Can England build on World Cup performance with UEFA Nations League win?

After reaching the semi-final in last year’s World Cup, it was important for England to build on that performance. They’ve certainly been able to do just that, and June sees them attempting to win the first-ever UEFA Nations League.

England take on the Netherlands in the semi-final on June 6. The two teams will already know by then who awaits them in the final as hosts Portugal face Switzerland the day before. The final takes place on June 9 in Porto with the two semi-final losers meeting in the third/fourth place play-off game on June 8.

All Eyes on Madrid

Saturday night isn’t going to be an easy one for England boss Gareth Southgate. He has several members of his squad playing in the Champions League final in Madrid. Southgate will be praying his players arrive safe and sound in Portugal. Just why UEFA have scheduled the UEFA Nations League finals to take place a week after two major club finals is anyone’s guess.

Confident Squad

England failed to win either of their first two games in this tournament. Then came the 3-2 win in Spain and a come-from-behind victory over Croatia to finish top of the group. England have become an increasingly confident squad of players with a strong start to their Euro 2020 campaign. blacktype betting have plenty of odds and markets available on upcoming games and have England at 7/5 to beat the Netherlands in 90 minutes.

Kane is Back

Harry Kane has recovered from injury and is likely to start against the Dutch. The Raheem Sterling critics have been well and truly silenced in recent games. His goal-drought is well and truly over now and he’s a valuable member of a squad that Unibet will give you 2/1 on winning the UEFA Nations League.

Tough Opponents

The Netherland will be a tough nut to crack in the semi-finals. They had to get past France and Germany to qualify for this semi-final. Even with van Dijk, they have only kept three clean sheets in their last ten games, so England’s swift attack may prosper against them. Unibet have the Dutch at 2/1 to beat England in 90 minutes.

Hosts Portugal are available at 13/20 with Unibet to beat Switzerland in the semi-final. They beat the Swiss side in a World Cup qualifier last year and have Cristiano Ronaldo back in their team. It’s 7/4 at Unibet that they go on to win the tournament.
Switzerland had to beat Belgium 5-2 in their final group game to get this far. They lack consistency though and recently led Denmark 3-0 with six minutes remaining and drew 3-3. England beat them in a friendly last year, so they may well struggle here. They are 9/2 at Unibet to beat Portugal in 90 minutes.

Conclusion

England won’t find It easy in Portugal, but they have a squad that is more than capable of winning the UEFA Nations League. They have grown in confidence and are strong in all areas of the pitch, the Nations League trophy really could be coming home.
