arguably during a thrashing of promotion candidates Luton Town. In January 2018 Vale tried to sign the player permanently for around £35,000 but the deal was never completed. However, he did rejoin on loan for an inconsistent second spell at the club. Having shown glimpses of real potential, Whitfield was signed on a two year deal in August 2018 but last season he once again struggled for consistency and was transfer-listed by new manager John Askey as a result.
